"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:21)
My wife is back. Time moved quickly and then suddenly there she was. Korea feels far away in the abstract — but when you actually commit to going, a single busy day carries you there and back. The real distance, I think, was never the miles or the hours. It was something in the heart. Some things you simply cannot know from here — you have to go and see them, feel them. Distance and time don't explain everything.
We talked about church the whole time she was away — every call, every check-in. Maybe that's why it never felt like she was far.
Two people can be in the same room and be further apart than a continent if their thoughts don't meet. Some of you may know that feeling — a church that felt stuck, where communication kept breaking down, where every gathering felt like pushing against something. In those seasons, a pastor's heart is always uneasy.
At the Mission Dinner this year, something caught my eye right away: the average age of the people in the room. Close to eighty, I would estimate. And some familiar faces were missing. The aging and the plateauing are real. As the pastor standing in the middle of that, my mind runs in many directions — things to think through, decisions to make, problems to address. But in the middle of all of it, I felt something settle in me: I cannot let the time I spend quietly looking to the Lord keep shrinking.
When urgent things crowd in and anxiety starts to drive the decisions, when the emotion of the moment gets ahead of everything else — the church doesn't grow out of that. It just endures. What's needed is the capacity to sit still and pray deeply, so that whatever is done together is done from somewhere solid.
Paul writes this letter from prison. And yet the tone is not dark. It overflows with joy. The man in chains says he is rejoicing.
He is honest about the situation in verse 15. Some people are preaching Christ out of genuine goodwill. Others are doing it out of rivalry and selfish ambition — actually hoping, he says in verse 17, to make his imprisonment harder. Preaching the gospel with the intent of increasing someone's suffering. That is a remarkable thing to say.
And then verse 18: But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. The motives are impure. The preaching is real. And he chooses to be glad about the part that is real.
This is where my own struggle and Paul's converge. If the church keeps going, if worship continues, if people can still gather and share life together — I will do whatever it takes for that. Whatever form, whatever arrangement. Like Paul, the center is not my own comfort or reputation. The center is whether Christ is being made known.
Korean Christianity experienced genuine revival in the open air — great gatherings, Billy Graham at Yeouido, denominations and congregations setting aside their boundaries to hear the Word and pray together. That kind of unity matters. And somewhere along the way, it got replaced by churches guarding themselves against other churches, denominations treating other denominations as competitors. The surface reason is always doctrinal purity. The actual reason is usually numbers. That smallness is making things harder for the church everywhere.
To keep working toward genuine unity — sharing, listening, finding common ground — that is the spirit of what Paul says in verse 18. It doesn't matter how it gets done. What matters is that Christ is made known. Verse 20: Whether by life or by death, Christ will be exalted in my body. Not: how do I look, what do I get. Only: is Christ being honored.
Verse 21: For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. The reason for living is Christ. Life itself is life with Christ. Which means death holds nothing to fear — it is simply going further in.
Today Korean church pastors are gathering to talk about the realities we are all navigating. I am praying that the conversation is anchored in this: the reason we are alive is Christ.
Reflection
When to live is Christ, death holds no fear. A person whose center is clear is not shaken by what surrounds them.
Intercessory Prayer
Please pray for today's Korean church gathering — that it would find a larger vision and a shared direction, and that we would walk forward together.
Please pray for the ministries and congregation of Yeolin Church.
