Deuteronomy 9:25–10:5, Friday, October 23,

“Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin.” (Deuteronomy 9:27)
A rain came in last night — the kind that signals winter is on its way. In California, the first real rain means the wet season has begun. People are saying this year will be a heavy one, apparently due to El Niño. Standing there watching the dust get washed off everything, I found myself enjoying a feeling I hadn’t had in a while. Rain does something to the air, to the light, to the mood. It was good.
Daylight saving ends soon. The days will shorten quickly, and before long it will be Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then a new year. Everyone calls this the busy season. The heart races, even when the days themselves aren’t dramatically different from any other. Looking ahead at all of it, my hope is that we face it with a sense of what we’ve already come through — with gratitude for the past and genuine anticipation for what’s ahead.
Moses has been on the mountain for forty days. The people can’t wait any longer. They make a golden calf and bow down to it. Anxiety, when it runs deep enough, looks for something visible to hold onto. Something you can see and touch. But has visible ever actually quieted what’s underneath?
God sees what they have done and is angry. This is where so many people’s image of God gets set: the God who is furious. Moses intercedes. And what he appeals to in verse 27 is not the people’s merit — he has none to offer. He appeals to the covenant. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Look past this people’s stubbornness and sin. The basis for forgiveness is not the people’s behavior but God’s prior commitment.
What’s interesting about reading the whole of this story is how the emotional roles seem to shift across different passages. Sometimes God is the one ready to give up on Israel, and Moses is the one restraining him. At other moments, Moses is the one complaining — these people are impossible, he says, better to be done with them — and God is the one who steadies things and pours out the Spirit on the elders instead. It is not a tidy, consistent emotional arc. Which makes it, in some ways, feel more honest.
What holds it all together is not consistency of feeling but consistency of direction. Through all of it — God’s anger, Moses’s exhaustion, the people’s repeated failure — God keeps moving toward rescue. The tablets get broken, and God writes them again. That is the through-line. Whatever happens along the way, God’s intention to save does not waver.
That is the kind of God we are dealing with. Not one who gives up when the covenant gets broken. One who makes it again.
Reflection
Is there someone you are kneeling down in prayer for? And whatever has been broken — you don’t have to despair. God writes it again.
Intercessory Prayer
The Women’s Missionary Society’s Mission Praise Concert is tomorrow. It’s a long journey for many to get there — please pray that the time together is filled with grace.
The outdoor worship service is Sunday. A lot of careful preparation has gone into it, and there are plenty of things to wonder about. Please pray that the worship itself is the thing that stands out — and that everyone gets to breathe in this deepening autumn together.
