Philippians 2:5-11
The Heart of Jesus
1. Today is Palm Sunday. It's a time to remember when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey from Bethphage, and the people waved palm branches and shouted, "Hosanna, King of David!"
2. As we know, this cheering crowd soon turns into an angry mob shouting for Jesus to be crucified.
3. What was the gospel that Jesus wanted to share with this fickle crowd, and what difference between what people expected and God's plan- the gospel of Jesus Christ is revealed in today's passage?
4. today's reading from Philippians seems to be an urgent letter from Paul to the church in Philippi.
5. I wonder if this is because similar problems were prevalent in the early church.
6. Growing up in church school and then in the middle and high school youth groups, I thought "unity" was always a part of the retreats, Bible school, and other topics.
7. at the middle school retreat, "Middle and high school united in Christ."
8. at youth retreats, "Youth united in the Lord."
9. So, is that unity? It doesn't work well, so they have such a theme every time.
10. even among the children, there are groups, cliques, and things like that.
11. Maybe we live more like a Born to be "division" or a Born to be "clique."
12. But why are we so obsessed with "oneness"?
13. Even in today's reading, "this mind" is sometimes translated as "attitude" in verse 5, which begins, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." 14.
14. This mind refers to verse 2's statement, "Be of one mind, with the same mind, with the same love."
15. "The same mind, one mind" is what Paul now asks of the Philippian church.
16. In light of this, being of one mind is difficult and even impossible.
In John 17, Jesus doesn't say, "strive for unity"; he says, "believe in unity."
18. We think that if we strive for something, we'll get it, but we don't strive for unity; we "believe in unity" to build a community in the shape of unity.
19. Have you ever had the experience that praying fervently changes the person you prayed for?
20. No, it doesn't. They say you can't change people; you can't fix them. Why doesn't it change when you pray fervently?
21. This is the same thing. If you expect a person to change through prayer, then you believe they already have, and you treat them as if they are, then they can change.
22. If you pray fervently for God to fulfill a request, living as if you believe it will happen is essential. I prayed, but it didn't happen. That's right. The world would be more complicated if everything we prayed for came true.
23. But there's a big difference between someone who prays and doesn't get what they want and believes it will happen.
24. As I write this sentence, I look back at my life, and I feel like God didn't listen to me then, and He left me floundering in the pit of my troubles.
25. But now that I look back on it, after all these years, I don't think there's anything God didn't hear.
26. I don't think much has gone my way, but I'm grateful that God has used me to reach this point.
27. Paul is not suggesting that we should "try" to have the mind of Jesus or the attitude of God but rather that we should walk through this life believing that we have the mind of Jesus.
28. It may not seem like a big difference, but there is a vast difference between thinking that I will become something because I try and believing that I have become something.
29. What difference does it make? The people who hailed Jesus as king, expecting to be satisfied, will not turn into an angry mob and call for his crucifixion,
30. people who go to church, practice their faith, and have a disagreement and falling out will not leave the church, give up their faith, or become so discouraged that they reject the whole of Christianity.
31. Most of the time, these mood swings and discouragements are caused by people who have their expectations, and the reality they encounter is always lower than their expectations. This is called disappointment.
32. Paul was well aware of this reality and witnessed that in the church, not unlike the world, it was not easy to be of the same love, mind, and heart.
33. This has always been a problem in the early church, and in verse 3, Paul tells us why this happens.
34. He points to rivalry and vanity. He's saying that pride, thinking that you're better than other people, worrying about your things, and not worrying about other people's things all cause people not to have one mind.
35. Paul tells the Philippian church to "have the mind of Christ Jesus".
36. Paul's question and point was, if the world and the church are the same, what difference can it make to what we believe about Jesus?
37. We do not have to work at it; we just have to believe that we already are.
38. Paul explicitly expresses the "mind of Christ Jesus" throughout the rest of the text.
39. In verse 6, "Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not take equality with God for granted."
40. There is an important message here.
41. nothing is given to us for granted, and I know that in raising my children these days, they sometimes take for granted what they have.
