"Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me." (Matthew 26:10)
The way Jesus and the disciples saw what the woman did couldn't have been more different. Waste versus something beautiful — two people looking at the same act and arriving at opposite conclusions. How does that happen? When your attention is fixed in one direction, everything else becomes peripheral. The disciples had their eyes on resources and efficiency. What fell outside that frame didn't register as meaningful. Most of us fall into this pattern without realizing it, and most of us find the gap between perspectives uncomfortable when it becomes visible.
Most committees at the Annual Conference level are volunteer positions. People give their time to gather, deliberate, and make decisions — but the finer details of administration, especially around property and legal documentation, don't always get the careful attention they need. The assumption is that the paid staff will take those decisions and turn them into proper paperwork. When that doesn't happen — whether from being overwhelmed, or simply not prioritizing it — the problems don't show up immediately. They surface later, compounded.
Something felt off when I first moved into the parsonage. That same sense is now connected to administrative errors the escrow company flagged in the building sale process. Somewhere along the way, someone handled things lightly — or didn't handle them at all. And when there were requests that should have been addressed, whether they got taken seriously seemed to depend on who was asking. The response was either a brush-off or a stock reply that didn't engage with the actual issue.
The result is that I now need to track down four committee members and get their signatures in person. I'll start tomorrow, one by one, and hope that getting through all of them closes this out. Having to clean up what someone else left undone through carelessness or avoidance — and doing it again — carries a low-grade frustration that's hard to shake. This kind of thing tends to repeat itself.
The woman with the alabaster jar is usually brought out when we talk about devotion and sacrifice. But what we looked at today is the difference in perspective — where does it start, and what does it reveal? Some people give everything to what they are doing. Others just occupy the space. When a degree of dismissiveness enters the mix, the community starts to feel the strain. That is reason enough to keep examining the direction of our own eyes and the shape of our own priorities. The reason this unnamed woman is still remembered may be exactly that — in the face of every competing opinion and dismissive voice, she had decided what mattered most, and she put everything into it.
Reflection
Putting your life into something means moving with everything you have in one direction, and letting that define how you live.
Intercessory Prayer
Sister Eunyoung Lee's father-in-law has passed away and gone to be with the Lord. Please extend your condolences and hold the family in prayer. Sister Seula's surgery has been delayed for various reasons — please keep her in prayer as well.
This Sunday passes, and September begins — a busy season. Please pray for the ministries and staff of Yeolin Church. Please also pray for the incoming pastor from Korea — the immigration paperwork has now been officially filed, and we are praying for a smooth journey ahead.
