하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻을 따라 사는 사람이 곧 내 형제요 자매요 어머니이다.”(마12:50)

샌디에고 날씨는 좋습니다. 첫날은 더워서 겉옷을 벋게하더니 오늘은 비가 오면서 움츠려들게 하네요. 올해 Growing Church Conference는 보스터, 시카고, 밀워키 그리고 엘에이, 샌디에고, 시애틀 샌프란시스코, 데번와 콜로라도, 애리조나에서 목회하는 목사님들이 모였습니다. 46명의 목회자와 사모님이 참석했고, 주제는 "교회성장을 어떻게 할 것인가?"라는 다소 진부한 주제를 가지고 모였습니다.

각자의 사역의 고충과 마음을 나누는 시간속에서 깊은 위로를 느끼는 분들도 계시고, 참신한 내용으로 목회에 대한 실제적 자극을 주시는 분들도 있습니다. 친구가 부목사로 사역하는 First United Methodist Church에서 장소를 제공하고 근처에 호텔에서 프로그램을 진행하고 있습니다.

멀찍이서 컨퍼런스가 진행되는 모습에서 개인적으로 이번에는 연령이 고정되어 있고, 그대로 고령화되고 있다는 것을 느꼈습니다. 시간은 가고, 우리들이 함께 마음을 나누었던 분들도 한분 두분 은퇴하는 현실속에 젊은 사역자들이 새로 유입되지 않는 현실에 교회성장은 곧 미래에 대한 준비라는 생각이 들었습니다.

오늘 본문에서 서기관과 바리새인들은 예수님께 “표적을 보여 달라”고 요구합니다. 이미 수많은 기적과 치유를 보았음에도, 그들은 여전히 더 확실한 증거를 원합니다. 믿기 위해서가 아니라, 판단하기 위해서입니다.

예수님은 그들에게 요나의 표적을 말씀하십니다. 요나가 물고기 뱃속에서 삼일을 있었던 것처럼, 인자도 땅 속에 삼일을 있을 것이라고 하십니다. 참된 표적은 눈에 보이는 기적이 아니라, 십자가와 부활이라는 구원의 사건을 이야기하신 것입니다. 이것을 알아챌리 없지만, 예수님은 말씀하십니다.

우리도 종종 하나님께 표적을 구합니다.“확실하게 보여 주시면 믿겠습니다.”“분명한 응답이 있으면 순종하겠습니다.” 요즘 제가 구하는 표적은 하나님! 열린교회에 일꾼을 세워주시고, 영어사역을 함께 동역하는 사역자를 세워주시옵소서!라는 기도제목을 올리고 있습니다.

그런데 문득 이번 컨퍼런스를 준비하고 진행하면서, 이미 드러난 기적과 축복속에 살고 있는데 그것을 누리지 못하고 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 십자가와 부활! 우리들에게는 진부한 내용으로 가까이에 있지만, 이것이면 충분한다는 만족과 감사에 인색한것 같습니다.

본문 후반부에서 예수님은 더 놀라운 선언을 하십니다. 누가 예수님의 가족인가? 혈연이 아니라, 아버지의 뜻을 행하는 자입니다. 하나님의 뜻에 순종하는 삶 —그 삶이 예수님과 가장 가까운 관계를 맺는 길입니다.

아침을 시작하며 우리는 묻습니다. 나는 표적을 기다리는 사람인가,아니면 이미 주신 말씀에 순종하는 사람인가? 오늘도 하나님의 뜻을 행함으로예수님의 참된 가족으로 살아가기를 소망합니다.

“Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:50)

The weather in San Diego has been beautiful. On the first day it was so warm that we had to take off our jackets, but today the rain has made us draw them close again.

This year’s Growing Church Conference has gathered pastors serving in Boston, Chicago, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Colorado, and Arizona. A total of 46 pastors and their spouses are attending. The theme—“How Can the Church Grow?”—may sound somewhat familiar, even predictable.

Yet as we share the struggles and burdens of our ministries, some find deep comfort, while others offer fresh and practical insights that stimulate and challenge us. A friend who serves as an associate pastor at First United Methodist Church graciously provided the venue, and we are holding the program at a nearby hotel.

Watching the conference from a slight distance, I personally sensed something significant this time. The age range seems fixed—and steadily aging. Time moves on. Those with whom we once shared passion and vision are retiring one by one. Meanwhile, fewer young pastors are entering ministry. It made me realize that church growth is ultimately about preparing for the future.

In today’s Scripture, the scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” Although they had already witnessed countless miracles and healings, they still demanded clearer proof—not in order to believe, but in order to judge.

Jesus responds by speaking of the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days, so the Son of Man would be in the heart of the earth for three days. The true sign is not a visible miracle, but the saving event of the cross and the resurrection. Though they could not fully grasp it, Jesus plainly declared it.

We, too, often ask God for a sign.“If You clearly show me, I will believe.”“If You give me a definite answer, I will obey.”

These days, the sign I find myself asking for is this:“Lord, raise up workers for Yeolin Church. Send co-laborers for the English ministry.”

Yet as I prepared and led this conference, I suddenly realized something: we are already living in the midst of revealed miracles and blessings, but we fail to fully enjoy them. The cross and the resurrection—so close to us, so familiar, perhaps even ordinary—are more than enough. And yet we are often stingy in our gratitude and satisfaction with what has already been given.

In the latter part of the passage, Jesus makes an even more astonishing declaration: Who is His family? Not those bound by blood, but those who do the will of the Father. A life of obedience to God’s will—that is the closest relationship one can have with Jesus.

As we begin this morning, we ask ourselves:Am I someone waiting for a sign,or someone obeying the Word already given?

Today, may we live as the true family of Jesus by doing the will of our Father in heaven.
