Romans 16:17–20, Tuesday, September 22, 로마서 16:17-20, 9월22일 화요일
"나는 여러분이 선한 일에는 슬기롭고, 악한 일에는 순진하기를 바랍니다." (롬 16:19b)
로마서의 마지막 부분입니다. 바울이 긴 편지를 마무리하면서 마지막 당부를 남깁니다. 따뜻한 인사들이 이어지다가 갑자기 경계하라는 말이 나옵니다. 분열을 일으키고 올무를 놓는 사람들을 경계하고 멀리하라는 것입니다.
17절에 "여러분이 배운 교훈을 거슬러서." 처음부터 다른 것을 가르치는 사람이 있는게 아니라, 이미 배운 것을 거스르는 사람들에 대한 경계를 이야기합니다. 공동체 안에 들어와서 이미 세워진 것을 흔드는 사람들, 이것이 더 위험한 이유가 있습니다. 밖에서 오는 공격은 알아채고 방어할 수 있는데, 안에서 생기는 분열은 무엇이 문제인지도 모른채 문제에 몰입되어 공동체가 흔들립니다.
최근에 교회가 교회를, 교인들이, 교인들을 공격하는 경우를 종종봅니다. 배교라는 이름으로 생각이 다르고 방향이 다르다는 이유로 자기들은 순수하고 다른 교회는 그렇지 않다고 이야기합니다. 이 어리석은 태도는 이미 바울이 지적한 내용들입니다.
18절에서 이런 분들이 특징이 나옵니다. "그리스도를 섬기는 것이 아니라 자기네 배를 섬기는 것." 배를 섬긴다는 것은 자기 이익을 위한다는 것입니다. 그런데 그것이 잘 드러나지 않습니다. "그럴듯한 말과 아첨하는 말로 순진한 사람들의 마음을 속이는 것"이라고 합니다. 말이 그럴듯합니다. 아첨합니다. 좋은 말을 합니다. 마치 이시대에 유일하게 하나님앞에 바로선것 처럼 이야기하니, 그래서 분별하기가 어렵습니다.
이런 로마교회에 대해 19절에서 바울은 격려하는 말로 바뀝ㅂ니다. 로마 교회의 순종이 소문났다는 것입니다. 기뻐한다는 것입니다. 그리고 바울이 바라는 것이 나옵니다. "선한 일에는 슬기롭고, 악한 일에는 순진하기를 바랍니다."
이 말씀이 오늘 깊이 기억되어기를 바랍니다. 선한 일에는 슬기롭고, 악한 일에는 순진하라는 것. 보통 우리는 이것이 뒤집혀 있는 경우가 많습니다. 세상 일에는 지혜롭고 영리한데, 선한 일에는 순진하게 접근합니다. 반대로 악한 일에는 너무 익숙하고 노출되어 있습니다. 바울이 원하는 방향은 다릅니다. 선을 위해서는 적극적으로 지혜를 쓰고, 악에 대해서는 오히려 순진한 사람이 되라는 것입니다. 언뜻 이해가 가질 않는데, 문자 그대로 악에 대해서는 아무것도 모르는 것첢 굴라는 것입니다. 모른척하라는 뜻이겠죠. 선한일에 무지하고, 악한일에 밝은 사람들이 있습니다. 아니 세상은 그렇게 사는 것이 옳다고 여기게 하는 것 같습니다. 선한일에 주목하고 신기해하고, 악한일은 늘 겪는 것처럼 굽니다.
20절에 마지막 약속을 전합니다. "평화의 하나님께서 곧 사탄을 쳐부수셔서 여러분의 발 밑에 짓밟히게 하실 것입니다." 분열과 올무와 속임이 있는 자리에서도, 결국 하나님이 이기신다는 것입니다. 우리가 이기는 것이 아니라, 평화의 하나님이 이기신다는 것입니다. 그리고 그 은혜가 함께하기를 빈다는 것입니다.
우리는 가끔 내가, 우리가 무언가를 결단해야만 이길 수 있다는 생각을 합니다. 하나님보다 앞서서 말하고 행동하는 경우 하나님이 하시는 일이 아니라 자기가 하는일을 통해 마치 선한일을, 진정한 복음을 전하는 것이라고 착각합니다. 자신의 생각으로 울타리를 치지 말고 하나님이 어디까지 역사하시는지를 살피는 것이 우리들이 그리스도인이라 불리는 이유입니다.
오늘 하루 이 질문을 품고 지내시기를 부탁드립니다. 나는 선한 일에 얼마나 슬기로운가. 그리고 악에 대해서는 얼마나 순진한가. 분열을 일으키는 것에 경계하고 있는가, 아니면 나도 모르게 그 흐름에 휩쓸리고 있는가.

선한 일에는 슬기롭고, 악한 일에는 순진하게. 이것이 공동체를 지키는 방식입니다.

"I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil." (Romans 16:19b)
This is the closing section of Romans. Paul wraps up a long letter with a final word of caution — warm greetings flowing along, and then suddenly: watch out. Be on guard against those who cause divisions and create obstacles.
Verse 17 is specific: people who act contrary to the teaching you have learned. Not outsiders bringing a completely foreign message, but people inside the community who undermine what has already been established. That is what makes this kind of threat harder to deal with. An attack from the outside can be recognized and defended against. Division that grows from within is different — by the time you understand what the problem is, the community is already caught up in it.
This pattern hasn't disappeared. In recent years there are churches attacking other churches, believers going after other believers — using words like apostasy to say that anyone who thinks differently or moves in a different direction is impure, while they alone stand correctly before God. Paul already identified this a long time ago.
Verse 18 names the characteristic. Such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. Self-interest dressed in religious language. And it doesn't announce itself plainly. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. The words sound good. There's even something flattering about it. They speak as if they alone, in this generation, stand rightly before God — and that is exactly what makes it hard to discern.
Into that situation, Paul shifts tone in verse 19. The obedience of the Roman church is known everywhere, he says — and he is glad. And what he hopes for them follows: wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.
That sentence is worth sitting with. The usual pattern in our lives tends to run in the opposite direction. We are sharp and streetwise about the ways of the world, and naive when it comes to doing good. Meanwhile, we are far too comfortable with — even fascinated by — evil. Paul wants it reversed: bring full wisdom and energy to what is good, and stay genuinely simple about evil. Practically speaking, it means treating evil as something you don't know and don't need to know. Play dumb about it. The world teaches us to treat evil as the normal baseline and to be surprised by goodness. Paul says flip that entirely.
Verse 20 is the closing promise. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. Even in the presence of division, traps, and deception — God wins. Not us. The God of peace wins. And the grace of Jesus goes with you.
We sometimes convince ourselves that we have to decide something, do something, declare something — that the outcome depends on our resolution. When we get ahead of God that way, we end up calling our own work the gospel. The calling of a Christian is not to build our own fences around what we believe, but to watch how far God is actually moving — and follow.
Carry these questions with you today. How wise am I about what is good? How innocent am I about what is evil? Am I keeping watch against division — or have I already been swept along without noticing?
Reflection
Wise about good, innocent about evil. That is how a community stays whole.
Intercessory Prayer
Pastor Jayoung Eom had her visa interview yesterday. The consular officer took her passport and said the results would come soon — apparently some additional administrative processing is needed. Nothing easy seems to go simply. Please pray that it concludes well. The fact that they kept her passport likely means they intend to issue the visa.
The Mission Dinner is this Saturday. Please pray that it would be something genuinely meaningful — not just another event on the calendar, but a time that matters.
