"그러므로 그것은 사람의 의지나 노력에 달려 있는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 자비에 달려 있습니다." (롬 9:16, 새번역)

가끔 제가 답하기 곤란한 질문을 받을 때가 있습니다. 사람에 대한 평판에 대한 물음 부터 우리교회가 아닌 다른 공동체에 대한 질문등 제가 잘 모르는 것에 대한 질문이 주어질때가 있습니다. 필요한 것에 대한 요청일수도있지만, 대부분은 제가 잘 모르는 것이라는 생각에 왠만하면 응답하지 않는 것이 좋겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.

아마 위치와 나이 그리고 필요한 것을 이야기해야하는 책임등이 주어진 때가 바로 지금이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 바꿔말하면 누군가가 똑같이 나에 대해서, 그리고 교회에 대해세 묻고 이야기한다는 것일 수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다.

우리가 하는 행위만큼 다른 사람도 비슷한 행위와 생각을 하게 될것이고, 우리가 판단하는 만큼 우리도 그런 판단을 받고 이야기꺼리가 될 수 있다는 것, 이건 어쩌면 그냥 우리들이 살아가는 삶의 모양이 이렇다는 것을 드러내 보이는 것일 수 있습니다.

즉 삶은 누구에게나 공평하게 주어지는것을 따라 살아가는데 어떤 선택과 어떤 마음으로 상대와 자신을 보는 것은 결국 그 사람이 가진 성숙함에 비례해서 평가되어진다는 뜻인것 같습니다.

여기에 오늘 본문은 바울이 주는 특별한 하나님의 질서 안에서 우리들이 세상을 어떻게 판단하고 이야기하는 가에 대한 내용이 담겨있습니다. 사람의 의지나 노력이 아니라, 하나님의 자비에 달려있다는 바울의 고백은 바울 자신이 걸어온 삶에 대한 해석이고, 다르게 보면, 다른 사람에 대한 하나님의 자비의 영향을 인정하는 것이 곧 복음을 잘 이해하는 것이라는 바울의 가르침이 돋보입니다.

잘아시는 것처럼 바울은 핍박자였고, 이런 바울이 예수를 만나 복음을 전하는자가 되었으니 이 모든 것들이 하나님의 자비!라고 고백할 수 밖에 없는 바울이 경험이 잘 녹아있는 고백입니다. 우리는 다른 것 생각하지 말고 하나님의 자비가 우리들이 생각하는 것보다 더 크고 놀랍다는 사실을 기억하고 세상과 마주해야합니다.

내 생각과 내 기준보다 더 큰 하나님의 사랑, 그 자비의 은혜로 우리도 그리스도인 되었음을 기억하시기 바랍니다.

"It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God's mercy." (Romans 9:16)

There are questions I sometimes find genuinely difficult to answer. Questions about someone's reputation, or about communities other than our own, or about things I simply don't know well enough to speak to. These questions may come from real need — but more often than not, my honest feeling is that staying quiet is the wiser choice.

Something about this moment in life makes that instinct feel more urgent. Position, age, the responsibilities that come with being where I am — all of it seems to call for more care, not less. And there is a mirror effect worth acknowledging: whatever I say about others is the same kind of thing that could be said about me, about this church. Whatever judgments I make are the same kind of judgments I am subject to. That is just the shape of the life we all share.

In other words, how we see other people and ourselves — with what kind of heart, with what kind of criteria — tends to reflect back the measure of our own maturity. The way we use our words reveals us.

Into all of this, today's passage from Paul carries something specific. Paul's confession that it is not human will or effort but God's mercy that determines things — this is not just abstract theology. It is Paul's interpretation of his own life. He was a persecutor of the church. He stood by watching Stephen die. And then he met Jesus, and became the one proclaiming the gospel he had once tried to destroy. If anyone had reason to say this is nothing but God's mercy, it was Paul. The confession is wrung out of lived experience, not arrived at theoretically.

And if Paul's transformation was the result of God's mercy — then so is everyone else's. Recognizing that God's mercy is at work in other people's lives too, in ways we cannot see and did not predict, is what it actually means to understand the gospel. Paul is not just making a theological point about election. He is teaching us how to look at the world and at each other.

We don't need to complicate this. God's mercy is larger and more surprising than anything we can measure. That mercy is the reason we are here — the reason any of us became followers of Jesus at all. We received something we did not earn and could not produce through effort or willpower.

1. Please pray for the renewal of Yeolin Church. The last week or two have felt quieter — pray for recovery, and for those who have been absent. Pray for health as well.
