"그들은 사도들의 가르침에 몰두하며, 서로 사귀는 일과 빵을 떼는 일과 기도에 힘썼다." (행 2:42, 새번역)

오순절에 베드로의 설교를 들은 사람들이 마음이 찔립니다. "우리가 어떻게 하면 좋겠습니까?" 이 질문이 오늘 본문의 시작입니다. 지식으로 듣는 것이 아니라, 마음이 움직인 것입니다. 설교가 정보가 아니라 찌름이 된 것입니다.

베드로의 대답이 간단합니다. 회개하고, 세례를 받고, 성령을 선물로 받으라는 것입니다. 그리고 39절에서 이 약속이 누구를 위한 것인지를 말합니다. "여러분과 여러분의 자녀와 또 멀리 떨어져 있는 모든 사람." 지금 여기 있는 사람들만이 아닙니다. 자녀들도, 멀리 있는 사람들도. 하나님이 부르시는 모든 사람에게 주신 약속이라는 것입니다.

그 날에 삼천 명이 세례를 받습니다. 숫자가 인상적이지만, 바로 다음 장면이 더 마음에 걸립니다. 42절입니다. 그들이 무엇을 했는지가 나옵니다. 사도들의 가르침에 몰두하고, 서로 사귀고, 빵을 떼고, 기도에 힘썼습니다. 네 가지입니다. 말씀, 교제, 성찬, 기도. 이것이 초대 교회의 모습이었습니다.

몰두하며, 힘썼다! 열심이 있었다는 것입니다. 억지로 한 것이 아니라, 마음이 찔린 사람들이 자연스럽게 모이고, 나누고, 먹고, 기도했습니다. 신앙이 의무가 아니라 삶이 된 것입니다.

44절과 45절을 마치 초대교회를 가장 이상적인 모습으로 인식하게 하는 장면이 등장합니다. "모든 것을 공동으로 소유했다. 재산을 팔아서 필요한 사람에게 나누어주었다"는 것입니다. 이것이 가능했던 이유가 있습니다. 마음이 찔렸기 때문입니다. 성령을 받았기 때문입니다. 강요해서 된 것이 아니라, 변화된 마음에서 자연스럽게 나온 것입니다. 당시 모든 것을 공유했다!는 개념은 지금의 개념과 다릅니다. 재산을 팔아서 나누어주었다는 의미도 다릅니다. 희년법이 살아있던, 평생 재산의 개념과 세대와 세대를 물려주는 재산의 개념이 없던 시절이었습니다.

47절에 사람들이 교회를 평가합니다. "그들은 모든 사람에게서 호감을 샀다." 교회가 전도하기 위해 노력한 것이 아닙니다. 그냥 이렇게 살았더니 사람들이 호감을 가졌다는 것입니다. 그리고 "주님께서는 구원 받는 사람을 날마다 더하여 주셨다." 교회가 숫자를 늘린 것이 아닙니다. 주님이 더하여 주셨다는 것입니다.

초대 교회를 이상화하는 것은 주의해야 합니다. 그들도 갈등이 있었고 문제가 있었습니다. 그런데 오늘 본문이 보여주는 것은 어떤 교회가 세상에 호감을 사는지입니다. 전략이 아니라, 변화된 삶. 프로그램이 아니라, 함께 먹고 나누고 기도하는 일상. 그것이 사람들을 끌어당겼다는 것입니다.

요즘 교회가 어떤 모습이어야 하는지에 대한 고민이 많습니다. 오늘 본문이 그 답의 한 모습을 보여줍니다. 말씀에 몰두하고, 서로 사귀고, 함께 먹고, 기도하는 것. 거창하지 않습니다. 그런데 그것이 세상을 움직였습니다.

묵상

교회가 세상에 호감을 사는 것은 전략이 아니라 삶입니다. 함께 먹고, 나누고, 기도하는 그 일상이 복음입니다.

중보기도

1. 교우들의 건강을 위해서 기도합니다. 회복되고 이번 주일에 하나님께 은혜롭게 예배하기 원합니다.

2. 교회학교, 유스, 청년 장년 사역을 위해서 기도해주세요.

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." (Acts 2:42)

The people who heard Peter's sermon at Pentecost were cut to the heart. Brothers, what shall we do? That question is where today's passage begins. They were not processing information — something moved inside them. The sermon didn't land as content. It landed as a wound.

Peter's answer is simple. Repent, be baptized, receive the Holy Spirit as a gift. And in verse 39, he says who this promise is for. For you and your children and for all who are far off — for all whom the Lord our God will call. Not just the people standing there. Their children too. People far away. Everyone God calls.

Three thousand people were baptized that day. The number is striking. But what comes right after is what stays with me longer. Verse 42. What they actually did. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, to prayer. Four things. The Word, community, the Lord's Supper, prayer. That is the early church.

Devoted themselves. Devoted to. There was genuine enthusiasm here. Not obligation. People whose hearts had been cut open naturally gathered, shared, ate together, prayed. Faith had become life, not duty.

Verses 44 and 45 give us the scene that tends to make the early church look like the ideal we can never reach. They held everything in common. They sold property and possessions and distributed to anyone who had need. What made this possible was not a policy — it was a pierced heart, and the Spirit received. It came from changed people, not from a program. And the economic context was different too. The concept of accumulated generational wealth we take for granted today was not the operating assumption of that world. The Jubilee tradition was still alive. What ownership meant was simply different.

Verse 47 records what the watching world made of all this. They enjoyed the favor of all the people. The church was not running an outreach strategy. They simply lived this way — and people were drawn to it. And then: the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. The church didn't grow itself. The Lord added.

We should be careful about idealizing the early church. There was conflict. There were problems. But what today's passage shows us is what kind of church earns the goodwill of the people around it. Not strategy — transformed lives. Not programs — the ordinary rhythm of eating together, sharing, praying. That is what drew people in.

There is a lot of conversation these days about what the church should look like. Today's passage offers one answer. Devoted to the Word, to one another, to eating together, to prayer. Nothing grand. And yet it moved the world.

Reflection

What earns the church goodwill in the world is not strategy — it is life. The ordinary rhythm of eating, sharing, and praying together is the gospel made visible.
