Hebrews 12:1–3, Wednesday, April 8, 히브리서 12:1-3, 4월8일 수요일

하나님께서 옛날에는 예언자들을 통하여, 여러 번에 걸쳐 여러 가지 방법으로 우리 조상들에게 말씀하셨으나, (히 12:1)

어제 교회에 갔더니 풍경이 달라져 있었습니다. 가드너가 입구 도랑에 제멋대로 자라난 나무를 잘라내고, 파티오와 보이스카웃이 만든 밭의 풀도 깎아 놓았습니다. 마치 이발하고 나온 사람처럼 교회가 깨끗하고 밝아 보였습니다. 같은 건물, 같은 자리인데 무성했던 것들이 걷혀지니 햇빛이 들고 길이 환해졌습니다.

히브리서 기자는 "모든 무거운 것과 얽매이기 쉬운 죄를 벗어 버리라"고 말합니다. 교회 마당의 가지와 풀이 잘려 나가니 밝아진 것처럼, 우리 안에 무성하게 자란 것들이 있습니다. 걱정, 두려움, 습관처럼 굳어진 게으름, 체념. 이것들이 시야를 가리고 있는데 우리는 너무 익숙해져서 그게 가리고 있다는 사실조차 모릅니다. 가드너가 쳐내고 나서야 "아, 이렇게 밝았구나" 하고 알게 된 것처럼, 내려놓고 나서야 비로소 보이는 것들이 있습니다.

그런데 말씀은 거기서 멈추지 않습니다. 벗어 버리고 나서 어디를 향해 달리라는 것인지를 알려줍니다. "믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자." 쳐내는 것이 목적이 아니라, 바라봄이 목적입니다. 가드너가 나무를 자른 것은 교회를 밝게 하려는 목적이 있었던 것처럼, 우리가 무거운 것을 내려놓는 이유는 예수님을 더 선명하게 바라보기 위해서입니다.

예수님은 그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여 십자가를 참으셨습니다. 부끄러움을 개의치 않으셨습니다. 쉽지 않았을 겁니다. 쉽지 않습니다. 그런데 주님은 그 쉽지 않은 길을 끝까지 달리셨고, 보좌 우편에 앉으셨습니다. 우리가 피곤하여 낙심할 때, 말씀은 그분을 생각하라고 합니다. 내 힘으로 달리라는 것이 아니라, 먼저 달리신 분을 바라보라는 것입니다.

어제 깨끗해진 교회 마당을 보며, 오늘은 내 마음의 마당을 돌아봅니다. 무성하게 자라 주님을 가리고 있는 것은 무엇인지. 그것을 쳐내고, 다시 예수님을 바라보는 하루가 되기를 기도합니다.

내 신앙의 시야를 가리고 있는 무성한 가지는 무엇인가요?

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways.” (Hebrews 12:1)

Yesterday, when I went to church, the scenery had changed. The gardener had cut down the trees that had been growing wildly along the entrance ditch, and had also trimmed the grass around the patio and the garden made by the Boy Scouts. The church looked clean and bright, like someone who had just come back from a haircut. It was the same building, in the same place, but once the overgrown things were cleared away, sunlight came in and the path became bright.

The writer of Hebrews says, “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” Just as the church yard became brighter when the branches and grass were cut away, there are things within us that have grown thick and overgrown—worries, fears, laziness hardened into habit, resignation. These things block our vision, yet we become so accustomed to them that we don’t even realize they are covering our sight. Just as we only realized, “Ah, it was this bright,” after the gardener trimmed everything, there are things we can only see clearly after we let them go.

But the Word does not stop there. It tells us where to run after we have thrown these things off: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.” The goal is not the cutting away itself, but the looking. Just as the gardener cut the trees with the purpose of making the church brighter, the reason we lay aside what weighs us down is so that we may see Jesus more clearly.

Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before Him. He disregarded its shame. It could not have been easy. It is not easy. Yet the Lord ran that difficult path to the very end and sat down at the right hand of the throne. When we grow weary and lose heart, the Word tells us to consider Him. It does not tell us to run by our own strength, but to look to the One who has already run before us.

As I looked at the newly cleaned church yard yesterday, today I reflect on the yard of my own heart. What has grown thick and is covering the Lord? I pray that this would be a day to cut those things away and once again fix my eyes on Jesus.
