"고라신아, 너에게 화가 있다. 벳새다야, 너에게 화가 있다. 너희 마을들에서 행한 기적들을 두로와 시돈에서 행했더라면, 그들은 벌써 굵은 베 옷을 입고, 재를 쓰고서, 회개하였을 것이다." (마 11:21, 새번역)

오늘 본문은 예수님의 말씀 중에 가장 강한 어조에 속합니다. "그 때에 예수께서는, 자기가 기적을 많이 행한 마을들이 회개하지 않으므로, 꾸짖기 시작하셨다." 고라신, 벳새다, 가버나움. 낯선 곳이 아닙니다. 예수님이 가장 많이 사역하신 곳들입니다. 기적이 일어난 곳들입니다. 그런데 예수님이 이 도시들을 향해 화가 있다고 하십니다.

예수님이 사역을 가장 많이 하신 곳에서 가장 강한 책망이 나온다는 것입니다. 기적을 가장 많이 본 사람들이 회개하지 않았다는 것입니다. 이것이 이상하게 느껴질 수 있습니다. 기적을 보면 믿게 되지 않을까요. 그런데 현실은 그렇지 않았습니다. 많이 봤다고 더 믿게 되는 것이 아니라는 것입니다.

예수님이 비교를 하십니다. "너희 마을들에서 행한 기적들을 두로와 시돈에서 행했더라면, 그들은 벌써 굵은 베 옷을 입고, 재를 쓰고서, 회개하였을 것이다." 두로와 시돈은 이방 도시들입니다. 이스라엘이 멸시하던 곳들입니다. 그 도시들에서 같은 기적이 일어났다면 진작에 회개했을 것이라고 하십니다. 그런데 하나님의 백성이라고 자부하는 도시들은 그 많은 것을 보고도 돌아서지 않았다는 것입니다.

가버나움에 대한 말씀이 더 강합니다. "너 가버나움아, 네가 하늘에까지 치솟을 셈이냐? 지옥에까지 떨어질 것이다. 너 가버나움에서 행한 기적들을 소돔에서 행했더라면, 그는 오늘까지 남아 있을 것이다." 가버나움은 예수님의 사역 본부 같은 곳이었습니다. 가장 가까이에서 예수님을 본 도시입니다. 그런데 그 가까움이 오히려 더 큰 책임이 되었다는 것입니다. 많이 받은 곳에 더 많은 것이 요구된다는 것입니다.

문득 본문을 읽으면서, 나는 얼마나 많은 것을 받았는가. 말씀을 듣고, 예배를 드리고, 공동체 안에서 살아가는 것. 이 모든 것이 은혜라는 생각이 들었습니다. 그런데 많이 받은 것이 자동으로 변화로 이어지지 않는다는 것을 오늘 본문이 말합니다. 받은 것이 많을수록 그 받은 것에 어떻게 반응하느냐가 더 중요한것 같습니다.

책망을 목적으로 이렇게 말씀하셨을까? 예수님이 이렇게 꾸짖은 이유는 그 도시들을 포기하셨기 때문이 아닙니다. 아직 돌아올 수 있기 때문입니다. 회개의 기회가 있기 때문입니다. 책망은 포기가 아니라, 마지막 초대입니다.

오늘 새로운 상반기를 시작하는 첫날입니다. 올해의 절반이 지나갔습니다. 정신없이 지난 시간의 흔적을 보면, 많은 것을 받았습니다. 그 받은 것에 어떻게 반응하며 살았는지를 조용히 돌아봅니다. 회개가 필요한 자리가 있다면, 오늘이 바로 그렇게 시작하는 첫날입니다.

묵상

많이 받은 것이 자동으로 변화를 만들지 않습니다. 받은 것에 어떻게 반응하느냐가 더 중요합니다.

"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes." (Matthew 11:21)

Today's passage carries some of the sharpest words Jesus ever spoke. At that time Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. Chorazin, Bethsaida, Capernaum — none of these are unfamiliar names. These were the towns where Jesus did most of his ministry. Where miracles happened. And yet Jesus speaks words of judgment over them.

This gives me pause. The strongest rebuke comes to the places where the most ministry happened. The people who witnessed the most miracles were the ones who did not repent. It seems counterintuitive — surely seeing miracles would lead to belief? But the reality was different. Seeing more did not produce more faith.

Jesus makes a comparison. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. Tyre and Sidon were Gentile cities — places Israel looked down on. Yet Jesus says those cities would have repented immediately if they had seen what Chorazin and Bethsaida saw. The towns that considered themselves God's people, having witnessed so much, still did not turn.

The words about Capernaum are even stronger. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. Capernaum was essentially Jesus' ministry headquarters — the town that saw him up close more than any other. But that closeness became a greater responsibility. More given means more required.

Reading this, I found myself asking — how much have I received? Hearing the Word,

worshiping, living inside a community of faith. All of it is grace. And yet today's passage says that receiving much does not automatically produce change. The more we have been given, the more it matters how we respond to what we have received.

Was rebuke the goal? I don't think so. Jesus doesn't speak this sharply because he has given up on these towns. He speaks this way because there is still time to return. Because repentance is still possible. Rebuke is not abandonment — it is a final invitation.

Today is the first day of the second half of the year. The first six months have gone by in a blur. Looking back at the traces of that time, there is much that was received. Today I want to sit quietly and ask how I have been responding to what I've been given. If there is a place where repentance is needed, today — the first day of a new beginning — is exactly the right day to start.

Reflection

Receiving much does not automatically produce change. What matters is how we respond to what we have received.
