"그러나 하나님께서 그와 함께 하셔서, 모든 환난에서 그를 건져내시고, 그에게 은총과 지혜를 주셨습니다." (행 7:9b-10a, 새번역)

어제 저희 교회에 오실 엄자영 목사님의 종교비자가 승인되었다는 연락을 받았습니다. 이제 한국에 미국대사관에서 인터뷰를 하면 곧 오실 수 있을 것 같습니다. 문제는 인터뷰일정이 언제로 잡히느냐에 달려있고, 비이민비자인터뷰라 진행중일것 같은데 어떻게 스케쥴이 잡힐지 잘 모르겠습니다.

엄자영 목사님은 제가 신학생때 가르치던 교회학교 학생이었습니다. 제가 군대를 다녀오고 잠깐 외부 사역을 다녀온뒤에 고등학생이 되서 다시, 교회에서 가르쳤고 신학교에 가겠노라고 조언을 구해서 이야기를 나눈 기억이 있습니다.

그렇게 오랜 시간을 지내면 엄자영 목사님은 제가 처음 개척한 교회에 여름성경학교를 도와주러왔었고, 이후 이스라엘, 미국 한국에서 다양한 사역을 위해 노력했습니다. 아마 개인적으로 인도에 대한 소망을 품고 있고, 한국에 베다니감리교회(예전 구로중앙감리교회)에서 10년 사역과 수련목회자 과정을 거쳐 목사안수를 받고는 현재 영등포에 신풍감리교회 부목사로 사역하고 있습니다.

교회학교, 행정, 교구, 다방면의 사역경험이 있고, 열린교회 교육부를 위해 그리고 전체적인 사역의 구조변경을 위해 잘 맞겠다는 판단을 목회협조위원회와 논의끝에 저희 교회로 파송받도록 감리사님과 연회에 요청을 했습니다.

열린교회로서는 유학생 신분의 신학생들을 파트타임 사역자로 줄곧 사역을 이어오다 신학교에 학생들이 더이상 들어오지 않게되면서 용기있게 새로운 시도를 하고 있는 것입니다. 여기에 한가지 더 의미를 두자면 열린교회가 변화 앞에 주저앉지 않고 새롭게 새로운 사역을 꿈꾸고 용기를 내고 있다는 것에 큰 의미가 있다고 봅니다.

오늘 아침에 읽는 사도행전에서 스데반의 설교를 나눕니다. 요셉에 대한 이야기로 진행되는 스데반의 설교는 하나님의 손길이 구체적으로 보이지 않던 요셉의 삶에 하나님이 늘 함께하셨다고 이야기합니다. 마치 유대종교 지도자들이 요세의 형들처럼 예수를 거부하고, 요셉을 팔아넘긴것 처럼 예수를 십자가에 못박았다고 합니다. 그런데 그 순간에도 하나님은 일하신다고 합니다.

요즘 저에게 가장 많이 들리는 말은 "너무 일을 많이 해서 어떻게 하냐!"라는 말입니다. 제가 하고 싶은 일 하는 그런일도 아니고, 교회의 일, 사역인데 혼자 동분서주 하다보니 듣는 말입니다. 오늘 스데반의 설교가 저에게 위로가 되는 것은 "내가 이 일을 많이 해서 힘들겠다"는 이야기 속에서 "여전히 하나님이 함께일하고 계시다"는 것에 마음에 위로가 됩니다.

아마 한국에서 목회자를 모시고 온다는 이야기가 낯설고 이게 될까? 싶은 마음으로 걱정하는 분들도 있었을 것이고, 언제 오려나 그 시간을 가늠하지 못하는 것에 불안한 분들도 계셨을지 모릅니다. 그런데, 한가지 이 과정에서도 하나님은 여전히 함께 일하고 계셨습니다.

오늘, 이제 더위가 가시고 시원해진 아침! 어느 순간에도 여러분의 삶에서 하나님이 함께하셨다는 것을 기억하시고, 오늘도 주님과 든든히 동행하시기를 기도드립니다.

"But God was with him and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt." (Acts 7:9b-10a)

Yesterday we received word that Pastor Jayoung Eom's religious visa has been approved. The next step is an interview at the US Embassy in Korea, and once that is scheduled and completed, she will be on her way. The timing of that interview is still uncertain — non-immigrant visa scheduling can be unpredictable — but the major hurdle has been cleared.

Pastor Eom was a student in the children's ministry class I taught when I was in seminary. After I returned from military service and a brief period of outside ministry, she had become a high school student — and I taught her again. She came to me for advice when she was considering seminary, and I remember that conversation. Over the years that followed, she came to help with Vacation Bible School at the first church I planted. She has since served in Israel, the United States, and Korea. She carries a personal calling toward India that she has held for a long time. After ten years of ministry at Bethany Methodist Church in Seoul, she completed her supervised ministry requirements and was ordained. She is currently serving as associate pastor at Shinpung Methodist Church in Yeongdeungpo.

Her experience spans children's ministry, administration, district ministry, and more. After conversations with the Staff-Parish Relations Committee, we determined she would be a strong fit for Yeolin Church — for the education ministry and for the broader restructuring of how we do things. We brought the request to the district superintendent and the Annual Conference, and they agreed to send her.

For Yeolin Church, this is a significant step. We had been relying on part-time seminary students as ministry workers for years — and as enrollment at the seminaries declined, that pipeline dried up. This is a new direction, taken with some courage. And beyond the practicalities, there is something meaningful in the fact that Yeolin Church is not standing still in the face of change. We are dreaming of something new and stepping toward it.

The passage we read this morning is from Stephen's sermon in Acts — the portion about Joseph. Stephen is making a point to the Sanhedrin: God was present through all of it. Through the pit, through slavery, through the false accusations and the prison. Even when God seemed invisible, he was there. And the people who sold Joseph away — Stephen draws the parallel directly — did the same thing to Jesus that the brothers did to Joseph. And still, God worked.

Lately the thing I hear most often is some version of: you're doing too much, how are you managing? It's ministry work, not work I chose for personal reasons — but moving through it largely alone draws that comment. What brings me comfort in Stephen's sermon this morning is not the acknowledgment that this is a lot. It is the reminder that even in the middle of all of it, God is still at work. That is the reassurance.

There may be people who found the idea of bringing a pastor from Korea hard to imagine — wondering if it would really happen, unsure how long the waiting would go on. But through every step of this process, God has been working. The approval that came yesterday is part of that.

The mornings are cooler now. Summer is easing. In whatever season you are in, remember — God has been with you through it. He is with you today.

God is always, still, actively at work — for Yeolin Church, for each of you, for this country, for the mission fields we pray for, and for this world.
