Psalm 17, Tuesday, September 1

"Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings." (Psalm 17:8)
I've been thinking about how to actually rest. What does it mean to rest well? Is it doing nothing? Should I stop using my mind altogether — is that what rest is? Does reading count as rest? Monday stretched out in front of me as a whole day to figure out, and I found myself genuinely unsure what to do with it. I'm not naturally good at being alone with unstructured time. Spending a day without direction or purpose feels more like being stranded than restored. I didn't love it.
And so Tuesday comes in busy. Things that piled up since Sunday, a list of tasks to sort through — distinguishing between what needs doing and what has been handed to me to carry. I try to use the morning well, but time doesn't cooperate the way I want it to.
Today's passage is Psalm 17, written by David. Reading it, I can see David was up against something that wasn't going his way either. This is a song written out of grievance — a sense of being wronged. He says he followed the Lord's path, and still found himself in an unjust situation. On the surface it almost sounds like a complaint directed at God. And yet verse 8 turns: Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. What's underneath the frustration is not resentment but longing — a desire for God to be close, to cover, to protect.
Did the prayer change anything? Not the circumstances. What shifted was the posture — and the direction of his gaze. Feeling wronged is inherently personal. What feels deeply unjust to me might look entirely reasonable from the other side, or might not register as a significant problem at all. What matters, in the end, is what orientation we bring to it. God has saved us — is that enough to anchor us? Or are we still measuring our contentment by how much else falls into place around us? Those are genuinely different questions.
Some of you may look at what I share and think my life sounds complicated and messy. But most of us are moving along a similar arc. Smooth, worry-free lives are rare. Most people are just quieter about the difficult parts — they don't name them out loud. Faith, at its core, is the practice of showing yourself honestly before God. And perhaps going a step further — letting the community see something of that too. We may need that more than we think.
Reflection
Faith is the practice of being honest with yourself — and another way to say that is: prayer.
