요한일서는 예수께서 그리스도이심을 믿는 자가 하나님께로부터 난 사람이라고 말합니다. 믿음은 단순히 옳은 교리를 고백하는 일이 아니라, 하나님의 생명이 우리 안에 시작되었다는 증거입니다.

그 믿음은 반드시 사랑으로 이어집니다. 하나님을 사랑한다고 말하면서 형제자매를 외면할 수 없습니다. 하나님께로부터 난 사람은, 하나님의 마음을 닮아가기 때문입니다. 그래서 사랑은 선택이 아니라 자연스러운 열매입니다.

그러나 사랑은 언제나 쉽지 않습니다. 사람은 상처를 주고, 오해는 쌓이며, 관계는 버거워집니다. 그럼에도 요한은 말합니다. 하나님의 계명은 무거운 짐이 아니라고. 그 이유는 우리가 혼자의 힘으로 사랑하는 존재가 아니라, 이미 하나님께로부터 난 사람이기 때문입니다. 사랑은 노력의 결과가 아니라, 하나님 안에 머무는 삶의 결과입니다.

세상은 여전히 우리를 압도합니다. 불안, 두려움, 경쟁, 좌절은 매일같이 우리를 흔듭니다. 최근 미국의 방향은 우리를 혼란스럽게 합니다. 특별히 가장 기독교적인 정부라고 자평하고 실제로 많은 기독교인들이 지지지하는 정부라고 이야기하는 미국정부가 베네수엘라에게 석유를 얻고, 덴마크에게 그린란드를 달라고 떼스는 것을 보면서 예수그리스도를 믿는다는 것에 대한 깊은 질문을 할 수 밖에 없습니다.

미국 자국우선 주의는 지금까지 미국이 다른 나라에 강탈을 당했고, 더이상 이런일을 좌시하지 않겠다는 꽤 적극적인 자국민을 보호하려는 의지로 보입니다. 하지만 최근 유엔에서 운영하는 환경이나 여성에 관련된 모든 단체에서 미국이 탈퇴했다는 뉴스는 자극민을 보호한다는 취지보다는 예전과 같은 여유가 없어보이는 것처럼 보입니다. 여기에 석유와 자원을 얻기 위해 다른 나라의 주권을 가볍게 여기는 것은 예전처럼 미국이 위대해지려는 노력이 19세기말, 20세기에 초에 유행했던 제국주의로 돌아선것은 아닌가라는 우려를 낳게 합니다.

이런 상황에서 기독교적 신앙고백으로 세워진 미국을 우리는 어떻게 이해할수 있을까? 정말 우리들이 고백하는 예수 그리스도 하나님 나라를 세우기 위해 노력하는 기독교적인 삶과 지금 미국이 보여주는 현실과 일치하는 가?

오늘 본문은 세상을 이긴 승리는 능력이 환경에서 나오는 것이 아니라 믿음을 통해 드러난다고 이야기하고 있습니다. 예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 그 믿음으로 우리들이 든든히 세워진다는 것입니다.

로마의 큰 앞에 기독교인들이 큰 박해를 당했고, 간신히 살아나온 요한의 고백은 지금 우리들에게 진정한 믿음과 신앙 그리고 어디에 힘을 두어야할지에 대해서 이야기하고 있습니다. 결국 사랑을 실천하는 것이 우리들이 기대하는 모든 힘의 근원이 된다는 사실을 기억해야합니다. 20세기의 풍요로움을 그리워하며 21세기를 20세기의 무모함을 보였던 발자취를 따르지 않도록 우리들이 기도할때입니다. 성도는 믿음으로 세상을 사는 존재라는 사실을 잊지 말아야 합니다.

묵상

우리들이 기대하는 능력은 무엇을 이야기하는 것일까요? 겉으로 드러나는 힘인가요? 사랑인가요? 정말 사랑이 힘이 될 수 있다고 믿으세요?

1. 미국을 위해서 기도해주세요. 위대함은 힘을 휘둘러서 드러나는 것이 아니라 절제와 관용 그리고 드러내놓지 않고 보여주는 품격에서 나올 수 있다는 것을 위해서 기도해주세요.

First John tells us that whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. Faith is not merely confessing correct doctrine; it is the evidence that God’s life has begun within us.

That faith inevitably leads to love. We cannot claim to love God while turning away from our brothers and sisters. Those who are born of God gradually come to resemble the heart of God. Love, therefore, is not a choice we force ourselves to make, but a natural fruit that grows from faith.

Yet love is never easy. People wound one another, misunderstandings accumulate, and relationships become burdensome. Still, John tells us that God’s commandments are not heavy. The reason is that we are not people who love by our own strength alone; we are already born of God. Love is not the result of effort, but the result of abiding in God.

The world continues to overwhelm us. Anxiety, fear, competition, and disappointment shake us daily. The current direction of the United States is especially confusing. As we watch a government that describes itself as deeply Christian—and is supported by many Christians—seek oil from Venezuela and pressure Denmark over Greenland, we cannot help but ask difficult questions about what it truly means to believe in Jesus Christ.

American “America First” policies appear to stem from a strong desire to protect its own people, based on the belief that the nation has long been taken advantage of and should no longer tolerate it. However, recent news that the United States has withdrawn from UN-affiliated organizations related to the environment and women suggests not confidence, but a loss of the generosity and margin it once had. Moreover, treating the sovereignty of other nations lightly in the pursuit of oil and resources raises concerns that efforts to “make America great again” may resemble a return to imperialism reminiscent of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In such a context, how are we to understand a nation founded upon Christian confessions of faith? Does the Christian life we claim—striving to build the kingdom of God proclaimed by Jesus Christ—truly align with the reality we see unfolding in America today?

Today’s passage tells us that the victory that overcomes the world does not come from power or circumstances, but from faith. It is faith in Jesus as the Son of God that establishes us firmly.

John’s confession, born out of persecution under the vast power of the Roman Empire and written by one who barely survived, speaks to us today about true faith, true belief, and where our strength must rest. In the end, we must remember that practicing love is the true source of all the power we hope for. This is a time for prayer, so that in longing for the prosperity of the 20th century, we do not repeat its recklessness in the 21st century. We must not forget that believers are those who live in the world by faith.
