그 때에 주님의 영광이 그룹들에게서 떠올라 성전 문지방으로 옮겨갔고, 성전에는 구름이 가득 차고, 안뜰은 주님의 영광에서 나오는 광채로 가득 찼다.(에스겔 10:4)

지난번에 나누었던 교회 뒷동산에 있는 메모리얼 동판의 누나가 이메일로 연락이 왔습니다. 1989년 미 해병대 중위였던(1st RT) Roser Perters라는 분을 기리기 위해 만들어놓은 동판과 주변에 심은 나무를 심었다고 합니다. 오키나와에서 헬기 추락으로 27살 젊은 나이에 목숨을 잃은 아들을 위해 부모들이 교회 뒷동산에 기록을 남긴것입니다. 교회의 주인이 바뀌었다(?!)는 소식을 듣고 어떻게 되었나 궁금하기도 하고 원하면 다른 곳으로 이전하겠다고 하는걸, 지난번 나눈것처럼 교회를 그대로 보존하는고 우리도 유족의 마음을 잘 기억하고 이분에 대한 기억을 교인들과 공유하겠다고 이야기를 나누었습니다.

저희와 별상관 없는 사람이지만, 이제 우리는 이 분이 누구이고, 왜 거기에 부모들이 아들을 기리기 위해 동판을 세우고, 나무를 심었는지 알게되었습니다. 그러니 이제 상관없는 분이 아니라, 우리에게도 깊은 인연이 만들어졌다고 볼 수 있습니다.

우리와 상관없는 사람들의 기억도 관심을 가지고 들여다 보면, 우리와 상관있게되는 것 같습니다. 자식 가진 부모의 마음, 또는 자식으로서 헤아릴 수 있는 부모의 마음을 들여다 볼 수 있는 관심이 생겼다고 볼 수 있겠죠.

오늘 읽은 에스겔서 본문은 하나님의 영광이 성전에서 떠나는 환상을 하나 하나 기록하고 있습니다. 에스겔에게 주어진 환상은 예언을 위해 부름받은자로서는 꽤 낙심이 될만한 하나님의 냉정한 기록들이 앞서서 보여주고 있습니다. 하나님이 이스라엘을(남유다)를 심판할 수 밖에 없었던 이유, 그리고 지금 포로로 끌려와서 먼 이국땅에서 이런 환상을 보여줌으로 "왜 하나님의 나라 이스라엘은 망했고, 땅도 빼앗기고, 하나님은 바벨론의 신 마루둑에게 패한것인가?"에 대한 질문에 대한 답을 에스겔의 환상을 통해 답하고 있는것 같습니다.

포로로 끌려오게된것도 하나님의 계획이고 그 과정속에서 예루살렘 성전에서 하나님의 영광이 이미 떠났다는 것이 에스겔이 본 환상입니다.

나라가 망하고 포로로 끌려왔다는 극단적인 고통앞에서 이들이 가질 수 있는 마음은 두가밖에 없습니다. 하나는 막연한 희망을 가지고 회복을 기대하는 것, 또 다른 하나는 포기하고 주어진 삶을 사는 것, 이 두가지중 어느것이 옳다고 할 수 없지만, 에스겔서는 철저한 반성과 원인을 이해하고, 하나님이 어떻게 우리를 이끌어가실 것인가?에 대해서 이야기하고 있습니다.

갑작스럽게 전쟁상황도 아닌데 훈련중에 아들의 전사소식을 들은 부모와 가족들, 그리고 교회공동체들은 깊은 슬픔에 빠졌을 것입니다. 비슷하게 두가지 마음, 현실을 받아들이고 그냥 주어진 삶을 살아내던지 아니면 슬픔을 외면한채 세상과 담을 쌓고 살던지... 이런 복잡하고 상상할 수 없는 슬픔은 예상치 못하게 교회뒷동산에 나무를 심고 동판을 세우는 행위를 이끌어냈습니다.

