“그러므로 내 말을 듣고 그대로 행하는 사람은, 반석 위에다 자기 집을 지은, 슬기로운 사람과 같다고 할 것이다. (마태복음 7:24)

마태복음 7장의 마지막 부분은 예수님께서 산상수훈을 마무리하시며 우리에게 주시는 결단의 말씀입니다. 주님께서는 이 말씀을 통해 단순한 이해나 감동을 요구하시지 않으시고, 어떤 삶의 길을 선택하며 살아갈 것인지를 물으십니다. 이 말씀 앞에서 우리는 듣는 자로 머무는 것이 아니라, 응답하며 살아가야 할 존재로 서게 됩니다.

예수님께서는 먼저 좁은 문과 넓은 문을 대비하여 말씀하십니다. 넓은 문은 편해 보이고 많은 사람들이 선택하는 길이지만, 그 끝은 생명으로 이어지지 않는다고 분명히 경고하십니다. 반대로 좁은 문은 불편하고 때로는 외로워 보이지만, 그 길이 생명으로 인도하는 길임을 주님께서는 분명히 말씀하십니다. 신앙은 다수가 선택하는 길이 아니라, 주님께서 가리키시는 방향을 따르는 결단에서 시작됩니다.

이어 주님께서는 나무와 열매의 비유를 통해 참된 신앙의 모습을 가르쳐 주십니다. 겉모습이 아무리 신앙적으로 보이고 말이 그럴듯해 보여도, 삶의 열매가 없다면 그것은 참된 신앙이라 할 수 없습니다. 신앙은 입술의 고백에 머무르지 않고, 삶의 태도와 선택, 그리고 관계 속에서 맺히는 열매로 드러나야 합니다.

또한 예수님께서는 “주님, 주님”이라고 부르는 고백만으로는 충분하지 않다고 말씀하십니다. 하나님의 뜻을 안다고 말하는 것과, 그 뜻을 실제 삶 속에서 행하는 것 사이에는 분명한 간격이 존재합니다. 이 말씀은 신앙의 언어에 익숙해진 우리에게 불편하게 들릴 수 있으나, 동시에 우리를 깨어 있게 하는 매우 중요한 경고의 말씀입니다.

마지막으로 예수님께서는 반석 위에 집을 지은 사람과 모래 위에 집을 지은 사람의 비유로 말씀을 맺으십니다. 두 집은 평상시에는 큰 차이가 없어 보이지만, 비가 내리고 바람이 불며 홍수가 밀려올 때 그 기초가 무엇이었는지가 분명히 드러납니다. 인생의 흔들림은 피할 수 없지만, 그 흔들림 속에서 우리가 무엇 위에 삶을 세워 왔는지는 분명하게 나타나게 됩니다.

예수님의 말씀을 듣기만 한 신앙과, 듣고 행하며 살아낸 신앙의 차이는 위기의 순간에 더욱 분명해집니다. 이 아침, 우리의 신앙은 어떤 기초 위에 서 있는지 주님 앞에서 다시 한 번 정직하게 돌아보게 됩니다.

묵상

신앙생활의 기초를 모래위가 아니라 반석위에 세운다는 뜻이 무엇일까요? 주님이 가리키는 방향을 우리는 어떻게 분별할 수 있을까요?

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”(Matthew 7:24)

The final section of Matthew chapter 7 is a word of decision that Jesus offers as He brings the Sermon on the Mount to a close. Through these words, the Lord does not ask for mere understanding or emotional response. Rather, He asks which path of life we will choose to walk. Before this word, we are not called to remain listeners only, but to stand as people who respond with our lives.

Jesus first contrasts the narrow gate and the wide gate. The wide gate appears comfortable and is chosen by many, yet Jesus clearly warns that its end does not lead to life. The narrow gate, on the other hand, may seem difficult and at times lonely, but the Lord clearly declares that it is the path that leads to life. Faith begins not with following the majority, but with the decision to follow the direction the Lord points us toward.

Next, Jesus teaches us about true faith through the metaphor of trees and their fruit. No matter how religious one may appear or how convincing one’s words may sound, without the fruit of life, it cannot be called true faith. Faith does not remain at the level of verbal confession; it must be revealed through our attitudes, choices, and the fruit borne in our relationships.

Jesus also warns that calling out, “Lord, Lord,” is not enough. There is a clear gap between claiming to know God’s will and actually doing it in everyday life. This teaching may sound uncomfortable to those of us who are familiar with religious language, yet it is a crucial warning that keeps us spiritually awake and attentive.

Finally, Jesus concludes with the parable of the house built on the rock and the house built on the sand. At first glance, the two houses appear no different. However, when rain falls, winds blow, and floods come, the foundation on which each house is built is clearly revealed. While the storms of life are unavoidable, what truly matters is what we have built our lives upon.

The difference between a faith that only hears Jesus’ words and a faith that hears and puts them into practice becomes most evident in moments of crisis. This morning, we are invited to honestly reflect before the Lord on what kind of foundation our faith is standing upon.