42. I have experienced people who take their rights for granted.
They take their things for granted and don't care about other people.
43. As we go through Lent, we're going through Palm Sunday, and now we're going through Passion Week.
44. It is important to remember that this is not just a time to remember that Jesus suffered and died on the cross.
45. Why did Jesus suffer, and why did he go to the cross? We all know that he did it to save us.
47. but that's God's plan, that God would try so hard and do so much to save us,
48. Jesus didn't take anything for granted, didn't claim anything for himself, and was equal to God.
49. "Rather, he emptied himself" and "took the form of a servant," as verse 7 says.
50. We should remember this aspect of Jesus as we go through Lent and Holy Week.
51. In these words, we are to be conformed to the mind of Jesus.
52. emptied himself, and the word emptied here is the Greek word "kenou," which means to neutralize himself, which is more realistic.
53. Jesus is powerful; that's what the Gospels are all about. He does miracles, he raises people, he enlightens people with his words, but even with all that power, he neutralizes himself,
54. who "took upon himself the form of a servant."
This is the mind of Jesus that we must remember.
56. we strive to reveal ourselves, even if it's just a little bit.
57. we spend our energy and strength on boasting.
58. We tell ourselves that we're justified in living the way we do, that we're smart, that if we lose, we're stupid.
59. We've gotten so used to being better than everyone else and having to be on display.
60. If the world is like that, why not the church? The church also pays attention to what it reveals, and most of the time, if it doesn't reflect my ideas, there are problems in the church.
61. last week, DS said that the reason why young people are disappointed in the church, even in other ethnic churches, is that they are conflicted and divided over similar issues.
62. In verse 8, it says that He did not make Himself a servant but humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
63. In this season of Lent, when we reflect on Jesus Christ's suffering, it is important for us to "join our bodies and minds to what Jesus himself did."
64. But do you know what the critical twist is?
65. In the text that follows, Paul describes Jesus as one who
66. who emptied himself, became a servant, and loved us even unto death.
67. Let me read with you verses 10-11: verse 10, So that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, verse 11, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
68. The people who were watching Jesus at that time might have said.
69. "Well, he drove people around like he was going to do something and ended up on a cross..."
70. From the world's point of view, you might see him as a prisoner who sinned and was executed or a leader who dreamed of revolution and died.
71. But the cross has a twist. What the world sees as shameful and horrific, Jesus emptied himself, humbled himself, and showed himself on the cross so that we could confess, "Jesus Christ is Lord!
72. We who believe in this love of the cross also have a reversal.
73. Today's world offers us amazing technologies and products without any sense of heaven, and they come with a huge price tag, making us feel like we are out of step with the world if we don't own them.
74. In this rushing world, we are gathered here to live a life that still strives to have the heart of Jesus.
75. dear saints, let us prioritize our lives well and live as true Christians, revealing our lives.
76. let us not hesitate, let us not worry, let us live in the world with the heart of Jesus, and I believe that we will live amid God's unexpected reversal.
77. I've been doing something called YouTube shorts lately. When thinking about whether or not to start this with ministers, the biggest stumbling block was embarrassment. It's hard to show your face and make a short message video in less than a minute.
78. a part of me thinks, "What if I see people I know," and there's a part of me that thinks, "What if something unexpected happens?
79. As we've all experienced, it can be a bit intimidating to try something you've never done before.
80. Anyway, we decided to do it for no other reason than that we are planning new things, such as moving the church, and we all agreed that we should prepare for the church relocation with a pioneering heart.
81. we had the same mindset.
82. I'm still embarrassed, though. A friend texted me and said, “Your doing everything (bend over backward.)"
83. I'm not trying to brag because I'm ashamed, but I'm going to do this because what I'm talking about is not something I'm ashamed of84. As a pastor, I am not embarrassed to share what I have to say with you, but only because I believe and am convinced.
84. I'm not embarrassed to share with you as a pastor because I'm ashamed of what I'm saying, but because I believe it's what I think.
85. I hope you will support me in this courage, and you will be encouraged to build your faith even more vital.
86."Having the mind of Jesus" I hope we can start with this together, and I hope we can boast with the same heart, mind, and love and be proud that we are members of the Open Church.
