Matthew 18:1–5, September 23,

"Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:4)
The disciples come to Jesus with a question: Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? It sounds like an innocent inquiry. But the question already contains a competition. Who ranks highest? Who gets the top position? The people who had followed Jesus most closely were asking this — which is both surprising and, if we are honest, entirely recognizable. It is our question too.
Jesus answers in an unusual way. Before he says anything, he acts. He calls a child over and places the child in the middle of the group. He makes it visible first. Then he speaks: Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Change. Turn around. The direction you are currently moving is wrong. Stop asking who is greatest and turn toward something that looks like a child.
What does it mean to become like a child? To become naive? To return to a state of knowing nothing? Verse 4 clarifies: whoever takes the lowly position of this child. The key is lowliness. In the society of that time, children had no status at all. No rights, no voice, no standing. They could not elevate themselves. That is the posture Jesus is pointing to.
It is a complete inversion of what the world expects. We are shaped by competition — to appear larger, to be recognized, to rise. And Jesus says the logic of the kingdom runs the opposite direction. To go lower is to become greater.
Verse 5 goes one step further. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. How you treat the smallest and most overlooked person is how you treat Jesus. That is the measure.
There is a great deal packed into this short passage. A life oriented toward display, visibility, elevation, and the gathering of influence finds it genuinely difficult to meet Jesus. The call is not to drag yourself into the dirt — it is about direction. Where are your eyes pointing? What draws your attention? The disciples, even after all that time with Jesus, still wanted to be the greatest. The corrective is not self-degradation. It is learning to look in a different direction — toward the ones society overlooks, toward the child standing in the middle of the room.
And it is worth asking today: who are the smallest ones in this time and this place?
Reflection
Greatness in the kingdom is measured by lowliness. How you treat the smallest person reveals your actual size — and in this age, think about who the smallest ones actually are.
