외부 사람들에게는 지혜롭게 대하고, 기회를 선용하십시오. (골 4:5)

바울은 기도에 힘쓰라고 말합니다. 그냥 기도하라가 아니라 힘쓰라고 합니다. 기도는 편안한 자리에서만 일어나는 일이 아닙니다. 힘을 쏟아야 하는 일입니다. 그리고 그 기도 안에서 감사하는 마음으로 깨어 있으라고 합니다. 깨어 있다는 것은 하나님이 지금 무엇을 하고 계신지를 보겠다는 자세입니다. 졸지 않겠다는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 움직임을 놓치지 않겠다는 뜻입니다.

그런데 바울이 이어서 부탁하는 내용이 눈에 들어옵니다. 전도의 문을 열어달라고 기도해달라는 것입니다. 바울은 감옥에 갇혀 있었습니다. 물리적으로 문이 닫혀 있었습니다. 그런데 그가 구한 것은 감옥 문이 아니라 전도의 문이었습니다. 상황이 닫혀 있어도 하나님이 여시는 문은 다른 문입니다. 우리는 자주 눈앞의 닫힌 문만 봅니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 보지 못하는 곳에서 다른 문을 준비하고 계십니다.

어제 트리니티 채플 지붕 꼭대기에 서너 번을 오르락내리락했습니다. 스타링크를 설치해야 했습니다. 청년모임을 하는 채플인데 인터넷이 제대로 되지 않으니 학생들이 불편해하는 게 늘 마음에 걸렸습니다. 직접 지붕에 올라 설치하면서 솔직히 이런 생각이 들었습니다. 이렇게까지 해야 하나. 땀이 나고 다리가 후들거리고 몇 번을 올라갔다 내려왔다 했습니다.

그런데 지붕 위에 서서 아래를 내려다보니 학생들이 캠퍼스를 오가는 게 보였습니다. 그 모습을 보는 순간 생각이 선명해졌습니다. 이 인터넷 하나로 청년들이 자유롭게 공부하고 예배 자료를 찾고 이 공간을 더 잘 활용할 수 있겠구나. 그리고 다음 학기에는 주일예배를 오후에 드려야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 막연했던 생각이었는데 지붕 위에서 확신이 됐습니다. 학생들이 다니는 그 길목을 내려다보니 이건 해야 되는 일이라는 것이 눈에 보였습니다.

바울의 말대로라면 그것이 기회를 활용하는 일입니다. 외부 사람들에게 지혜롭게 처신하고 기회를 잘 활용하라는 말씀은 거창한 전도 전략이 아닙니다. 지붕 위에 올라가 인터넷을 다는 일, 청년들이 편하게 모일 수 있는 환경을 만드는 일, 그런 작은 수고가 전도의 문이 될 수 있습니다. 하나님이 여시는 문은 우리의 성실한 수고 위에 열립니다.

기도에 힘쓴다는 것은 무릎만의 일이 아닙니다. 지붕을 오르락내리락하면서도 기도할 수 있습니다. 이 수고가 헛되지 않게 해달라고, 이 작은 공간을 통해 청년들의 마음에 문이 열리게 해달라고. 감사하는 마음으로 깨어 있다는 것은 그런 것입니다. 힘든 가운데서도 하나님이 하고 계신 일을 발견하는 눈입니다.

오늘도 우리에게 닫혀 있는 문이 있을 수 있습니다. 그러나 바울처럼 구해야 할 것은 내 상황의 문이 아니라 전도의 문입니다. 그리고 그 문 앞에서 지혜롭게 처신하고 기회를 활용하는 것은 오늘 내가 할 수 있는 작은 수고를 성실히 감당하는 것입니다.

지금 내 앞에 닫혀 있는 문은 무엇입니까? 하나님이 열고 계신 다른 문을 보고 있습니까?

“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.” (Colossians 4:5)

Paul urges us to devote ourselves to prayer. He does not simply say “pray,” but to devote ourselves to it. Prayer is not something that happens only in comfort. It is something that requires effort. And within that prayer, he tells us to remain alert with a thankful heart. To be alert does not simply mean staying awake—it means having the posture of watching what God is doing right now. It means not missing His movement.

Then what Paul asks next stands out. He asks for prayer that a door for the gospel may be opened. Paul was in prison. Physically, doors were closed to him. Yet what he asked for was not the prison door to be opened, but a door for the gospel. Even when circumstances are closed, the door God opens is a different kind of door. We often focus only on the closed doors in front of us. But God is preparing other doors in places we cannot see.

Yesterday, I went up and down the roof of the Trinity Chapel several times. I needed to install Starlink. It’s a chapel where our young adults gather, and it had been on my heart that the poor internet connection made things inconvenient for the students. As I climbed up and installed it myself, I honestly found myself thinking, Do I really have to go this far? I was sweating, my legs were shaking, and I went up and down several times.

But as I stood on the roof and looked down, I saw students walking through the campus. In that moment, my thoughts became clear. Through this one internet connection, students would be able to study freely, access worship materials, and use this space more effectively. And then another thought came—I should move Sunday worship to the afternoon next semester. It had been a vague idea before, but on that rooftop, it became a conviction. Watching the path those students walked, I could see clearly that this was something that needed to be done.

According to Paul, that is what it means to make the most of an opportunity. Being wise toward outsiders and making the most of opportunities is not about grand evangelistic strategies. Climbing up a roof to install internet, creating an environment where young people can gather comfortably—such small efforts can become a door for the gospel. The doors God opens are built upon our faithful labor.

Devoting ourselves to prayer is not only something we do on our knees. We can pray even as we go up and down a roof. Praying that this effort would not be in vain, that through this small space the hearts of young people would be opened. To be alert with thanksgiving is exactly this—to have eyes that recognize what God is doing even in the midst of difficulty.

Today, there may be doors closed before us. But like Paul, what we must ask for is not the door of our circumstances to be opened, but a door for the gospel. And to act wisely at that door, to make the most of the opportunity, is to faithfully carry out the small work that is before us today.