87. I was in LA last week for a meeting, so I took some time off and went to San Clemente Beach with a group of pastors.
88. It was a beautiful day, so we had a great time.
89. We walked into the pier, and many surfers were trying to surf.
90. I stood still and watched them surf for a long time.
91. They were waiting for a wave, and some surfers rode it while others just let it pass.
92. Never once did all the surfers catch a wave at once.
93. The waves kept coming, and the surfers floated in the water, trying to decide whether to ride them.
94. I remembered a story Pastor Rick Warren in a book
"God always sends waves, and it's up to us as individuals or as a community to choose to ride them."
96. I wasn't impressed When I read it in writing, but as I watched the surfers waiting for the wave that day, it made sense.
97. God sends us waves all the time—waves of grace, waves of change, waves for the church, waves for individuals.
98. But it's entirely up to us to ride those waves.
99. We can avoid it because we're afraid, we can overdo it because it's smaller than we expect, or we can get distracted and lose track of when it's time to ride the big wave.
100. In the end, it occurred to me that God continues to work, to work hard, and our choices bring it to fruition.
101. God continues to send waves to us now. He sends them to our open church, and he sends them to me personally, and he sends them to you personally.
102. Now, then, we have to decide whether to ride it or not.
103. This decision requires little thought. If we think about how long we should ride it, or if it's right, or if it's just right, and we miss the timing, we miss the wave.
104. Paul's exhortation to have the mind of Jesus is not simply a call to build a community of like-minded, like-loving people.
105. that Jesus loved us enough to make himself helpless, to become a servant, to die in the body of an enslaved person so that he could ride the wave.
106. He wouldn't have done the math if Jesus had been doing it.
107. To have the mind of Jesus is another way of saying, don't try to have it, but trust that it is already in you so that you can respond to God's zeal.
108. Dear saints, I earnestly hope that you and I will respond to God's zeal with the heart of Jesus.
빌립보서 2:5-11
예수의 마음
오늘은 종려주일입니다. 예수님이 벳바게에서 나귀를 타고 예루살렘 성으로 들어가시는데 사람들이 종려나무 가지를 흔들면서 “호산나 다윗의 왕”이라고 환호했던 장면을 기억하는 시간입니다.
잘 아시는 것처럼, 이렇게 환호했던 사람들이 곧 예수를 십자가에 못박으라고 소리치는 성난 군중으로 바뀌게 됩니다.
이런 변덕스러운 군중을 향해 예수님이 전하고자 하셨던 복음은 무엇이고, 사람들이 기대하는 것과 하나님의 계획, 즉 예수 그리스도의 복음의 방향이 얼마나 큰 차이가 있는지를 오늘 본문을 통해 확인할 수 있을 것 같습니다.
오늘 읽은 빌립보서 본문은 바울이 빌립보 교회에 보내는 간절함이 담겨있는 것 같습니다.
아마 비슷한 문제들이 초대교회안에서도 가득했기때문에 그런 것이 아닐까 하는 생각이 듭니다. .
어릴 적 교회학교부터 자라면서 중고등부 청년부에서 신앙생활 할 때, 늘 수련회나, 성경학교에서 나눈 주제들은 대부분 “하나되자”라는 말이 꼭 들어갔던 것 같습니다.
중고등부 수련회 때 보면, “그리스도안에서 하나되는 중고등부”
청년부 수련회를 가도 “주님안에 하나되는 청년부”
그래서 하나가 되는가? 잘 안됩니다. 잘 안되니까 매번 그런 주제를 가지는 것이겠죠.
뭐 아이들 사이에서도 서로 그룹, 파, 뭐 그런게 있더라고요.
그러니까, 어쩌면 우리들은 본투비 “분열” 또는 본투비 “파벌”에 가까운 삶을 살아가는 것 같습니다.
그런데 왜 우리들은 “하나됨”에 집착을 할까요?
