주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 여리고와 그 왕과 용사들을 너의 손에 붙인다.(여호수아 6:2)

전쟁에 있어서 전략과 전술은 매우 중요합니다. 스포츠 경기에서도 감독이 내리는 전술로 인해 팀의 판도가 바귀는 것을 볼때가 있습니다. 그래서 경기후에 감독의 지략이 뛰어났다는 평을 내리기도 하고, 전술이 형편없었다는 이야기도 합니다. 그래서 축구나 농구, 풋볼등은 감독의 역량이 크게 작용하는 다른말로 전술과 전략이 팀을 승리로 이끄는데 크게 여향을 미치면서 높은 연봉으로 감독을 영입하는 것을 보게됩니다.

선수를 분석해서 필요한곳에 배치하고 상대의 전략을 미리 알고서 대처하는 능력으로 통해 감독의 능력을 평가하는 것이니 어찌보면 간단해보이지만, 분석과 경험 그리고 선수를 대하는 날카로운 판단이 팀 승리를 좌지우지 할 수 있습니다.

이런 전술과 전략을 동원해서 이스라엘도 가나안땅에 정탐꾼을 보내고 미리 어디로 가야할지 어느 성부터 가야할지 나름대로 전술을 짜고 그 전략에 맞춰서 군대를 동원할 것인지를 계획했을 것입니다. 일생 일대의 전쟁을 준비하는 것인만큼 치밀하게 작전을 준비해야했을 것입니다.

그런데 하나님이 난공불락처럼 느껴지는 여리고성을 하루에 한번씩 침묵속에 한바뀌씩 성둘레를 돌라고 말씀하십니다. "여기고성을 넘겨주겠다!"이 말씀에 의지해서 다른것하지 말고 침묵속에서 법궤를 들고 성둘레를 하루에 한바뀌씩! 돌아라!

치밀하게 계획을 세워도 모자른데 엉뚱한 계획에 이스라엘은 어떻게 합니까? 그대로 순종합니다. 한바뀌 돌고 숙소로 돌아왔을 텐데 하나님은 40년광야도 물론이고, 이런 엉뚱한 방법으로 이스라엘이 하나님이 하라는대로 그대로 따라합니다.

가나안 정복, 여리고성을 무너뜨리는 것보다 하나님은 이스라엘을 계속해서 순종의 방향으로 몰아붙이시는 것 같습니다. "말씀을 순종하고 실천하는 믿음의 행진"은 상황자체는 좋은 전략도 아니고 날카로운 전술도 아닙니다. 전쟁을 잘 아는 사람이 보면 소위 말도 안되는 전술이라고 생각했을 것입니다.

자신의 생각과 지혜를 넘어서 하나님의 계획을 따라가는 것을 가르치시는 것처럼 이스라엘은 그렇게해서 가나안땅에 정착하기 시작합니다.

우리도 좋은 생각과 아이디어 번뜩이는 계획을 통해 뭔가를 이루어내려는데 관심이 큽니다. 거기서 사람의 능력을 저울질하고, 사람의 몸값을 결정합니다. 기왕이면 똑똑해보이고 싶어하고 실력있고 싶어합니다. 그런데 우리들은 하나님앞에 얼마나 신실한가를 보는 공동체에서 생활합니다. 어느 목사님이 교인들이 대부분 박사다 엔지니어다 의사다 뭐 이런걸로. 교회를 자랑합니다. 법조인 200명이 넘는다는 것을 공개적으로 자랑하는데 이 자랑의 숨은 뜻은 사람의 능력으로 저울질하는 것을 여전히 따르고 하나님앞에 신실함에는 관심이 없다는 것을 이야기하는 것입니다.

믿음의 사람!, 신실한 사람! 하나님께 순종하는 사람을 자랑하는 교회가 여리고성을 돌수 있는 믿음을 가지는 것입니다.

우리들이 자랑할것 많습니다. 재산, 자녀, 지식, 직업, 승진등 그런데 하나님앞에 우리는 믿음, 신실함을 드러내는 것에 마음을 다해야 한다는 사실을 잊지 말아야 합니다.

“The Lord said to Joshua, ‘I am delivering Jericho, its king, and its mighty warriors into your hands.’ (Joshua 6:2)”

In any battle, strategy and tactics are extremely important. Even in sports, we often see how a coach’s decisions can completely change the direction of a game. After a match, people say the coach’s tactics were brilliant—or sometimes criticize that the strategy was poor. In soccer, basketball, and football, a coach’s ability often determines victory or defeat. Because of this, teams invest heavily in hiring coaches with high salaries who can lead them with strong strategies.

A coach studies the players carefully, places them where they are most effective, and prepares for the opponent’s tactics in advance. It may look simple, but in reality, a coach’s analysis, experience, and sharp judgment can make or break a team.

The Israelites, too, must have sent spies into Canaan to analyze the land—where to go first, which city to attack, and how to mobilize the army based on their strategy. It was a once-in-a-lifetime military campaign, so they would have prepared their war plans very thoroughly.

But then God commands something completely unexpected:for the Israelites to walk around the strongly fortified city of Jericho once a day in complete silence.“Because I will give this city into your hands,” God says.No other tactics—just carry the Ark of the Covenant and silently march once around the city each day!

Even with all their careful planning, God gives them a strategy that seems almost absurd. And how do the Israelites respond? They obey.They walk around the city once, return to their camp, and do the same again the next day. God, who had already shaped them in the 40 years of the wilderness, continues forming them through this unusual strategy—a strategy that makes no sense to human reasoning.

In conquering Canaan and bringing down Jericho, God seems more concerned with pushing Israel toward obedience than merely giving them military victory.The march of faith—listening to God and practicing His word—was not a smart strategy or a sharp tactical plan. Anyone skilled in war would have laughed at it.

But God was teaching Israel to rely not on their wisdom or skill but on His plan. And through obedience, Israel began to take possession of the land of Canaan.

We, too, often try to accomplish things through good ideas, clever plans, and impressive strategies. We measure people by their abilities, judge their worth, and aim to appear intelligent or competent. One pastor proudly shared that his congregation was full of PhDs, engineers, doctors, and lawyers—over 200 legal professionals, he bragged. But what he was really saying was that they still valued people by human standards and had little interest in faithfulness before God.

A church that boasts not in worldly accomplishments, but in faith, in faithfulness, and in obedience to God—that is the kind of church that can walk around Jericho with confidence.

We all have many things we could boast about—our wealth, children, knowledge, careers, promotions. But before God, we must never forget that what truly matters is faith and faithfulness.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Please pray for tonight’s Young Adult Wednesday Worship and the Adult Wednesday Bible Study.

2. Pray for our Children’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Young Adult Ministry, as well as for all the pastors and leaders serving in these departments. Especially lift up Kevin, our Youth Ministry director—that he may serve with joy and that our youth may grow in happiness and faith.

3. This past Sunday, Han Joong-geum Kownsanim and Jung Soo-bong Kownsanim completed the Berkeley Half Marathon. They are over 100 years old—truly remarkable! Please continue to pray for our Somang (Senior) Ministry as well.
