“So that we may not cause offense.” (Matthew 17:27a)

Today’s passage holds two scenes side by side. First, Jesus announces his coming suffering for the second time. Then, almost immediately, comes a question about the temple tax. On the surface they seem unrelated — but they belong to the same movement.

Verses 22 and 23: the Son of Man will be handed over, killed, and raised on the third day. The disciples don’t understand it, but they feel the weight of it. They are deeply grieved.

And right after that, the temple tax collectors approach Peter. Does your teacher pay the temple tax? Peter says yes. Then he walks into the house — and before he can say anything, Jesus brings it up himself.

Jesus asks Peter a question. Who do kings collect taxes from — their own children, or others? Others, says Peter. Then the children are exempt, Jesus replies. As the Son of God, Jesus has no obligation to pay a tax for the house of his Father. The logic is clear: the temple belongs to him.

And yet — verse 27 — he pays it anyway. Not because he has to. Because we do not want to cause offense. His own rights matter less than keeping others from stumbling. That is the posture of service: not insisting on what is technically correct, but prioritizing the other person’s footing over your own position.

And then the method he chooses is quietly remarkable. Go cast a line, he tells Peter. The first fish you pull up — open its mouth. You will find a coin there, exactly enough for both of us. The provision is already in place before the need is even fully stated. What Peter has to do is go fishing. What is waiting inside the fish is not his to arrange.

This is the part that lands differently when you sit with it. We spend so much energy trying to calculate outcomes in advance, build systems that guarantee results, make sure everything is in order before we begin. But most of the time, faith works the other way — you cast the line, and then you see what comes up. That is when gratitude is actually possible. You can’t be grateful for something you engineered yourself.

Word came that Giseo was discharged from military service. He plans to return in December for the spring semester. Time passes, and life keeps arriving — we look up and say already? and yet there it is. We didn’t plan for this particular moment. We didn’t calculate it. It simply came, and we receive it.

Reflection

Putting the other person’s footing before your own rights. And trusting that what’s needed is already prepared. This is the life Jesus is showing us today.

Intercessory Prayer

  1. Please pray for Wednesday Bible study and the young adult gathering — that today’s time in the Word would be a place of deep encounter.

  2. Please pray for the outdoor worship service this week. It’s a first, and the weather is supposed to be cold — please pray that everyone bundles up and that it becomes a joyful memory together.
