"그러므로 진노를 두려워해서만이 아니라, 양심을 생각해서도 복종해야 합니다." (롬 13:5, 새번역)
지난 금요일 부터 월요일까지 이 긴시간을 청년들이 모여서 수련회를 가졌습니다. 연합수련회, 이 시대에 가장 낯선 용어중에 하나가 연합입니다. 각자가 할 수 없는 걸, 함께모여서 하는 것. 굳이 하지 않아도 되는 걸 그것도 교단이 다른 교회들이 모여서 함께 예배를 드렸습니다.
강사 목사님은 예수전도단에서 사역하는 목사님이십니다. 설교가 1시간이 넘는데도 청년들이 월요일까지 시간을 보내고 수련회에 참여합니다. 긴 롱 위크앤드라는 이름으로 이런 저런 계획을 세워도 문안할텐데 수련회라는 특별한 시간을 결정하고 참여하고 시간을 보냅니다. 돌도 안지난 아이들을 등에 들춰업고 참석하는 젊은 가족도 있습니다.
이들에게 주어진 시간을 특별하게 사용하고 싶은 마음을 보았습니다. 직장인 학생들이 섞인 연합 청년수련회는 잘 마쳐졌습니다. 교회는 기꺼이 공간을 열었고, 아낌없이 후원했습니다.
3년째 진행된 이 수련회의 첫번째 시작은 트리니티 채플이었습니다. 잠깐의 대화속에 트리니티 채플에대한 이야기를 나누었고, 주일예배때 함께한 연합찬양팀이 한달에 한번 트리니티 채플에서 주일예배 찬양인도를 하고, 연합수련회를 계속 해서 준비하는 비전을 나누었습니다. "BOS" Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco,의 앞글자로 만들어진 이 수련회의 시작은 어릴적 함께 신앙생활했던 친구를 여기서 만나서 부터 시작되었다고 합니다. 작은 인연이 큰 비전으로 그리고 조금만 마음을 넓히면 더 큰 사역으로 연결되는 것 같습니다.
오늘 성경구절은 바울이 로마교회에 쓴 편지 내용입니다. 로마는 네로가 집권하기 직전 또는 집권초기의 시기였을 것입니다. 이때 기독교인들은 로마의 박해의 기운이 막 시작될 무렵에 위기를 느꼈을 것이고, 바울은 이에 "위에 있는 권세에 복종하라."라는 말씀을 전하게 합니다.
사실, 당시 기독교인들은 로마사회에서 눈여겨볼 만한 특징이 있었습니다. 사람들 사이에 특이합니다. 자기들끼리 자주 모이는데, 로마시민으로사의 역할은 최선을 다했다고 합니다. 뭔가 트집을 잡을만한 것이 없이 세금도 잘내고, 권위에 복종하고, 사회질서를 잘 지키는데 헌신하는 그런데 뭔가 자기들끼리 잘모이는..
실제로 로마는 이런 기독교인들을 어떻게 다루어야할지 판단이 세워지지 않았었다고 합니다.
바울은 신앙의 원칙은 기독교인은 어디에 있든지 그들이 사는 나라의 질서에 잘 적응하는 것을 그리스도의 삶이라고 이야기하는 것입니다. 정치적 권력에 절대 복종을 이야기하는 것이 아니라, 어디든 시민으로 누려야한 책임을 잘 완수하라는 것이 바울의 부탁입니다.
그러면 불의한 권력에도 순응하라고 이야기했을까? 두려움이 아니라 양심으로 이 사회를 살아가는 것으로 오히려 힘에 의한 순응이라기보다는 책임이라는 관점에서 나눈 이야기라는 것을 기억해야합니다.
기독교인은 믿음으로 살지만, 책임으로 세상에 드러나진다는 사실을 기억해야합니다. 기독교청년들이 지금 수련회에서 훈련한건 믿음이 있다! 가 아니라 믿음이 있으니 이에 따른 책임에 대해서 훈련한것입니다.

믿음을 가진다와, 책임을 드러낸다는 어떤 차이가 있을까요? 믿음은 가끔 조용하게 순종하는 것으로 오해하는데, 믿음을 드러내는 책임을 통해 믿음이 풍성해지는 것입니다.

"Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience." (Romans 13:5)
From Friday through Monday, the young adults gathered for their retreat. A joint retreat — and in this era, joint is one of the stranger words in the vocabulary. Doing together what none of us could do alone. Coming together across church lines, across denominations, to worship. And they did it over a long weekend that could easily have been spent otherwise.
The speaker was a pastor from Youth With A Mission. Sermons running over an hour, and the students stayed through Monday. Young working adults and students mixed together, a baby not yet a year old carried in on someone's back — people choosing to spend this particular stretch of time in a particular way. Something in them wanted to use it for something that mattered.
The retreat ended well. The church opened its space without hesitation and supported it generously.
This is the third year of this gathering. It started at Trinity Chapel. A brief conversation led to a shared vision: the joint worship team that participated on Sunday now leads worship at Trinity Chapel one Sunday a month, and the annual retreat keeps going. The name they gave themselves is BOS — Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco. It began, I'm told, when someone ran into a childhood friend from church in this city after years apart. A small connection became a large vision, and a little openness turned it into something even larger.
Today's passage is from Paul's letter to the church in Rome, written around the time Nero was coming into power — either just before or early in his reign. Christians at that moment could feel something shifting. The atmosphere of persecution was beginning to gather. And into that, Paul says: submit to the governing authorities.
What made the early Christians interesting to Roman society is worth noting. They were unusual. They gathered frequently on their own. But as citizens of Rome, they were exemplary — taxes paid, authority respected, social order upheld. Rome struggled to know what to make of them, because there was genuinely nothing to accuse them of.
What Paul is teaching is not absolute submission to political power. He is saying that wherever Christians find themselves, living well within the society around them is itself an expression of the life of Christ. Not political compliance, but civic responsibility. Fulfilling the obligations of the place where you live — as a matter of conscience, not coercion.
Would Paul have said the same thing about unjust power? The distinction he draws is exactly that: conscience, not fear. This is not about bending to force. It is about understanding responsibility. What the young adults were training in at that retreat was not simply I have faith — it was because I have faith, here is what I am responsible for.
Reflection
What is the difference between holding faith and demonstrating responsibility? Faith is sometimes misread as quiet compliance — but it grows fuller when it takes shape as visible responsibility.
Intercessory Prayer
Please pray for the students beginning a new semester — that the church would be a solid and safe place for them, and that through Yeolin Church they would grow further, more securely, more fully.
