"Instead, you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.'" (James 4:15)

James raises two warnings in today's passage. Don't slander one another. And don't make plans as if you control tomorrow. On the surface they look like separate issues, but the root is the same: placing yourself in the seat that belongs to God.

Verse 11: Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. The connection between judging a neighbor and judging the law sounds a little unusual at first. But when you remember that the heart of the law is love for your neighbor, it makes sense. To tear someone down is to place yourself above the law that commands love — to become a judge of the law rather than a keeper of it.

Verse 12 cuts to the center: But you — who are you to judge your neighbor? There is one Lawgiver and Judge. The one who can save and destroy. That seat is not ours to occupy.

What James is describing sounds familiar. In this century as well, one of the ways the adversary works is through churches attacking churches, believers going after believers. A congregation that positions itself as purer and more faithful than others — using that posture to draw people away from existing church communities rather than to reach those who are not yet part of any — reveals something underneath the righteousness: not zeal for the gospel, but a kind of spiritual competitiveness. James seems to have seen exactly this pattern in his own context.

The setting of James's letter matters here. The return of Jesus was taking longer than the early church expected. Some people had drawn the conclusion that since Jesus was coming back soon, there was no point in working hard — and they began to idle inside the community while presenting themselves as the truly faithful ones. Meanwhile, those who kept working were dismissed. James responds to this with unusual directness.

Then comes the second warning in verse 13. Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' The problem is not the planning. The problem is that God is nowhere in the plan. The assumption is total self-sufficiency, complete personal control. In a community that had made so much of the coming return of Jesus, they had somehow managed to forget that God is actually at work in the present.

Verse 14 is bracing: You do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Mist. Here for a moment in the morning, gone. That is our life. It is a hard thing to hear — and it is true.

This image landed differently for me recently. Talking with the young adults yesterday, I found myself thinking: they are the ones who will carry this forward now. I have thought of myself as still young, still at the center — and I am starting to realize that stepping back is itself part of faithfulness.

Verse 15 offers the alternative posture: If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that. This is the language of a Christian. Not: stop making plans. But: put the Lord's will before the plan. Before the decision, before the execution, the confession comes first — if the Lord permits.

Both warnings come from the same place. Judging a neighbor and planning without God are both forms of spiritual pride — acting as though you know everything, as though God speaks only to you, as though the seat of judgment and the seat of control are yours by right. James calls it what it is.

Reflection

The seat of judgment and the seat of control both belong to God. They are not ours to occupy.

Intercessory Prayer

  1. The Mission Dinner is this Saturday at 5 PM, and the choir seminar begins Saturday morning at 10 AM.

  2. This Sunday we gather in Sokwae — small groups of four to five people, which is exactly the right size. Yesterday with the young adults, that same group size felt just right. The point of Sokwae is not to stay at ten — it is for ten to become two groups of five, and for those groups to keep multiplying. Please make the effort to gather and bring your whole heart to it.
