아주 이른 새벽에, 예수께서 일어나서 외딴 곳으로 나가셔서, 거기에서 기도하고 계셨다.(막 1:35)

마가복음 1장은 매우 분주한 장면으로 가득합니다. 예수님께서는 회당에서 가르치시고, 귀신을 쫓아내시며, 병든 자들을 고치셨습니다. 그 소문은 곧 온 동네로 퍼졌고, 많은 사람들이 예수님께 나아왔습니다. 사역은 성공적으로 보였고, 사람들의 기대는 점점 더 커져갔습니다. 그러나 그 다음 날 새벽, 아직 어두울 때에 예수님은 홀로 일어나 한적한 곳으로 가셔서 기도하셨습니다. 가장 바쁘고 가장 많은 요청이 몰려오던 바로 그 시점에, 예수님은 사람들 앞이 아니라 하나님 앞에 먼저 서셨습니다.

사역이 적어서 기도하신 것이 아니라, 사역이 많았기 때문에 더욱 기도하셨습니다. 제자들이 와서 “모든 사람이 주를 찾나이다”라고 말했을 때, 그것은 인간적으로 보면 머물러야 할 이유처럼 들립니다. 성공의 자리, 영향력이 커지는 자리, 사람들이 원하는 자리입니다. 그러나 예수님은 기도를 통해 사명의 방향을 다시 확인하셨습니다. 그리고 “우리가 다른 가까운 마을들로 가자… 내가 이를 위하여 왔노라”라고 말씀하시며 새로운 길로 나아가셨습니다. 기도는 멈춤이 아니라 방향을 바로 세우는 시간이며, 사명을 분별하는 자리입니다.

한적한 곳은 단순히 조용한 공간이 아닙니다. 그곳은 하나님과의 관계가 새로워지는 자리이며, 사람들의 기대와 소리에서 벗어나 하나님의 음성을 다시 듣는 자리입니다. 우리는 종종 필요와 요청, 일정과 책임에 이끌려 하루를 시작합니다. 그러나 예수님의 모습은 우리에게 먼저 하나님을 향해 방향을 정하라고 말씀하십니다. 새벽에 하나님 앞에 선 사람만이 낮에 흔들리지 않습니다. 기도로 시작된 하루는 사람의 요구가 아니라 하나님의 뜻을 따라 움직이게 됩니다.

오늘도 주님께서 우리를 한적한 자리로 부르십니다. 분주함보다 먼저 하나님을 선택하고, 성공보다 먼저 순종을 선택하며, 사람들의 기대보다 하나님의 뜻을 구하는 하루가 되기를 소망합니다. 기도로 방향을 정하고, 그 방향을 따라 담대히 걸어가는 하루가 되기를 바랍니다.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He was praying.” (Mark 1:35)

Mark chapter 1 is filled with intense and busy scenes. Jesus was teaching in the synagogue, driving out demons, and healing the sick. The news about Him spread quickly throughout the whole town, and many people came to Him. The ministry appeared successful, and the expectations of the people continued to grow. Yet the next morning, while it was still dark, Jesus rose alone and went to a solitary place to pray. At the very moment when He was busiest and the demands on Him were increasing, Jesus chose to stand first not before people, but before God.

He did not pray because there was little ministry to do, but because there was so much. When the disciples came and said, “Everyone is looking for You,” it sounded, from a human perspective, like a reason to stay. It was the place of success, the place of growing influence, the place people wanted Him to remain. But through prayer, Jesus reaffirmed the direction of His mission. He said, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” Prayer was not a pause from His mission; it was the place where His mission was clarified and aligned.

The solitary place is not merely a quiet location. It is the place where our relationship with God is renewed, where we step away from the expectations and voices of people and listen again for the voice of God. We often begin our day driven by needs, requests, schedules, and responsibilities. Yet the example of Jesus calls us to set our direction toward God first. Only the one who stands before God at dawn will not be shaken at noon. A day that begins with prayer moves not according to human demands, but according to the will of God.

Today, the Lord calls us again to a solitary place. May we choose God before busyness, obedience before success, and God’s will before people’s expectations. May we set our direction through prayer and walk boldly along that path.

Remember that the Christian life is training—training to stand alone before God, just as Jesus prayed alone. Please pray that our community would grow not merely in activity, but in deep and personal communion with the Lord.
