예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “그들이 물러갈 필요 없다. 너희가 그들에게 먹을 것을 주어라.”(마14:16)

예수님께서는 세례 요한의 죽음을 들으시고 배를 타고 빈 들로 물러가셨습니다. 슬픔과 침묵의 시간이 필요하셨을 것입니다. 무리도 예수님을 따라왔고, 예수님은 그들을 보시고 불쌍히 여기셨습니다. 자신의 아픔보다 먼저 타인의 고통을 품으시는 주님의 마음이 이 장면에 담겨 있습니다. 예수님의 사역은 능력 이전에 긍휼에서 시작되었습니다.

저녁이 되었을 때 제자들은 현실적인 판단을 합니다. 무리를 보내어 각자 먹을 것을 해결하게 하자는 제안이었습니다. 가진 것은 보리떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리뿐이니 당연한 생각입니다. 충분히 합리적이고 책임 있는 판단처럼 보입니다. 그러나 예수님의 시선은 결핍이 아니라 가능성에 머물러 있었습니다.

예수님은 말씀하십니다. “너희가 먹을 것을 주라.” 이 말씀은 단순한 명령이 아니라 제자들을 향한 신뢰의 선언입니다. 예수님은 없는 것을 요구하지 않으셨습니다. 다만 그들이 가진 것을 가져오게 하셨습니다. 작은 것이라도 주님의 손에 올려질 때 그것은 사명이 되고, 기적의 씨앗이 됩니다.

예수님께서는 하늘을 우러러 축사하시고 떡을 떼어 제자들에게 주셨고, 제자들은 그것을 무리에게 나누어 주었습니다. 기적은 예수님의 손에서 시작되었지만, 그 기적은 제자들의 순종을 통해 흘러갔습니다. 그리고 결국 모두가 배불리 먹고도 열두 바구니가 남았습니다. 주님의 손에 맡겨진 것은 결코 부족으로 끝나지 않습니다. 오히려 넘침으로 증명됩니다.

오늘 아침 우리는 무엇이 부족하다고 말하고 있습니까? 시간, 재정, 건강, 능력, 환경을 이유로 물러서고 있지는 않습니까? 주님은 여전히 말씀하십니다. “가져오라.” “맡겨라.” “너희가 하라.” 순종은 계산을 멈추고 믿음을 시작하는 자리입니다. 그리고 그 자리에서 하나님의 풍성함이 열립니다.

묵상

나는 지금 부족함을 이유로 멈춰 서 있습니까? 아니면 내 작은 것을 예수님의 손에 올려드릴려고 노력합니까?

“Jesus replied, ‘They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.’” (Matthew 14:16)

When Jesus heard about the death of John the Baptist, He withdrew by boat to a solitary place. He needed time for grief and silence. Yet the crowds followed Him, and when Jesus saw them, He had compassion on them. In this scene, we see the heart of the Lord—He embraces the suffering of others before tending to His own pain. Jesus’ ministry begins not with power, but with compassion.

As evening approached, the disciples made a practical suggestion. They urged Jesus to send the crowds away so they could buy food for themselves. After all, they had only five loaves of bread and two fish. It was a reasonable and responsible conclusion. From a human perspective, it made perfect sense. But Jesus’ focus was not on scarcity; it was on possibility.

Jesus said, “You give them something to eat.” This was not merely a command; it was a declaration of trust in His disciples. Jesus did not ask for what they did not have. He simply told them to bring what they already possessed. Even something small, when placed in the Lord’s hands, becomes a calling and the seed of a miracle.

Looking up to heaven, Jesus gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. The miracle began in Jesus’ hands, but it flowed through the obedience of the disciples. In the end, everyone ate and was satisfied—and twelve baskets were left over. What is entrusted to the Lord never ends in lack; it is proven in abundance.

This morning, what are we saying we lack? Are we stepping back because of time, finances, health, ability, or circumstances? The Lord still says, “Bring it to Me.” “Entrust it to Me.” “You give.” Obedience is the place where calculation stops and faith begins. And in that place, God’s abundance is revealed.

Meditation

Am I standing still because of what I lack, or am I striving to place my small offering into the hands of Jesus?

Intercessory Prayer

1. Today I will be traveling to the Sacramento Conference Office for the Pitch Event. Please pray that the fund review and presentation will go well and that God’s favor and wisdom will be upon the process.

2. Please also pray for those who are in the midst of illness. Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, and we will gather for worship at 7:00 p.m. May it be a sacred and grace-filled time of repentance and renewal.
