"예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. '와서, 아침을 먹어라.'" (요한복음 21:12)

실패한 밤이 있습니다. 열심히 했는데 아무것도 없는 밤. 베드로와 제자들이 딱 그랬습니다. 밤새 그물을 던졌는데 아무것도 없었습니다. 어부 출신들이, 자기가 제일 잘 안다는 바다에서, 한 마리도 못 잡은 것입니다. 이런 밤이 얼마나 긴지는 경험해본 사람은 압니다. 노력이 결과로 이어지지 않을 때의 그 공허함.

부활하신 예수님이 나타나신 곳이 바로 그 자리입니다. 화려한 성전도 아니고, 준비된 예배 자리도 아닙니다. 아무것도 건지지 못한 새벽 바닷가입니다. 그리고 하시는 말씀이 "그물을 배 오른편에 던지라"입니다. 별 기대 없이 던졌을 것입니다. 그런데 그물이 올라오지 않습니다. 물고기가 너무 많아서.

요한이 먼저 알아봅니다. "주님이시다." 그 말에 베드로는 겉옷을 두르고 바다로 뛰어듭니다. 좀 웃깁니다. 뛰어들려면 옷을 벗어야 빠른데, 겉옷을 두르고 뛰어들다니. 그런데 이게 베드로입니다. 논리보다 먼저 몸이 움직이는 사람. 예수님이 거기 계신다는 말 하나에, 그냥 뛰어드는 사람. 실패한 밤을 보낸 사람이, 그래도 뛰어드는 사람.

예수님은 이미 숯불을 피워놓고 생선과 떡을 준비해 두셨습니다. "와서 조반을 먹으라." 따지지 않으십니다. 어디 있었냐고, 왜 이제야 왔냐고, 예수님을 부인하지 않았냐고. 그냥 밥 먹으라고 하십니다. 부활하신 주님의 첫 번째 관심이 제자들의 아침밥이었다는 것이 오래 마음에 남습니다.

요즘 밤새 그물을 던지는 것 같은 시간을 보내는 분들이 있을 것 같습니다. 열심히 했는데 손에 잡히는 것이 없는 시간들. 그 자리에 예수님이 오십니다. 그리고 밥 먹으라고 하십니다. 거창한 말씀이 아니라, 그냥 먹으라고. 지금 그것으로 충분합니다.

누가 우리를 보고 먹는것에만 집중한다고 핀잔을 주면, 우리가 잘하고 있다는 뜻입니다. 교회의 다른 이름은 밥상공동체입니다.

실패한 새벽 바닷가에도, 주님은 이미 불을 피워놓고 기다리십니다.

중보기도

1. 텃밭을 가꾸기 위해 매일 빌과 캔이 짬을 내서 노력합니다. 이번주에는 밭에 물을 자동으로 주는 시스템을 만든다고 어제 흥분해서 제 사무실에 찾아왔습니다. 뭔가 집중해야 열매는 생기는 것 같습니다.

2. 오늘 청년들 수요모임이 있습니다. 곧 기말이고 집으로 돌아가는 아이들이 토요일에 교회애서 락인을 합니다. 이름은 락인이지만, 밤을 새울건 아닙니다. 아이들과 내년 사역을 준비하고 더불어 트리니티 채플에 주일예배를 시작하려고 합니다. 위해서 기도해주세요

"Jesus said to them, 'Come and have breakfast.'" (John 21:12)

There are nights of failure. Nights where you gave everything and came back with nothing. That was exactly where Peter and the disciples found themselves. They had been casting nets all night — experienced fishermen, on the very sea they knew best — and caught nothing. Anyone who has lived through a night like that knows how long it feels. The emptiness of effort that leads nowhere.

And that is precisely where the risen Jesus appears. Not in a grand temple. Not in a prepared place of worship. On a shoreline at dawn, where nothing had been caught. His instruction is simple: cast the net on the right side of the boat. They probably didn't expect much. But the net won't come up. Too many fish.

John is the first to recognize him. It is the Lord. And at those words, Peter wraps his outer garment around himself and throws himself into the sea. It's a little funny, if you think about it — you'd think he'd take the coat off to swim faster. But that's Peter. The kind of person whose body moves before his mind does. The kind of person who, at the single word that Jesus is there, just jumps. A man who spent the night in failure — and jumps anyway.

Jesus has already prepared a charcoal fire, with fish and bread laid out. Come and have breakfast. No questions asked. No where have you been, why did it take you so long, didn't you deny me three times? Just — eat. It stays with me, that the risen Lord's first concern was his disciples' breakfast.

There are probably people right now who feel like they've been casting nets all night. Seasons of effort with nothing to show for it. Jesus comes to that exact place. And he says, eat. Not grand words. Just — eat. For now, that is enough.

If someone ever criticizes us for being too focused on food and meals together, it probably means we're doing something right. Another name for the church is a table community — a people who eat together.

Reflection

Even on the shoreline of a failed night, the Lord has already lit the fire and is waiting.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Bill and Ken have been showing up every day to tend the garden, finding whatever time they can. Yesterday, Ken came rushing into my office, excited about building an automatic watering system for the beds. It seems like fruit only comes when something has your whole attention. Please pray for the ministry efforts being planted at Yeolin Church.

2. The young adults have their Wednesday gathering today. With finals approaching and many heading home soon, they'll be having a lock-in at the church on Saturday — the name says "lock-in," but they won't actually be staying up all night. We'll be preparing for next year's ministry together and exploring the possibility of starting a Sunday service at Trinity Chapel. Please keep them in your prayers.
