"We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God." (Acts 14:22b)
Paul is stoned in Lystra. Left for dead outside the city walls. And then he gets up. The next day he leaves for Derbe and preaches the gospel there. And after that — he turns around and goes back to Lystra. The place where they had just tried to kill him. He couldn't leave the disciples there without going back. He went anyway.
This is the man who then says to those disciples: We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God. That is not a comfortable thing to say. How do you willingly walk into something knowing it will hurt? And yet Paul says it from the other side of a stoning. This is not theory. It is testimony.
Not long ago, my wife and I were talking, and I realized that I am now the age my mother and mother-in-law were when we got married. Time moves fast. And sitting with that, I found myself wondering — could I do for my children what our parents did for us at that age? Looking back, they were still carrying so much, and we were largely oblivious. You don't really understand until years have passed and something shifts inside you.
Can you truly understand Paul without going through what Paul went through? Maybe not entirely. But something came to me as I sat with it. What Paul carried was not just suffering — it was a passion so deep it rerouted his entire life. A man who once persecuted the church became the one who built it. And the conviction underneath all of it was simple and unshakeable: proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles was exactly what God had called him to. That clarity was what made everything else possible.
Thinking about it that way, Paul felt a little closer. Coming to a foreign land, living the hard life of immigrants, sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with people who are doing the same — building a church in the middle of all of it. That one thing alone puts us somewhere in the same neighborhood as Paul. Maybe not the same street, but the same direction.
Time passes. And the fruit of it — not payment exactly, but something to be genuinely grateful for — will come. Having a community to share that gratitude with is already a blessing. Having someone to share life with along the way is also a gift. And having a church community where all of that is built together — that is an even greater one. When I think of the people I get to do this with, something rises in my chest.
Reflection
Paul seemed more afraid of hesitating over the gospel than of death itself. That is what a man who has already faced death carries in him.
