Matthew 9:2–8, Wednesday, September 30,

"Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven." (Matthew 9:2b)
Human thinking has its limits. Or more precisely — we keep running into things we didn't see coming. And because they arrive as something unfamiliar, they are hard to receive.
Yesterday I sat with Korean church pastors for a long time and we shared a lot of thoughts. There were many words. But we ended the gathering having named a kind of helplessness that none of us could resolve. The conversation ranged past all the usual boundaries — ideas that went further than we normally dare to say out loud — and then, with a laugh and a shrug, we came back around to where we started. Something like: well, who knows if any of this will actually happen.
There is much to think about, much to wrestle with. And in the middle of all of it, the one thing that cannot be allowed to collapse is the posture of the person doing the work — and the love for the church that brought everyone into the room. I came home from that gathering carrying the hope that the new thinking and the genuine effort would bear fruit, and that we would be a real source of strength for one another.
Today's passage is the healing of a paralyzed man. When Jesus says your sins are forgiven, the scribes immediately object — this is blasphemy, they say, only God can forgive sins. But what the text points to in explaining the healing is not the man's own faith. It is the faith of the people who carried him. When Jesus saw their faith.
Miracles are not made alone. They are made together.
Our faith — gathered, shared, sustained — is what builds this church. It is what builds the church in this land. It shapes what Christian community actually looks like in the world. Tonight the young adults are getting together for samgyupsal. It happens every year, and tonight friends are coming along too. I hope these moments keep accumulating, layering on top of one another, until together we find ourselves in the middle of something we couldn't have made alone.
Reflection
Miracles are made together.
Intercessory Prayer
Bible study is today, and the Wednesday young adult gathering as well. May every moment of it be something beautiful offered up to God.
The Korean Annual Conference begins next week. There is a great deal to prepare. Please pray for it.
