"Everyone who believes is justified through him." (Acts 13:39)

Yesterday, reading the Sokwae group chat where members were exchanging Chuseok greetings, I realized today is actually Chuseok. I ran an old family photo through an AI generator and it came back with the image above — very AI-looking, but fitting enough for a Chuseok greeting. The homeland is in the middle of the holiday. We are far away in America, but this is our small way of marking it together. Please take it in that spirit.

Director Kevin is visiting Korea right now — his first time back in 23 years. He said he felt nervous and excited in the same breath. He arrived in the early hours, ordered minari gomtang, and sent me a photo. Before he left, I told him that arriving at dawn means your first meal should be something restorative, and he remembered. He sent me a photo of a bowl of minari gomtang — a dish I've never even had myself — at some early hour from a Seoul back street. That image of him: 23 years away, landing in the middle of Chuseok when most things are closed, ordering something carefully chosen, sending a photo. I feel like a parent watching a child wade out into the water. I pray the visit is good and that he comes home well. I hope those 23 years of distance get filled with something joyful and full of gratitude.

Today's passage is from Paul's sermon at the synagogue in Pisidian Antioch — perhaps the clearest window into the heart of Paul's entire ministry. Verse 32: We tell you the good news: what God promised our ancestors he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. Good news — the gospel. And the content of that gospel is this: the promise made long ago has now been fulfilled. What was anticipated has arrived.

Paul traces this through the Psalms — You are my Son; today I have become your Father — reading the resurrection as God's declaration and vindication of Jesus as Son. Then he connects it to the promise made to David: holy and sure blessings, now given through Jesus.

If you had to summarize Paul's entire missionary effort in one sentence, it might be this: the promises God made in the ancient past have already been fulfilled — not someday, now. Religion in general tends to put its weight on anticipation, on what is still coming. Christianity is different. It is a confession of what has already happened. Not it will be but it has been done. The joy of faith is not something we wait to experience somewhere ahead of us. It is something we confess and inhabit right now — which is why we can say: God is with us, Jesus walks alongside us. Not because we hope it will be true, but because it already is.

The 23-year gap Kevin is navigating — he is probably wondering how to make sense of all that time. I told him the gap will be filled with something larger and more mysterious than he expects. We are people who prepare for the future and live in the present. We are not people who stay stuck in what has passed. Paul is saying the same thing today: the ancient promise has been fulfilled. Through Jesus, everyone who believes is already justified. The gospel is not it will happen — it is the wonder of saying it already has.

Reflection

The old promise has been fulfilled in Jesus. Everyone who believes is justified. This simple gospel is as valid today as it ever was.

Intercessory Prayer

  1. The choir seminar is tomorrow. Please pray for it — that it would be a time filled with God's grace and love.

  2. The Mission Dinner is also tomorrow. Please pray and come — may it be a time overflowing with the grace and love of God.
