"너희가 기도할 때에, 이루어질 것을 믿으면서 구하는 것은, 무엇이든지 다 받을 것이다." (마 21:22, 새번역)

무화과 나무 이야기는 읽을때 마다 이해가 되질 않습니다. 예수님 본인이 시장하셔서 원하는 무화과 나무열매가 없다고 무화과 나무를 저주하는 내용은 아무리 읽어도 비유로 읽어야할 내용이라는 생각밖에 들지 않습니다. 누구를 비유한 것일까? 누구에게 들으라고 한 내용일까?

21절에, "너희가 믿고 의심하지 않으면", 믿음의 조건에 대해서 이야기합니다. "의심하지 않으면"..

기도하면 모든것이 이루어지지 않습니다. 기도로 모든 것이 성취된다면 세상 복잡할것 같습니다. 믿음은 기도한대로 이뤄지는 것을 기대하는 행위가 아니라, 이루어지지 않아도 의심하지 않고 계속해서 기도할 수 있는 것이 믿음이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

무화과에 열매가 없다는 것은 어쩌면 신앙생활을 그렇게 하고, 믿는다고 하면서 가장 가벼운것에 걸려서 모든것을 포기하는 것을 두고 이야기하는 것일 수 있습니다. 그렇게 오래 교회다녀도.... 그렇게 오래 예수를 믿어도 변한게 없냐? 이런 소리와 같은 것 같습니다.

22절에도 보면, "이루어질 것을 믿으면서 구하는 것은 무엇이든지 다 받을 것이다." 기도가 만사형통이다! 이런 뜻이 아니라, 기도의 자세를 이야기하는 것입니다. 이루어질걸 믿으면서 기도하는 것이지, 이게 될까? 혹시나 하는 마음으로 기도하지 말라는 것입니다.

전체적인 맥락은 내가 원하는 것이 이루어질 것을 위해 기도하는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 역사, 하나님이 이루시는 것을 위한것임을 분명히 하고 있습니다.

우리는 기도를 개인적으로 생각하지만, 사실 하나님의 일을 위해 필요한 영적훈련이 기도입니다. 내가 가지고 싶은것, 취하고 싶은것, 되고 싶은 것을 위해서 기도하는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 뜻을 이루기 위해서 기도하는 것이라는 것입니다.

무화과가 열매가 없다는 의미는, 여전히 자기 자신만을 생각하는 기도에 몰입하는 것을 경계하라는 의미입니다.

"If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." (Matthew 21:22)

The fig tree story gives me trouble every time I read it. Jesus is hungry, he sees a fig tree, he goes to it and finds nothing but leaves — and he curses it. No matter how many times I read it, it feels like it has to be read as a parable. But a parable for whom? Who is meant to hear it?

Verse 21 offers the hinge: if you believe and do not doubt. The condition is not just belief, but the absence of doubt. And thinking about that, something shifted for me. Faith is not the expectation that prayer produces outcomes. Faith is what allows you to keep praying even when outcomes don't come — without letting go, without giving up, without sliding into doubt.

The fruitless fig tree might be a picture of exactly that. Someone who has been going to church for years. Someone who calls themselves a believer. And yet the smallest thing trips them up and they walk away from everything. After all that time following Jesus — nothing changed? That is the rebuke underneath the image.

Verse 22 isn't a prosperity promise. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. The operative word is believe — the posture of prayer is what's being described. Not the hesitant maybe this will work prayer, but the prayer offered with genuine confidence that God is at work. The difference is orientation — not toward what I want, but toward what God is doing.

That's the fuller frame. Prayer is not primarily a personal wish list. It is the spiritual discipline through which we participate in what God is doing in the world. The warning embedded in the cursed fig tree may be aimed at prayer that stays entirely self-focused — prayer that never moves outside the circle of my own wants, my own ambitions, my own comfort.

That kind of tree has leaves. It looks like something. But it has no fruit.