구약에 등장하는 예언의 행위는 주어진 현실을 똑바로 마주하고, 그 현실을 만들어낸 원인을 확인하고 회개를 통한 회복을 이야기합니다. 에스겔서는 지금 어떤 현실, 어떤 상황에 이스라엘이 놓였고, 포로로 끌려오게된 이유를 이야기합니다. 그리고 마침내 하나님이 어떻게 회복시키실것인가?에 대해서 이야기할 것입니다.

마찬가지로 우리들의 삶도 이런 비슷한 상황에서 비슷하게 경험하게 될 것입니다. 돌이키고 깊이 기도하고 깨닫고, 현실을 피하지 않고 마주하면서 회복과 치유 그리고 예상치 못한 하나님의 이끄심에 대한 고백을 이어가게 될 것입니다. 신앙생활은 막연하게 긍정적인 것만을 경험하며 사는 삶이 아니라는 것은 우리에게 또 다른 축복이라고 고백할 수 있을 것입니다.

묵상

마주한 현실을 피하는 것에 능숙합니까? 정면 돌파에 능숙합니까? 어느방법이 더 좋다는 것을 말씀드리는 것이 아니라, 결국 우리들은 이런 통증을 겪고나면 이것이 나에게 주어진 삶이라고 이해할 날이 올것입니다. 이것이 하나님과 동행하는 축복된 삶의 모습입니다.

Recently, I received an email from the sister of the man whose memorial plaque is on the hill behind our church. The plaque commemorates 1st Lt. Roser Perters, a U.S. Marine who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash in Okinawa in 1989 at the young age of 27. His parents planted a tree and placed the plaque there in his memory. Upon hearing that the ownership of the church may have changed, the family reached out, wondering what had happened. They even offered to relocate the plaque if necessary.

But just as we shared last time, we assured them that we intend to preserve the church grounds and honor the memory of their loved one. We also expressed our desire to share his story with our congregation.

Although we had no prior connection to this individual, now that we know who he was and why his parents planted a tree and placed a memorial on this land, he is no longer a stranger. A meaningful connection has been formed.

When we take time to reflect on the memories of people we thought had nothing to do with us, they begin to matter deeply. As parents ourselves—or as children who can try to understand a parent’s heart—we begin to share in their grief and love.

Today’s reading from Ezekiel records a vision in which the glory of the Lord departs from the temple. This vision must have been deeply discouraging for Ezekiel, who was called as a prophet to proclaim God’s word. The chapters leading up to this have shown God's harsh but justified judgment.

Through this vision, God responds to the questions that must have filled the hearts of the exiles: “Why did the kingdom of Israel fall? Why were we taken from our land? Did the God of Israel lose to the god of Babylon, Marduk?” Ezekiel’s vision reveals that the fall of Jerusalem and the exile were not due to God’s weakness, but part of His judgment and sovereign plan. The glory of God had already departed from the temple.

For those who experienced national collapse and exile, only two emotional paths remained: one was to hold on to vague hope for restoration; the other was to accept reality and simply survive. Ezekiel doesn’t choose either naivety or despair. He leads the people to deep reflection—to understand the cause of their suffering and to ask, “How is God leading us even now?”

When Roser’s parents received the devastating news of their son’s death—not in war but in training—they and their church must have been engulfed in grief. Like the Israelites, they faced two choices: shut themselves off from the world or somehow live through it. In their case, their sorrow became a tree planted on a hill, and a plaque engraved with love.

In the Old Testament, prophetic acts always called people to face their reality, identify the cause of their suffering, and seek restoration through repentance. That is what Ezekiel is doing: he is naming the reality, explaining the reason, and pointing to the promise of God's restoration.

Our lives, too, often reflect these moments. When we are willing to face hardship, pray deeply, and discern God's presence rather than escape reality, we begin the journey toward healing and transformation. True life of faith is not about naïve optimism but the strength to walk with God through every trial. That, in itself, is a blessing.

Are you skilled at avoiding reality? Or are you someone who pushes through head-on?This isn’t about which is better. In time, we come to realize that what we once resisted or feared was, in fact, the life entrusted to us. And walking through it with God—that is the blessed life.
