“Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods!” (Daniel 3:25)

Today’s passage contains one of the most dramatic scenes in the book of Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar demands that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego bow to the golden statue. They refuse — completely and without wavering. The king’s fury is immediate. He orders the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual, and has the three men thrown in.

Everyone watching would have expected them to be consumed in an instant. Instead, the king leaps to his feet in astonishment. He can see four figures in the fire — not three. They are walking around, unbound, unharmed. And the fourth, he says, looks like a son of the gods.

What comes out of Nebuchadnezzar’s mouth afterward is its own kind of confession: They were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. That is the summary of who these three men were. They had placed everything in God’s hands. They had already said, before being thrown in, that their God was able to save them — but even if he chose not to, they would not bow. The outcome was not the condition. The direction was already set.

The miracle that followed came in the most desperate moment. And I find myself thinking about all the things that hold us — the pressures and difficulties that are simply part of living a life that is anything but easy. Coming to worship and praise in the middle of all of that, week after week, is not so different from what these three did. We are not thrown into the same furnace they were. But we carry our own version of it. And yet we keep showing up before God.

The specific forms of suffering may have changed, but something similar runs through every generation. My prayer is that the people of this congregation — who are giving their best in the middle of genuinely hard lives — would know the joy and assurance of God’s salvation, unchanged and steady.

Pastor Jayoung Eom’s move went well yesterday. Seeing what the congregation had prepared for her — the household items and the care behind them — I was deeply moved. Thank you for that love. Please continue to pray for her as she settles in and begins her ministry here.

Reflection

The bonds were broken in the fire. The hardest place can become the freest place. And in that place, there is someone walking alongside.

Intercessory Prayer

  1. Please pray for each ministry team and ministry worker in the church — and especially for Kevin and the children as they prepare for the outdoor worship service.

  2. Please pray for the ministries and congregation of Yeolin Church. May this week’s gatherings for worship and fellowship be filled with grace.
