우리는 보통 강해지기를 원합니다. 부족함이 없고, 흔들리지 않으며, 누구에게도 약한 모습을 보이지 않는 삶을 꿈꿉니다. 그래서 연약함은 감추어야 할 것으로 여기고, 실패나 한계는 가능한 한 빨리 벗어나야 할 문제로 생각합니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀에서 하나님은 우리가 기대하는 방식과는 전혀 다른 말씀을 하십니다. 하나님은 바울의 약함을 당장 없애 주시는 대신, 그 약함 한가운데서 은혜를 말씀하십니다. “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다.” 이 말씀은 단순한 위로가 아니라, 하나님의 은혜가 우리의 결핍보다 크고 깊다는 선언입니다.

사도 바울은 자신의 몸과 삶을 괴롭히는 “가시”를 제거해 달라고 세 번이나 간구했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그 문제를 즉시 해결해 주시지 않았습니다. 대신 바울에게, 약함이 끝난 뒤에야 하나님을 만나는 것이 아니라 바로 그 약함 속에서 하나님의 능력이 온전하게 드러난다고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 보통 문제가 해결되어야 은혜를 느낄 수 있다고 생각합니다. 상황이 바뀌어야 안심할 수 있고, 형편이 나아져야 감사할 수 있다고 여깁니다. 그러나 하나님은 지금 이 자리, 아직 해결되지 않은 현실 속에서도 은혜가 충분하다고 말씀하십니다.

이것이 믿음의 신비입니다. 우리의 약함은 끝이 아니라 하나님이 일하시는 자리입니다. 내가 잘할 수 있을 때는 내 힘이 드러나지만, 내가 더 이상 내 힘으로 버틸 수 없을 때는 비로소 하나님의 능력이 보이기 시작합니다. 그래서 바울은 “내가 약할 그 때에 강함이라”라고 고백합니다. 이것은 고통 자체를 좋아한다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 약함과 부족함과 어려움 속에서도 하나님이 자신을 붙들고 계신다는 사실을 알게 되었기 때문에 가능한 고백입니다. 바울은 자신의 능력이 아니라 하나님의 은혜로 사는 사람이 되었습니다.

우리도 마찬가지입니다. 삶에는 쉽게 사라지지 않는 문제들이 있습니다. 반복되는 염려, 관계의 무게, 사역의 부담, 몸과 마음의 지침, 그리고 내 뜻대로 되지 않는 현실이 있습니다. 우리는 그런 것들 앞에서 자꾸만 낙심합니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀은 우리에게 묻습니다. “너는 네 약함 때문에 무너지고 있느냐, 아니면 그 자리에서 하나님의 은혜를 다시 배우고 있느냐?” 하나님은 우리의 약함을 부끄러움으로만 보지 않으십니다. 오히려 그 자리를 통해 하나님 자신을 더 깊이 알게 하십니다. 그러므로 오늘 우리는 완벽해지려고 애쓰기보다, 하나님의 은혜가 정말 내게 충분한지 다시 붙들어야 합니다.

오늘 하루도 모든 것이 강하고 완전해서 살아가는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님의 은혜가 우리를 붙들기 때문에 살아갑니다. 내 능력으로 감당하는 하루가 아니라, 주님의 능력이 내 약함 위에 머무는 하루가 되기를 소망합니다. 약해서 끝난 것이 아니라, 약하기 때문에 더 깊이 하나님을 의지하게 되는 은혜의 하루가 되기를 바랍니다.

묵상

약할때, 힘겨울때 하나님의 능력이 더 크게 발휘되는 순간입니다.

1. 오늘 서킷 미팅이 있어요. 저희 서킷에 엡워스 연합감리교회 목사님이 다른 디스트릭을 담당하는 감리사님으로 파송이 되셨어요. 엡워스 교회 사역을 하면서 두가지 사역을 하는거죠. 오늘 모여서 자세히 이야기를 들을텐데, 변화가 때로는 걱정과 염려를 느끼게 하잖아요 이를 위해 기도해주세요. 이런 염려와 걱정을 넘어서야 변화는 일어나는 거니까요.

2. 열린교회를 위해서 기도해주세요. 새로운 사역에 주저하지 않고 용기를 낼수 있도록, 앞으로 계획되는 사역에 하나님의 뜻을 구할 수 있도록

We usually want to be strong. We long for a life without lack, a life that is steady and unshaken, a life where we never have to show weakness to anyone. So we tend to hide our frailty, and we treat failure and limitation as problems that must be removed as quickly as possible. But in today’s passage, God speaks in a way completely different from what we expect. Instead of removing Paul’s weakness immediately, God speaks grace right in the middle of it. “My grace is sufficient for you.” This is not merely comfort; it is a declaration that God’s grace is greater and deeper than our lack.

The Apostle Paul pleaded three times for the “thorn” in his life to be taken away. Yet God did not resolve the issue right away. Instead, He revealed to Paul that we do not meet God only after our weakness is gone, but that His power is made perfect precisely within that weakness. We often think we can only feel grace once our problems are solved. We believe we can have peace only when circumstances change, and we can be thankful only when things improve. But God says that even here, in this unresolved reality, His grace is already sufficient.

This is the mystery of faith. Our weakness is not the end; it is the very place where God works. When we are capable, our own strength is visible. But when we can no longer rely on ourselves, God’s power begins to appear. That is why Paul confesses, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” This does not mean he delights in pain itself. Rather, it is a confession born from knowing that God holds him even in weakness, limitation, and hardship. Paul became a person who lived not by his own strength, but by the grace of God.

The same is true for us. Life brings problems that do not easily disappear—repeated anxieties, the weight of relationships, the burden of ministry, physical and emotional exhaustion, and realities that do not go as we desire. We often grow discouraged in the face of these things. But today’s Word asks us: “Are you collapsing because of your weakness, or are you learning God’s grace in that very place?” God does not see our weakness merely as something to be ashamed of. Rather, through it, He invites us to know Him more deeply. So today, instead of striving to be perfect, we must hold on again to the truth that His grace is truly sufficient for us.

We do not live today because everything is strong and perfect. We live because God’s grace sustains us. May this not be a day carried by our own strength, but a day where the Lord’s power rests upon our weakness. Our weakness is not the end; it is the beginning of deeper dependence on God’s grace.

Reflection

When we are weak and weary, that is when God’s power is most powerfully revealed.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Today, we have a circuit meeting. In our circuit, the pastor of Epworth United Methodist Church has been appointed as a District Superintendent for another district, while continuing ministry at Epworth. As we gather today to hear more about this transition, we recognize that change often brings concern and uncertainty. Please pray that we may move beyond worry and fear, trusting that true transformation happens when we entrust these concerns to God.

2. Please also pray for Yeolin Church. Pray that we would not hesitate in stepping into new ministries, but move forward with courage. Pray that in all the ministries we are planning, we would seek and discern God’s will above all else.