오늘 읽은 본문에서도 5절에 보면, “여러분 안에 이 마음을 품으십시오. 그것은 곧 그리스도 예수의 마음이기도 합니다.”라고 시작되는 구절에서 “이 마음”은 “태도”로 번역되기도 합니다.
여기서 말하는 이 마음은 바로 “같은 생각, 같은 사랑으로 한 마음이 되라는” 2절말씀을 가리키고 있습니다.
바울도 지금 빌립보 교회에 요청하는 것이 “같은 마음, 한마음”입니다.
이런 걸 보면, 한마음을 품으라는 것은 꽤 어렵고 어쩌면 가능하지 않은 것처럼 보이기도 합니다.
요한복음 17장에서 예수님이 “하나됨을 노력하라”라고 말씀하시지 않고, “하나됨을 믿으라”고 말씀하십니다.
우리들은 뭔가 노력하면 그것을 반드시 이뤄낼 수 있을 것이라고 생각하는데, 하나됨을 위해서 노력해서 하나가 될 수 있는 것이 아니라, “하나가 된 줄 믿어야” 하나된 모양으로 공동체를 세워갈 수 있다는 것입니다.
간절히 기도하면 여러분 기도한대로 사람이 바뀌는 경험을 해보셨나요?
안 바뀝니다. 사람 안 바뀐다고 하잖아요. 흔히 사람은 고쳐 쓰는 거 아니라고 하잖아요. 간절히 기도하는데 왜 안 바뀝니까?
이것도 마찬가지입니다. 기도를 통해 사람이 바뀌기를 기대한다면, 이미 그리 된 줄 믿고, 그 사람을 대하면 그 사람은 바뀔 수 있습니다.
간절히 기도함으로 하나님께서 이루어 주시기를 기도하신다면, 그리 될 줄 믿으며 사는 것이 중요합니다. 기도했는데, 안되네, 맞습니다. 기도한다고 다 이루어지면 세상이 어떻겠어요.
그런데 기도한대로 안되는 것 같아도, 그렇게 될 줄 믿고 사는 사람 하고는 큰 차이가 있습니다.
제가 이 문장을 쓰면서 제가 지나온 삶을 돌아보니까, 하나님께서는 그때는 안 들어 주시는 것 같아요. 한없이 고난의 구렁텅이에 허우적거리도록 내버려두시는 것 같아요.
그런데 한참 시간이 지나서 지금 돌이켜 보니까, 하나님께서 안 들어 주신게 없는 것 같아요.
내 뜻대로 된 것은 별로 없는 것 같은데, 하나님이 뜻하신 대로 저를 여기까지 사용해서 오신 것 같다는 생각이 드니까, 너무 감사한 거에요.
오늘 바울이 나누고자 하는 것은 “노력”해서 예수님의 마음, 하나님의 태도를 가져야 한다는 것이 아니라, 우리가 “예수의 마음을 가진 자”라고 믿고 이 땅을 살아가야 한다는 것을 이야기하고 있다고 볼 수 있습니다.
큰 차이가 없는 것 같지만, 내가 노력해서 될 것이라고 생각하는 것하고는 그렇게 되었다고 믿는 것은 굉장히 큰 차이가 있습니다.
이게 어떤 차이를 만드냐 하면, 적어도, 환호하며 자기들의 만족을 채워줄 것이라고 기대하며 예수를 왕이라고 치켜세웠던 자들이, 성난 군중으로 바뀌어서 예수를 못박으라고 이야기하지는 않을 것이고,
교회를 다니고, 신앙생활을 하면서 서로 마음이 맞지 않고 갈라진다고 해서, 교회를 떠나거나 신앙생활을 포기하거나, 크게 낙심한 나머지 기독교 전체를 부정하는 일은 일어나지 않을 것입니다.
대부분, 이런 변덕과 낙심은 자기의 기대치가 있어요. 그런데 부딪히는 현실은 늘 자신의 기대보다 낮은 것을 경험합니다. 이럴 때 실망이라는 것을 하게 되죠.
바울은 이런 현실을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그리고 세상과 별반 다르지 않게 교회 안에서 서로가 같은 사랑, 같은 마음, 한마음이 되는 것이 쉽지 않다는 것을 목격하게 되었습니다.
