“The next day the whole Israelite congregation grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, ‘You have killed the Lord’s people.’” (Numbers 16:41)
This afternoon, someone knocked on the church door. It was a neighbor who lives near the playground-side parking lot, which offers access to a nearby residential area. There are about three households in that area, and due to limited parking, they were asking if it would be okay to use the church parking lot when events are held.
When there was a daycare at the church, things were a bit strict, so this person made the effort to come and ask directly.
I wondered if there was really a problem—but I appreciated that they came to ask, and I told them they could use the lot anytime.
Where does pickiness come from, and when does kindness appear? In life, we often encounter kindness from others—or extend it ourselves. But we also encounter people who are so difficult and rigid that we feel uncomfortable. I’ve even thought that if I’m not picky, people might not take me seriously.
So where does this divided heart come from?
As a pastor, I’ve given up on being picky. If I were to show that side of myself to the congregation, it could cause trouble for the church. That said, there are pastors who are quite meticulous—sometimes I admire them, but it’s not my way, so I don’t even try to emulate it.
The Israelites who came out of Egypt were also difficult people. Their complaints and grumblings constantly flew like arrows at Moses and Aaron. The Book of Numbers describes how God became angry with them.Behind this persistent grumbling was a mindset focused more on their discomfort than the miracles of the Exodus.
This isn’t to say that being picky leads to judgment—but rather, that where we choose to place our focus can change the direction of our lives.
Did you start your day being picky and irritable toward your family?Or were you generous with grace toward the world?
This morning, I joked with my teenage son, but he seemed uncomfortable.Whether I do things well or poorly—it all feels uncomfortable to him these days.To all parents caring for teens: hang in there. You're not alone.
Meditation
Have you ever poured your own discomfort onto someone else?
