"이분이 누구이기에, 바람과 바다까지도 그에게 복종하는가?" (마 8:27, 새번역)

아이들이 떠나기전에 스파이더맨이라는 영화를 보자고 해서, 어제 함께 시간을 보냈습니다. 오랜만에 찾은 극장에 사람들이 평일인데도 꽉 찬걸 보니 영화가 재미있겠구나 생각을 했는데, 2시간이 넘는 런닝타임인데 지루하지 않게 본것 같습니다.

대부분 디테일한 대사를 이해하지는 못했지만, 웃고 울때 그 감정선에는 함께할 수 있었습니다. 문득 든 생각은 잘 만들어진것은 언어와 문화를 넘어설 수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 우리안에는 이런 한계들로 가득차 있습니다. 나름 합리적인 분석과 냉정한 해석 그리고 경험적인 나눔들이 쌓여서 제한과 경계를 만들어놓는 것 같습니다.

영화의 마지막 장면에 기억을 잃은 친구가 스파이더맨과 나눈 오랜 손짓과 이름을 기억해내며 영화가 끝날때 극장에 있는 모든 사람들이 소리를 지르고 박수를 쳤습니다. 이 장면은 단연 영화가 주는 재미의 끝판왕처럼 관객 모두를 열광하게 만들었습니다. 인종도 다르고, 언어도 다르고, 문화도 다른데 모두가 일치된 감정으로 반응한것입니다.

우리는 이민자입니다. 익숙한 고국을 떠나 새로운 나라에 이민자로 살아갑니다. 아이들도 키우고, 스스로도 적응하고 만만치 않은 삶을 살아가고 있습니다. 아이들의 정서는 미국이라는 문화에 적응해서 자라고, 캘리포니아라는 특별한 공간에서 그것도 베이지역이라는 자리에서 자라서 각자의 삶으로 나아갑니다. 영화를 보는 내내, 완전히 다른 어린시절과 십대를 보낸 아이들을 이해하기 위해 내가 할 수 있는게 무엇이 있을까? 생각하다가 재미있고, 감동적이고, 의미있는 것에는 함께 반응할 수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다.

오늘 본문은 지난 주일에 나눈 말씀입니다. 예수님이 제자들을 대하는 것, 그리고 물위를 걷는 장면 이 모든 것들이 단순히 기적으로만 기억되지 않고, 특히 베드로의 믿음의 적은 자의 행위는 우리를 전혀 다른 시간과 공간에 있으면서도 깊이 예수님의 말씀에 빠져들게 합니다. 다른 환경, 다른 문화, 다른 공간과 시간을 살아가도 예수님이 오늘 우리에게 던지시는 질문과 가르침은 특별한것 같습니다.

"주님! 살려주십시오!" 이 베드로의 고백은 모든 것을 가능하고 용서하게 했습니다. 시험과 어려움은 때로는 우리들에게 주어지는 가장된 축복일 수 있다는 것, 하지만, 모두가 똑같은 것을 경험하지 않지만, 이런 틈바구니를 비집고 나와 마침내 삶을 살아내는 것은 비슷하다는 것.

주님은 늘, 우리와 동행하신다는 것~! 이것을 잘 기억하면 될것 같습니다.

묵상

차이는 분리를 만드는 것이 아니라 화합과 연대를 꿈꾸게 하는 것입니다.

1. 이번 주 토요일에 여선교회 선교학교가 있습니다. 교회에 요즘 행사가 많은데 은헤롭고 지속적으로 행복한 모임이 될 수 있도록 기도해주세요.

2. 열린교회의 사역과 비전을 위해서 기도해주세요. 한국에서 오실 목사님에 대한 비자준비가 시작되었습니다. 이런저런 서류를 넣었고, 연회도 준비한 서류를 넣으면서 진행중입니다.

"What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" (Matthew 8:27)

Before the kids head back, they wanted to go see Spider-Man together. So yesterday we went to the theater. Weekday afternoon — and the place was packed. That alone suggested something good was waiting. It ran over two hours, and honestly, not a dull moment.

I didn't catch most of the detailed dialogue, but I found myself laughing when everyone laughed, and feeling the emotional weight of scenes when the whole room went quiet. And it occurred to me sitting there: something made well enough crosses language and culture. We carry so many internal boundaries — reasonable analyses, careful interpretations, the accumulated limits of experience — all building fences around what we expect we can share with someone different from us. And then a well-made film just walks right through them.

Near the end, a character who had lost his memory slowly recalled — through an old gesture, a familiar name — who Spider-Man was. The entire theater erupted. People shouted. People clapped. Different races, different languages, different cultures — all of them having exactly the same reaction at exactly the same moment. Something in the story reached past all the differences and landed in the same place inside everyone.

We are immigrants. We left the familiarity of home and came to build a life somewhere new. Raising kids, adapting ourselves, carrying the weight of a life that doesn't make things easy. Our children have grown up shaped by American culture, by California specifically, by the Bay Area — and they are now moving into their own lives from that particular soil. Watching the movie, I kept thinking: their childhood and teenage years are so different from mine — what can I actually offer them, what can we actually share? And then the answer came through the film itself. When something is genuinely funny, genuinely moving, genuinely meaningful — we respond to it together. That is enough of a bridge.

Today's passage is the one we shared last Sunday. Jesus and the disciples on the water, Peter stepping out, the storm, the fear, the rescue. What strikes me each time is how these moments — from a completely different world, a different time, a different language — still reach across and pull us in. Like a well-made film. The questions Jesus asks, the things he teaches: they land on us across every gap.

Lord, save me! Peter's cry in that moment made everything possible. Trial and difficulty can sometimes be the disguised shape of blessing. Not everyone faces the same storm. But the movement of pressing through, and finally living — that part is recognizable in all of us.

The Lord is always walking with us. If we hold onto that, it's enough.

Reflection

Difference doesn't have to mean separation. It can be the very thing that makes unity and solidarity worth dreaming about.

2. Please pray for the ministries and vision of Yeolin Church. Visa preparations for the pastor coming from Korea have begun. Documents have been submitted from our end, and the Annual Conference is also preparing their portion. Please keep this process in prayer.
