Titus 1:5–16, Thursday, October 22,

“They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.” (Titus 1:16a)
Titus is not the easiest letter to read through. But it surfaces one of Paul’s deepest concerns clearly: people who say they know God while their lives tell a different story. Paul asks Titus to teach and lead in a way that closes that gap.
This was not unique to the early church, and it hasn’t gone away. Every organization has people whose words run ahead of their actions — who sound responsible, who give the appearance of commitment, and who are noticed for it. The church is no different. Which is exactly why Paul spends so much time in this letter describing what a genuine leader actually looks like: not in terms of impressive speech, but in terms of daily, concrete behavior. Easily angered or not. Hospitable or not. Honest in dealing with money or not. These are the measures.
And it is not just about those in formal positions. Anyone who bears the name Christian carries a corresponding responsibility. The title and the life are meant to match.
Yesterday, the proceeds from the Oakland building sale were transferred into the church account. The building sold for $1.4 million; after commissions and fees, approximately $1.3 million came in. From that, $500,000 goes immediately back to the Annual Conference — that was the loan taken out when we relocated. Estimates for repairing the parsonage in Orinda are coming in above $200,000, and there are additional deferred repairs to the church building itself that will likely add another $100,000.
At the first meeting of the task force formed after the last board meeting, a proposal came forward: set aside around $400,000 as an endowment for future generations. The thinking behind it was meaningful — those who came before us built something through their faithfulness and sacrifice. The right response to receiving that is not to consume it, but to prepare something for those who will come after us. That struck me as genuinely wise.
When you add it all together, there is not much left over. And that is before the tithe to the Annual Conference that is required from the sale proceeds. The reality is that this transaction does not significantly change the operating picture for the church.
Once word gets out, people will assume we are now financially comfortable. We are not. But more than anything, I hope what spreads is a different kind of story — that Yeolin Church received something entrusted to it, took the responsibility seriously, and is using it with an eye toward the future rather than the present. That is the story worth telling.
Paul’s counsel to Titus is our counsel today as well. Not just words, but lives that match them. Not just a name, but the actions that go with it. A community that holds its responsibilities honestly — that is what we are working toward.
Church finances are tighter than we’d like. The building sale does not change that as much as some might expect. Ministry is expanding, and there is more to do. December will bring the stewardship campaign and the process of setting next year’s budget. I am hoping we face that together honestly — not with the illusion of abundance, but with a clear-eyed commitment to doing what we can with what we have.
Reflection
Knowing something in words and knowing it in the way you live are two different things. Real knowledge shows up in action.
Intercessory Prayer
Please pray for the outdoor worship service this Sunday. Even if the weather is cold, may gathering together outside become a special memory for the congregation.
Please pray for the church to keep growing — in depth, in commitment, and in the kind of community that is known more for what it does than for what it says.
