너희는 씻어라. 스스로 정결하게 하여라. 내가 보는 앞에서 너희의 악한 행실을 버려라. 악한 일을 그치고, 옳은 일을 하는 것을 배워라. 정의를 찾아라. 억압받는 사람을 도와주어라. 고아의 송사를 변호하여 주고 과부의 송사를 변론하여 주어라." (이사야 1:16-17)

사순절기가 주는 의미는 크지만 실제 삶에서는 크게 다르지 않습니다. 이런 평범함에 가끔 스스로를 자책하는 분도 계시겠지만, 이런 평범함 속에서 사순절을 깊이 묵상하려는 노력이 오히려 하나님께 우리의 삶을 돌이키기 위해 필요한 조건이라는 생각이 듭니다.

늘 일어나는 시간에, 삶에 베여있는 루틴속에서 사순절을 깊이 묵상하려는 자세는 오히려 언제 어디서나 그리스도인으로 살아가는데 필요한 노력이라고 생각합니다.

오늘 말씀에서 이사야는 하나님을 말씀을 이렇게 전합니다. “스스로 씻으며 스스로 깨끗하게 하라.” 이것은 마음의 문제이면서 동시에 삶의 문제입니다. 우리가 하나님 앞에 선다는 것은 단지 기도를 더 많이 하는 것이 아니라, 우리의 일상 속에서 악을 멈추고 선을 배우는 것입니다.

정의를 구하는 삶은 거창한 일에서 시작되지 않습니다. 아주 작고 사소한 실천에서 시작됩니다. 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 깨끗함은 성전 안에서만이 아니라 우리가 살아가는 삶의 자리, 우리가 발 딛고 서 있는 이 땅 위에서 드러납니다.

우리의 신앙은 우리가 살아가는 환경에 대한 책임으로 나타납니다. 내가 머무는 자리, 내가 지나가는 길, 내가 속한 공동체를 더 깨끗하고 안전하게 만드는 일, 그것이 곧 하나님 앞에서 선을 배우는 삶입니다.

오늘 우리가 세상을 향해 내딛는 작은 행동 하나가 하나님께서 말씀하신 “너희의 죄가 주홍 같을지라도 눈과 같이 희어질 것이라”는 회복의 약속을 향한 첫걸음이 될 수 있습니다.

“Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes. Cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, help the oppressed; defend the orphan, plead for the widow.” (Isaiah 1:16–17)

The meaning of the Lenten season is profound, yet our daily lives often feel no different from usual. Some may find themselves feeling discouraged by this sense of ordinariness. However, it may be that the very effort to reflect deeply on Lent within this ordinary rhythm of life is what is truly necessary for turning our lives back to God.

Choosing to meditate on the meaning of Lent within our usual routines—waking at the same time, moving through familiar patterns of daily life—is, in fact, the kind of spiritual discipline required to live as Christians wherever we are.

In today’s passage, Isaiah delivers God’s word in this way: “Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean.” This is both a matter of the heart and a matter of life. Standing before God is not simply about praying more, but about ceasing to do evil and learning to do good in the midst of our everyday lives.

A life that seeks justice does not begin with grand gestures. It begins with small and seemingly insignificant practices. The cleanliness that pleases God is revealed not only within the sanctuary, but also in the very places where we live—on the ground upon which we stand each day.

Our faith is expressed through our responsibility toward the environment in which we live. Making the places where we remain, the paths we walk, and the communities to which we belong cleaner and safer is itself part of learning to do good before God.

Today, even one small action we take toward the world can become the first step toward the promise of restoration God has spoken: “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
