교회에서 가장 흔하게 듣는 말이 "사랑"이죠. 그런데 가장 흔한 만큼 사랑을 삶으로 드러내는 것은 늘 어렵다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 마음은 상처받기 쉽고 사람이 그 상처를 아겨내고 사랑을 하고 싶어도 상처가 극복되지 않으면 사랑은 외면되는 것 같습니다.

노래 중에 "사랑은 왜 도망가"라는 어떤 연인의 안타까운 사랑을 노래한 곡인데, 가끔 우리들이 고백하고 이야기하는 교회안에 사랑도 늘 도망간다는 느낌으로 이 노래를 들은적이 있습니다.

2026년 새해가 밝았다고 하지만, 마주한 현실은 크게 달라지지 않았습니다. 예전에는 큰 결심도 하고, 이런 저런 계획도 거창했던것 같은데 이제는 주어지는 시간을 따라가느라 정신이 없습니다. 어제 작은 아들이 대학원서를 마무리하고는 왜 이 학교들을 지원하게되었는지에 대한 설명을 들었습니다. 들어도 잘 모르겠는, 아이의 설명은 분명히 저는 이걸 위해 할거에요!와 함께 혹시 모르니까 다른 과목을 공부할 수 있을 여지를 남겨두고 이 학교를 지원하는 거에요!라는 말밖에 들리지 않습니다.

불안함과 마주한 현실에 적응하기 위한 나름의 대안을 생각한듯 합니다.

우리들이 성경과 예수님을 그리고 하나님을 한 단어로 설명하면 "사랑"입니다. "하나님은 사랑이시라"라는 고백은 어떤 마음으로 세상을 만드시고 예수 그리스도를 이땅에 보내셨느지를 잘 드러내는 고백입니다. 그런데 이 고백에는 대안과 다른 여지가 없습니다. 네 마음과 네뜻과 네 힘을 다해 하나님을 사랑하고 네 이웃을 네몸과 같이 사랑하라! 이 고백도 다른 대안이 없습니다. 신앙생활을 한다는 것은 이 사랑을 받고 실천한다는 의미로 이해하셔도 됩니다. 이것이 우리 신앙의 중심입니다.

이 사랑이 없이 다른것을 한다는 것은 무리입니다. 교회봉사도 사랑이 기본이고, 여러분들이 섬기는 모든 이들이 사랑을 기본으로 하지 않으면 빈 깡통같다고 볼 수 있습니다.

지난주일에 임원교육때 교회안에 손님과 주인이 있다고 말씀드렸습니다. 손님은 지적하고, 불평하고 맘에 안들면 다시는 안올수 있지만, 주인은 조용히 걸레를 들고 닦에내고, 부족한것을 채우고, 어떻게해서든 잘되게 하려는 마음을 가진다고 말씀드렸습니다. 이것도 "사랑"이 기본으로 깊이 깔려 있어야 가능합니다.

오늘 본문에서 하나님을 보려면, "사랑"으로 가능하다고 요한이 고백하고 있습니다. 이 고백을 잘 기억하시고, 2026년 사랑의 하나님과 든든히 동행하시기를 기도합니다.

“Love” is probably the word we hear most often in the church.Yet, precisely because it is so common, we also realize how difficult it is to actually live out love. Our hearts are easily wounded. Even when we want to love, when those wounds remain unresolved, love often gets pushed aside.

There is a song titled “Why Does Love Run Away?”—a song that sings of a couple’s heartbreaking love. At times, I have listened to that song thinking about the love we confess and talk about in the church. It can feel as though love, even in the church, keeps running away.

Although a new year, 2026, has dawned, the reality we face has not changed all that much. In the past, we made big resolutions and grand plans. Now, we are simply trying to keep up with the time given to us, barely catching our breath. Yesterday, my younger son finished submitting his graduate school applications and explained why he chose those schools. To be honest, much of his explanation was hard for me to fully grasp. What I clearly heard was this: “This is what I want to do,” and at the same time, “Just in case, I chose schools that leave room to study other fields as well.”

It seemed like his way of facing anxiety and reality—thinking through alternatives in order to adapt.

If we were to describe the Bible, Jesus, and God in a single word, that word would be “love.”The confession “God is love” reveals the heart with which God created the world and sent Jesus Christ into it. But this confession leaves no room for alternatives. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no backup plan here. To live a life of faith means receiving this love and putting it into practice. This is the very center of our faith.

Trying to do anything without love is unrealistic. Church service must be grounded in love. Everything you do to serve others, if it is not rooted in love, is like an empty can—hollow and noisy.

Last Sunday, during our leadership training, I spoke about how there are “guests” and “owners” in the church. Guests criticize, complain, and leave if they are dissatisfied. Owners quietly pick up a rag, wipe things down, fill what is lacking, and do whatever they can to make things work. This, too, is only possible when love is deeply embedded at the core.

In today’s passage, John confesses that seeing God is possible only through love. Hold on to this confession, and I pray that in 2026 you will walk firmly alongside the God of love.