초대교회때부터 늘 이런 문제가 있었다는 것입니다. 바울은 이런 일이 벌어지는 원인을 3절에 보면 이렇게 이야기 합니다.
경쟁심과 허영 때문이라고 지적하고 있습니다. 여기에 더해서 교만하고, 다른 사람보다 자신이 더 낫다고 평가하고, 자기일에만 신경 쓰지 다른 사람의 일은 신경 쓰지 않는 모습이 한마음을 갖지 못하게 하는 원인이라고 이야기하고 있습니다.
그래서 바울이 빌립보 교회를 향해서, “그리스도 예수의 마음을”품으라고 이야기하고 있는 것입니다.
세상은 그렇다 쳐도 교회도 똑같으면 예수 믿는 것이 무엇이 다를 수 있겠는가?가 바울의 질문이고 지적이었습니다.
노력해서 되는게 아니라, 우리들이 이미 그렇게 되었다고 믿어야 한다는 것입니다.
바울은 이어지는 본문을 통해 구체적으로 “그리스도 예수의 마음”을 표현하고 있습니다.
6절에서, “예수님은 하나님의 모습을 지니셨으나, 하나님과 동등함을 당연하게 여기지 않으시고”
여기에서 중요한 메시지가 담겨있습니다.
우리에게 주어진 것은 당연한 것이 없습니다. 요즘에 저도 아이들을 키우면서 느끼는 것은 자기들에게 주어진 것을 당연하게 여길 때가 있어요.
자기의 권리를 당연하게 여기는 사람들을 경험할 때가 있습니다.
자기 것은 기가 막히게 챙기면서 다른 사람에게는 관심이 없어요.
우리들이 사순절기를 보내면서 종려주일, 이제 고난주간을 지내게 될 것입니다.
우리가 이 시간을 그냥 예수님이 고난 당하시고, 십자가에 달려 돌아가신 것을 슬퍼하며 보내라고 기억하는 시간이 아니라는 것을 기억해야합니다.
예수님이 왜 고난 당하시고, 왜 십자가에 달리셨습니까? 우리를 구원하기 위해 그러셨다는 것은 다 아는 이야기잖아요.
그런데 그게 하나님의 계획이 그렇다는 건데, 하나님이 그렇게 열심히 최선을 다해서 우리를 구원하시려고 그러셨다는 건데,
예수님이 스스로 당연하게 자기의 권리를 주장하지 않으시고, 하나님과 동등하다는 것을 당연하게 여기지 않으셨다고 합니다.
7절에서 말씀하시는 것처럼, “오히려 자기를 비워서”, “종의 모습을 취하셨다”는 것입니다.
우리들이 사순절, 고난주간을 보내면서 기억해야할 것은 바로 예수님의 이런 모습입니다.
예수의 마음을 닮아야 한다는 것은 바로 이 말씀에 있습니다.
스스로 자기를 비워서, 여기서 비우다는 말은 헬라어로 “케누”라는 단어를 썼는데, 이 말은 스스로를 무력화 시겼다 라는 뜻을 가지고 있어요. 더 실감나는 뜻이죠.
예수님이 능력이 있어요. 복음서에서 나오는 내용이 다 그런 내용이잖아요. 기적을 베푸시고, 사람을 살리시고, 말씀으로 사람을 깨우치시고, 그런데 그런 능력이 있어도 스스로를 무력화시키셔서,
스스로 “종의 모습을 취하셨다”라고 말씀하고 있습니다.
우리들이 기억해야할 예수님의 마음은 바로 이것입니다.
우리는 조금이라도 자신을 드러내기 위해 노력하잖아요.
자랑하는 것에 힘과 에너지를 씁니다.
그렇게 사는 것이 정당하다고 이야기해요. 똑똑하다고 인정해요. 손해보면 바보라고 이야기하잖아요.
그러니까, 우리들은 악착같이 다른 사람보다 더 나아 보여야 하고, 드러내 보여야하는 것에 익숙 해져버렸습니다.
