John 6:25–35, Wednesday, October 14,

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)
Last week the Women’s Missionary Society held a fundraising bazaar over lunch — homemade food, people paying for their meals with glad hearts, all of it going toward relief for the flooding in Nepal. Standing in the middle of it, I found myself asking: how grateful am I for this? The fact that we can gather with joy and carry genuine concern for people far away — that alone is something.
Tuesday was a full day. Running from one thing to the next, I noticed something small in the kitchen sink — a mouse, huddled in the corner of the basin. I dealt with it, cleaned up, and then noticed droppings scattered around. I couldn’t just leave it. I wiped everything down, filled a large pot with water, and put it on the gas burner to boil for sanitation.
And then I left for home and completely forgot about it.
Some time later, it came back to me. I rushed back, called Deaconess Anna on the way — and walked in to find smoke and melted kitchen supplies. Deacon Jaehoon had already opened all the doors to ventilate. The tension went out of my chest when I realized there was no fire — and then something heavier settled in. I had nearly caused serious damage to the church.
I barely slept. Lying there in the dark, I turned it over and over — where things had gone wrong, what needed to change. My wife, walking alongside me, made a joke about almost resigning on my behalf, and it didn’t land the way jokes usually do. She also said not to worry people, to keep it quiet. But I feel I need to share this honestly — because carelessness born from being too busy is still carelessness, and responsibility, process, and clear procedures need to be built in more carefully from here.
Today’s passage picks up the morning after the feeding of the five thousand. The crowd has followed Jesus across the water. His response is pointed: You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. They came back because the bread was good. Not because of what it meant — because it filled their stomachs.
This is uncomfortable because it describes us too. When prayers are answered, God feels near. When things go well, gratitude comes easily. But when the bread isn’t there, when no sign appears, when what we hoped for doesn’t come — what happens then? That is the question underneath Jesus’s words.
Verse 27 offers a redirect: Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life. Two kinds of food. One satisfies for a moment; one sustains forever. The crowd asks what they need to do to do God’s work. And Jesus gives an answer that cuts against every instinct toward achievement: The work of God is this — to believe in the one he has sent.
Not to do. To believe.
We measure so much by what gets done — how the service went, whether new visitors felt welcomed, what systems are in place for follow-up. These things matter. But when they become the center, something has shifted. The center is belief. How am I trusting the Lord? How is that trust shaping the way I actually live?
What happened last Sunday at the bazaar — people gathering, sharing food, giving what they had toward helping people in Nepal they will never meet — that is what believing looks like when it takes shape in daily life. We gather to worship and share life together precisely for this: so that faith becomes something lived, not just held.
Reflection
Are we searching for the bread — or for the one who became bread for us?
Intercessory Prayer
Wednesday Bible study and the young adult gathering are both today. Please pray that each meeting would be filled with God’s grace and love.
Please pray for the Dinner Church project and its English-language ministry. For October and November, we are planning to meet in smaller groups for more focused formation. Please pray that this season builds something solid.
