"긍휼이 풍성하신 하나님이 우리를 사랑하신 그 큰 사랑을 인하여" (엡 2:4, 새번역)

오늘 본문은 "너희가 허물과 죄로 죽었더니"로 시작합니다. 좀 무거운 시작입니다. 죽었다는 말입니다. 숨이 멎은 것이 아니라, 방향이 잘못된 채로 살아가고 있었다는 것입니다. 세상의 풍조를 따르고, 공중 권세 잡은 자를 따르고, 육체의 욕심대로 살았다는 것입니다. 읽으면서 이게 먼 옛날 이야기가 아니라는 생각이 들었습니다. 방향을 잃고 살아가는 것, 무엇이 중요한지 모른 채 바쁘게 움직이는 것, 이것이 죽음의 다른 이름일 수 있겠다 싶었습니다.

바울이 여기서 솔직하게 고백합니다. "우리도 다 그 가운데서 살았으며." 나도 그랬다는 것입니다. 에베소 교인들만 그런 것이 아니라, 나도 그 안에 있었다는 것입니다. 바울이 이 말을 할 수 있는 것은 자기 과거를 알기 때문입니다. 교회를 핍박하던 사람이었습니다. 스데반이 돌에 맞아 죽을 때 그 자리에 있었던 사람입니다. 그런데 지금 이 편지를 쓰고 있습니다. 바울의 고백에는 무게가 있습니다.

그리고 4절에서 반전이 옵니다. "그러나." 성경에서 이 "그러나"가 참 중요합니다. 앞의 모든 이야기를 뒤집는 한 단어입니다. "긍휼이 풍성하신 하나님이 우리를 사랑하신 그 큰 사랑을 인하여." 우리가 무언가를 잘해서가 아닙니다. 방향을 바로잡아서가 아닙니다. 하나님이 먼저 사랑하셨기 때문입니다. 긍휼이 풍성하신 분이기 때문입니다.

허물로 죽었던 우리를 그리스도와 함께 살리셨다고 합니다. 함께 일으키시고, 함께 하늘에 앉히셨다고 합니다. 지금 이 자리에서 여전히 허물 많은 채로 살아가고 있는데, 하나님의 시선에서는 이미 일으켜진 사람이라는 것입니다. 이미 앉혀진 사람이라는 것입니다. 이것이 은혜의 논리입니다. 내가 완성되어야 시작되는 것이 아니라, 이미 시작되었기 때문에 살아갈 수 있다는 것입니다.

마지막에 바울이 이 모든 것의 목적을 말합니다. "이는 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 자비하심으로써 그 은혜의 지극히 풍성함을 오는 여러 세대에 나타내려 하심이라." 우리가 이 은혜를 경험하는 것이 우리만을 위한 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 우리 다음에 오는 세대가 볼 수 있도록, 우리의 삶이 그 증거가 된다는 것입니다.

오늘 아침 이 말이 마음에 남습니다. 내가 살아가는 모습이 누군가에게 은혜의 증거가 된다는 것. 거창한 사역이 아니어도 됩니다. 허물 많은 채로, 그러나 하나님의 긍휼 안에서 살아가는 것. 그것이 다음 세대에게 보여주는 가장 정직한 신앙의 모습일 수 있습니다.

묵상

은혜는 내가 완성된 다음에 시작되는 것이 아닙니다. 이미 시작되었기 때문에, 우리가 살아갈 수 있습니다.

"But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy." (Ephesians 2:4)

Today's passage opens with this: You were dead in your transgressions and sins. A heavy way to begin. Dead. Not that breathing had stopped — but that life was moving in the wrong direction entirely. Following the ways of the world, following the ruler of the kingdom of the air, living according to the cravings of the flesh. Reading it, I couldn't help feeling this wasn't a distant, ancient story. Living without direction, moving busily without knowing what actually matters — that might be another name for death.

Paul makes an honest confession right here. All of us also lived among them at one time. Not just the Ephesians — me too, he says. I was in that too. Paul can say this because he knows his own past. He was someone who persecuted the church. He was there when Stephen was stoned to death. And now he is writing this letter. When Paul confesses, it carries weight.

And then verse four brings the turn. But. That word matters so much in Scripture. One word that reverses everything that came before it. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy. Not because we did something right. Not because we finally got our direction straight. Because God loved first. Because he is the kind of God who is rich in mercy.

We who were dead in our failings, he made alive together with Christ. Raised us up together, seated us together in the heavenly places. Right now, still living with all our failings and shortcomings — and yet in God's eyes, we are already raised. Already seated. This is the logic of grace. It doesn't begin when we are finally finished and complete. It has already begun — and because it has already begun, we can live.

At the end, Paul says what all of this is for. In order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. The grace we experience is not only for us. Our lives become the evidence — so that the generations coming after us can see it too.

That is what stays with me this morning. The way I live my life can be evidence of grace for someone else. It doesn't require grand ministry. Just living with all our failings, but within the mercy of God. That may be the most honest picture of faith we can show to the next generation.

Reflection

Grace does not begin once we are finished. It has already begun — and that is why we can keep living.
