형제자매 여러분, 그러므로 나는 하나님의 자비하심을 힘입어 여러분에게 권합니다. 여러분의 몸을 하나님께서 기뻐하실 거룩한 산 제물로 드리십시오. 이것이 여러분이 드릴 합당한 예배입니다.  여러분은 이 시대의 풍조를 본받지 말고, 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아서, 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 완전하신 뜻이 무엇인지를 분별하도록 하십시오. (로마서 12:1-2)

로마서 12장은 “그러므로”라는 단어로 시작합니다. 이 한 단어 안에는 앞선 모든 은혜의 이야기가 담겨 있습니다. 우리가 아직 연약할 때, 아직 죄인 되었을 때, 하나님께서 먼저 사랑하셨다는 복음의 선언이 이 권면의 배경입니다. 바울은 의무를 말하기 전에 자비를 말합니다. 요구를 말하기 전에 은혜를 말합니다. 신앙은 부담에서 시작되지 않고, 하나님의 긍휼을 기억하는 자리에서 시작됩니다.

그래서 바울은 우리의 몸을 산 제물로 드리라고 말합니다. 더 이상 제단 위에 놓이는 죽은 제물이 아니라, 살아 있는 우리의 삶 전체를 하나님께 드리라는 것입니다. 예배는 주일의 한 순간이 아니라 우리의 시간과 선택, 관계와 생각, 말과 태도 속에서 드려집니다. 하나님은 우리의 일부가 아니라 우리의 전부를 원하십니다. 그것이 “합당한 예배”라고 말씀합니다.

또한 바울은 이 세대를 본받지 말라고 권면합니다. 세상은 끊임없이 우리를 자기 방식에 맞추려 합니다. 성공의 기준, 힘의 논리, 비교와 경쟁의 문화 속으로 우리를 끌어들입니다. 그러나 그리스도인은 외형을 바꾸는 사람이 아니라 마음이 새로워지는 사람입니다. 변화는 환경이 아니라 내면에서 시작됩니다. 성령께서 우리의 생각을 새롭게 하실 때, 우리는 비로소 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻을 분별할 수 있습니다.

오늘도 하나님의 자비 위에 서 있는 하루입니다. 은혜를 기억하는 사람은 다르게 살아갑니다. 강요가 아니라 감사로, 계산이 아니라 헌신으로, 두려움이 아니라 신뢰로 살아갑니다. 우리의 평범한 하루가 하나님께 드려지는 산 제물이 되기를 소망합니다.

묵상

오늘 나는 하나님의 자비를 기억하며 살고 있습니까, 아니면 여전히 나 자신의 기준과 세상의 방식에 따라 반응하고 있습니까? 혹시 하나님께 “산 제물”로 아직 내려놓지 못한 영역은 무엇입니까?

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to discern what God’s will is—His good, pleasing, and perfect will.”(Romans 12:1–2)

Romans 12 begins with the word “Therefore.” In that single word is contained the entire story of grace that has come before. While we were still weak, while we were still sinners, God loved us first. That declaration of the gospel forms the foundation of this appeal. Paul speaks of mercy before he speaks of duty. He speaks of grace before he speaks of demand. Faith does not begin with pressure, but with remembering the compassion of God.

For this reason, Paul urges us to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice. No longer a dead offering laid upon an altar, but our living, breathing, everyday lives given wholly to God. Worship is not confined to a single hour on Sunday. It is expressed in our time, our decisions, our relationships, our thoughts, our words, and our attitudes. God does not desire a portion of us, but the whole of us. This, Paul says, is our true and proper worship.

Paul also urges us not to conform to the pattern of this world. The world constantly presses us into its mold—its standards of success, its logic of power, its culture of comparison and competition. Yet the Christian life is not about outward adjustment, but inward renewal. Transformation begins not in our circumstances, but in our hearts. When the Holy Spirit renews our minds, we are able to discern God’s will—His good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Today again, we stand upon the mercy of God. Those who remember grace live differently. Not by compulsion, but by gratitude. Not by calculation, but by devotion. Not by fear, but by trust. May this ordinary day become a living sacrifice offered to God.

Reflection

Am I living today in the awareness of God’s mercy, or am I still reacting according to my own standards and the patterns of this world? Is there any area of my life that I have not yet surrendered to God as a “living sacrifice”?