세상이 그렇다고 교회는 안 그런가요? 교회도 드러내는 것에 주목하고, 대부분 내 생각이 반영되지 않으면 교회안에서 문제가 생긴다고 하잖아요.
지난주에 감리사님이 다른 인종 교회에서도 청년들이 교회에 실망한 이유가 이런 비슷한 문제들 때문에 갈등하고 반목하는 것 때문이라고 말씀 하시잖아요.
이어지는 8절에 보면, 스스로 종만 되 신게 아니에요. 자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 순종하셨다고 합니다.
예수 그리스도의 고난을 묵상하는 이 사순절에 우리들이 깊이 새겨야 할 것은 “예수님이 스스로 행하신 일에 우리의 몸과 마음이 동참하는 것”입니다.
그런데 중요한 반전은 무엇인 줄 아세요?
이어지는 본문에서 바울은 이런 예수님을
스스로를 비워 내시고, 종이 되셔서 우리를 죽기까지 사랑하신 예수님이
10절-11절을 다같이 읽어볼께요. 10절, 그리하여, 하늘과 땅 위와 땅 아래 있는 모든 것들이 예수의 이름 앞에 무릎을 꿇고, 11절, 모두가 예수 그리스도는 주님이시라고 고백하여, 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하셨습니다.
당시에 예수를 지켜보던 사람들이 이런 이야기를 할법 합니다.
“뭔가 할 것처럼 사람들을 몰고 다니더니, 결국 십자가에서 죽었구만…”
세상의 관점에서는 죄를 짓고 사형당한 죄수, 또는 혁명을 꿈꾸나 죽게 된 지도자로 여길 수도 있습니다.
그런데 십자가는 반전이 있습니다. 세상은 부끄럽고 흉악하다고 여기는 것을 예수님은 자기를 비워 내시고, 스스로 낮추셔서, 보여준 십자가 사건은 오히려 예수 그리스도는 주님이시다~!라고 고백할 수 있게 하셨다는 것입니다.
이 십자가의 사랑을 믿는 우리들도 반전이 있습니다.
요즘 세상은 하늘 높은 줄 모르고 엄청난 기술과 제품들을 보여주고 있습니다. 그리고 엄청난 값을 매겨서 그것을 소유하지 않으면 세상에서 뒤떨어진 것처럼 여기게 합니다.
이렇게 몰아치는 세상에서 우리들은 여전히 예수의 마음을 품는 것을 위해 노력하는 삶을 살기 위해 이자리에 모였습니다.
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 삶의 우선순위를 잘 세우시고, 진정한 그리스도인으로서 삶을 드러내며 살아갑시다.
주저하지 말고, 걱정하지 말고, 예수의 마음으로 세상을 살아갑시다. 그러면 우리들은 예상치 못한 하나님의 반전의 역사가운데 살아가게 될 줄 믿습니다.
요즘 유튜브 숏츠라는 것을 하고 있습니다. 사역자들하고 이것을 시작할지, 말지 고민하면서 가장 큰 걸림돌은 창피함이었습니다. 얼굴을 드러내고, 1분안에 짧은 메시지 영상을 만든다는 것이 여간 부끄러운 게 아닙니다.
아는 사람들이라고 보면 어떻게 하나 하는 생각도 들고, 예상치 못한 일이 벌어지면 어떻게 하나 하는 불안함도 있고,
다들 경험 하시겠지만, 한번도 안 한 것을 해본다는 것은 여간 부담스러운 것이 아니죠.
어쨌든, 하기로 결정한 이유는 다른 이유는 없고, 저희가 새로운 일을 계획하고 있잖아요. 교회를 이전하는 것도 그렇고, 이런 일들을 어떤 마음으로 사역자들끼리 마음을 모았냐 하면, 개척하는 마음으로 교회 이전을 준비해야 한다는데 다같이 동의했어요.
같은 마음을 품은거죠.
그래도 여전히 챙피해요. 친구가 문자가 왔어요. “별 걸 다하는 군..”
