Philippians 3:13–4:1, Tuesday, October 13,

“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13b-14)
The internet at home wasn’t cooperating this morning, so I rushed to the church to send the devotional from here. I wanted to be at my desk earlier than this.
Morning devotional writing is how my day starts. Then a walk with the dog, breakfast, and the commute to church. When that routine gets disrupted, the whole day feels slightly off — so I try to protect it. At last week’s Korean Annual Conference, I noticed several pastors from the East Coast going out for early morning jogs. It planted a thought: maybe jogging belongs in the routine. Many of the pastors I spoke with talked about adjusting what they eat and how they move so their clothes still fit — something I couldn’t quite relate to before, but I found myself nodding along. Health matters, and that’s just the truth.
I remember Pastor Joseph Kwon once mentioning that he works to stay in shape for the same reason, and at the time it didn’t land with me. Now it does. Bodies and time have a way of eventually making the point.
Today’s passage from Paul landed right in the middle of where I’ve been sitting. Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. There is a particular gravity to the past — habits we’d decided on, things we said we’d do, things we actually said out loud to other people. Other people’s eyes. Our own expectations of ourselves. The past pulls, in more ways than one.
The 50th anniversary of the Korean Annual Conference was genuinely a celebration of what has been — but honestly, what I feel more strongly is anticipation for the next fifty years. The busyness of this season isn’t going to ease. My own life might find some rest somewhere, but the church, the community — it needs to be built into its future with at least as much energy, and probably more. The work continues.
The Oakland building sale is almost finished. Everything on our end is done; what remains is the Annual Conference’s portion of the paperwork. If everything goes as expected, today should close it out. Since July, the district superintendent, attorney Steve, and I have been working to bring this to the finish line. I am genuinely grateful to both of them. Their effort on our behalf was significant, and I want us to remember that: the church doesn’t stand because of our work alone. There are people interceding, praying, and showing up for us in ways we don’t always see. That matters.
Don’t let the past hold you. Step forward into something larger. That is my prayer for Yeolin Church.
Reflection
What lies behind has to be set down before you can run toward what’s ahead. Leave the pride and the regret both — and take one more step toward the Lord.
Intercessory Prayer
After a full and busy week, as we settle back into the rhythm of ordinary days — please pray for Yeolin Church’s ministries and congregation.
Pastor Jayoung Eom will be arriving soon. Please pray for her and for the ministry she is stepping into. May this new beginning open with grace.
