"너희가 내 말에 거하면 참으로 내 제자가 되고 진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라" (요 8:32, 새번역)

"진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라." 너무 많이 들어서 오히려 잘 안 들리는 말이 있습니다. 이 구절이 그렇습니다. 현판에도 새겨지고, 졸업식 축사에도 등장하고, 어디선가 한 번쯤은 들어본 말. 그런데 오늘 이 말이 나온 맥락을 보니, 생각보다 훨씬 구체적인 이야기였습니다.

예수님이 말씀하십니다. "내 말에 거하면 참으로 내 제자가 되고, 진리를 알게 될 것이다." 그러자 유대인들이 발끈합니다. "우리는 아브라함의 자손이라 남의 종이 된 적이 없거늘, 어찌하여 자유롭게 되리라 하느냐." 우리가 언제 종이었냐는 것입니다. 자존심이 상한 겁니다.

그런데 이게 좀 이상합니다. 이스라엘의 역사를 조금만 알면 이 말이 얼마나 어색한지 바로 보입니다. 이집트에서 노예였습니다. 바벨론에 포로로 잡혀갔습니다. 지금 이 순간에도 로마의 지배 아래 살고 있습니다. 그런데 종이 된 적이 없다고 합니다.

예수님은 그 자존심을 건드리지 않으십니다. 대신 다른 종류의 종을 이야기하십니다. "죄를 범하는 자마다 죄의 종이라." 정치적 종속이 아니라, 죄에 묶인 것을 말씀하시는 겁니다. 나라가 독립해도, 경제적으로 풍요로워도, 지위가 높아져도 여전히 자유롭지 않을 수 있다는 것입니다. 죄의 패턴에서 벗어나지 못하는 자유 없음. 같은 후회를 반복하고, 같은 곳에서 넘어지고, 하지 말아야 한다는 걸 알면서도 하게 되는 그것.

그러면서 예수님은 말씀하십니다. "아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면 너희가 참으로 자유로우리라." 진리가 자유케 한다는 말은 정보가 많아지면 자유로워진다는 말이 아닙니다. 아는 것이 많아지면 해방된다는 말이 아닙니다. 아들 안에 거하는 것, 예수님의 말씀 안에 머무는 것이 자유의 출발이라는 것입니다.

요즘 자유라는 말이 참 많이 쓰입니다. 이런저런 자유, 저런저런 해방. 그런데 가만히 보면 자유를 외치는 사람들이 꼭 자유로워 보이지는 않습니다. 뭔가에 묶여서 싸우고 있는 것 같습니다. 저도 마찬가지입니다. 자유롭다고 생각하는 순간에도 어딘가에 매여 있습니다. 두려움이든, 인정받고 싶은 욕구든, 익숙한 습관이든.

예수님의 말씀 안에 거하는 것. 그게 거창한 것이 아닌 것 같습니다. 오늘 이 말씀 앞에 잠깐 머무는 것. 그것이 자유의 시작일 수 있습니다.

자유는 쟁취하는 것이 아니라, 말씀 안에 거할 때 주어지는 것입니다.

"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32)

The truth will set you free. There are phrases so familiar they stop landing. This is one of them. Carved into building facades, quoted at graduation ceremonies, heard somewhere so many times it barely registers anymore. But reading it in context today, it turned out to be a much more specific conversation than I had remembered.

Jesus says: If you hold to my teaching, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth. The Jewish listeners bristle immediately. We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves to anyone. How can you say we will be set free? Never been slaves. Their pride is stung.

Which is a little hard to follow, if you know any Israeli history at all. Slaves in Egypt. Exiles in Babylon. And at this very moment, living under Roman occupation. Never been slaves — either they can't see the reality in front of them, or they simply don't want to.

Jesus doesn't push back on the pride. He redirects to a different kind of slavery altogether. Everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Not political subjugation — bondage to a pattern. A country can be independent, a person can be wealthy, a career can be successful — and still not be free. The freedom that can't be found: the same regrets on repeat, falling in the same place again and again, doing the very thing you told yourself you wouldn't do.

And then: If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. The truth setting you free is not about accumulating more information. It is not about becoming more educated or more enlightened. It begins with remaining in the Son — staying inside the words of Jesus. That is where freedom starts.

The word freedom gets used a lot these days. All kinds of freedom, all kinds of liberation. But looking closely, the people loudest about freedom don't always seem particularly free. They seem to be fighting something — bound to it, actually. I'm no different. Even in the moments I think I'm free, something has a hold on me. Fear, maybe. The need to be recognized. A habit I can't quite shake.

Staying in the words of Jesus. It doesn't have to be a grand thing. Just pausing here, in front of this passage, for a few minutes this morning. That might be where freedom begins.

Reflection

Freedom is not something we win. It is something given to us when we remain in the Word.
