Colossians 2:16–23, Thursday, October 1,

"These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ." (Colossians 2:17)
The Wednesday young adult gathering continues to move forward, carried by your prayers and support. Last night was Samgyupsal Night — friends were invited, the evening stretched long over food and conversation, and we closed with a short message and small group time.
Jin Lee brought friends who don't speak Korean. As we talked, it came out that they attend a campus ministry started by Elder Jeon Eunheon's nephew — a ministry that launched last year and now gathers over a hundred people for worship. Seeing that kind of fruit from wholehearted effort is genuinely moving.
Several of the young adults have expressed a desire for Trinity Chapel to be open as a prayer space. I'm thinking we should move quickly — set up the room in a way that's welcoming for prayer, install security cameras and a simple door alarm to make it safer than before, and make it a place where people can come freely, individually or together, to pray. We should get that ready soon.
And then last night, after everything, came the news: Pastor Jayoung Eom's visa has been approved. She will be coming soon. I walked in the door just past nine in the evening, full of anticipation about what lies ahead — a joyful, full, grateful day.
Paul was a tireless worker. He planted churches, cared for them from a distance through letters, and offered wise pastoral and theological guidance wherever it was needed. In Colossians, he draws a line between what is coming and what is only a shadow — between the essential and the non-essential. There are people who lose sight of the substance and spend their energy on the peripheral, convinced all the while that they are doing the important work.
Paul's warning to the Colossian church is clear: don't let anyone judge you over food, drink, festivals, or sabbaths. Don't be pulled along by those who insist on a particular brand of humility or angel worship. These things were attempts to measure the depth of someone's faith by external markers. And Paul goes further — he names the deeper problem, which is the limit of religion as a system. Rules and religious forms can build a fence around behavior. They cannot change what is happening inside.
God is always with us. Jesus walks alongside us. He was here yesterday, he is here today, and he is the one who is coming. That conviction is the ground to stand on, and from that ground, the things that actually matter become clear.
Three things come to mind. First, there needs to be fruit. Fruitless effort is not something to find meaning in — good fruit comes from genuine, careful tending. A neglected field doesn't produce a good harvest. The church is the same. This means being honest — even unsentimental — about whether the effort is actually producing something.
Second, the goal has to stay clear. When everything gets attended to equally, time passes, the moment is missed, and nothing moves forward well. This is a pattern I keep running into lately. Ministry starts with a clear aim, then other things crowd in, and before long the aim is lost and the time is gone.
Third — and most important — don't forget that the Lord is always walking with us. He is walking with Yeolin Church. And yet we can fall into a kind of loneliness, as if no one is there. Usually it's because there hasn't been space for prayer, for the deep, unhurried confession that God is present. Life is busy and none of this is easy. But in exactly those moments, we need to be able to say it clearly: we are God's children, and there is work he intends to do through us. When we can say that with confidence, he will bring good fruit through us.
Hard work, commitment, and genuine humility — these produce a good harvest.
Reflection
No matter how detailed a shadow is, it is not the real thing. The real thing is Christ. Staying close to him is everything.
Intercessory Prayer
Today I have the Caucus meeting and the KMP gathering, and next week is the Korean Annual Conference. It is a full schedule — please pray that everything moves forward well. And please remember to pray that church ministry stays at the center, not pushed aside by everything else.
Pastor Jayoung Eom is coming from Korea. There is much to prepare. Please pray for her, for the preparations, and for the ministry we will do together.