자랑 하려고 하는거 아니에요. 부끄럽 다니까요. 그런데 이걸 하겠다는 마음을 품은 것은 제가 지금 이야기하는 것은 부끄러운 것이 아니기 때문입니다.
목사로서 여러분들에게 나누는 말씀이 챙피한게 아니라, 제가 믿고 확신이 있기 때문이라고 믿기 때문이에요.
이 용기에 응원해주시고, 여러분들도 여러분의 믿음을 더욱 든든히 세워 가기 위한 지금보다 더 힘을 내시는 마음을 모아 주시기 바랍니다.
“예수의 마음을 갖는 것” 이것부터 함께 시작할 수 있으면 좋겠습니다. 그리고 같은 마음, 같은 생각, 같은 사랑으로 자랑하며 우리들이 열린교회 성도라는 것을 자랑스러워 했으면 좋겠습니다.
지난주에 LA에 미팅이 있어서 다녀왔어요. 잠깐 짬이 나서 함께 모인 목사님들 하고 샌클레멘테 비치에 다녀왔어요.
날이 너무 좋으니 딱 좋은 시간을 가졌던것 같아요.
피어를 걸어서 들어가는데, 서퍼들이 서핑을 하려고 잔뜩 몰려들었더라고요
가만히 이들이 서핑하는 것을 한참을 바라보았습니다
파도를 기다리고 있는데, 어떤 서퍼는 그 파도를 타지만 어떤 서퍼들은 그 파도를 그냥 지나보내더라고요.
한번도 한꺼번에 모든 서퍼들이 파도를 타는 경우가 없었어요.
파도는 계속해서 밀려오고, 서퍼들은 그 파도를 탈지 말지를 고민하면서 바다위에 떠 있더라고요.
그때 릭워렌 목사님이 하신 이야기가 떠올랐습니다.
“하나님은 늘 파도를 보내시는데, 그 파도를 타는 것은 개인 또는 공동체가 선택할 몫이다.”
제가 글로 읽었을때는 별 감흥이 없었느데, 그날 파도를 기다리는 서퍼들을 보면서 이 문장이 이해가 되었어요.
하나님은 늘 우리에게 파도를 보내십니다. 은혜의 파도이든, 변화의 파도이든, 교회나 개인을 위한 것들을 보내주시죠.
그런데 그 파도를 타는 것은 전적으로 우리들이 선택하는 것 같아요.
두려워서 피하기도 하고, 기대보다 작아서 지나치게 하기도 하고, 또는 다른 생각을 하다가 정작 중요한 파도를 탈 타이밍을 잃어버리기도하고.
결국 하나님은 계속해서 일하시고, 열심히 하시는데, 그것의 열매를 맺는 것은 우리들이 어떤 선택을 하냐에 따라 달라진다는 생각이 들었습니다.
하나님은 지금 우리들에게도 파도를 계속보내주십니다. 우리 열린교회를 향해서도 보내주시고, 개인적으로 저와 여러분에게도 똑같이 하나님은 열심으로 파도를 보내주십니다.
그러면, 이제 우리들이 그것을 탈지 안탈지를 결정해야하는 거에요.
이 결정을 위해서는 생각이 많으면 안됩니다. 얼마다 길게 탈지 또는 마땅한지, 아니면 적당한지 이런 생각을 하다가 타이밍을 놓치면 파도를 놓치게 되는 것이죠.
예수의 마음을 지니라는 바울의 권면은 단순하게 그런 마음으로 같은 마음, 같은 사랑 하나된 공동체를 세우자고 하는 이야기가 아닙니다.
예수님도 스스로 무력화시키셔서, 종의 몸으로 죽기까지 우리를 사랑하셨다는 것은 밀려오는 파도를 그냥 타신거에요.
만약 예수님이 계산을 이란걸 하셨다면 이렇게 못하셨을거에요.
예수의 마음을 품으라는 것은 다르게 표현하면, 노력해서 그 마음을 가지는 것이 아니라, 이미 그 마음이 내 안에 있는 것을 믿으라는 표현입니다. 그래야 하나님의 열심에 응답할 수 있기때문입니다.
