그런데 좋은 땅에 뿌린 씨는 말씀을 듣고서 깨닫는 사람을 두고 하는 말인데, 이 사람이야말로 열매를 맺되, 백 배 혹은 육십 배 혹은 삼십 배의 결실을 낸다.”(마 13:23)

분주한 한 주를 보내고 잘 도착했습니다. 46명의 목회자를 대상으로 Growing Church Conference를 진행하는 것은 배움과 쉼이 함께해야 하고, 동시에 감동이 함께하는 모임이어야 합니다. 제 개인이 참석하지만, 이 모임을 통해 교회 사역을 재점검하고 확인하는 시간으로 매년 이 시간은 한 한해 목회를 위해 거름 쌓는 일을 하는 시간입니다.

컨퍼런스중에 아침에 칼럼을 보내려고 했는데 제 컴퓨터를 메인 프리젠테이션으로 사용해서 기회를 보지 못했습니다. 마음은 제가 받은 은혜와 감동을 그때 그때 나누고 싶은데 그러지 못해서 아쉬웠습니다.

목사가 분주해 보인다고 생각하시겠지만, 이런 행사보다 목사는 교인들로 바빠야 합니다.

아침 9시 이전에 교회에 출근해서 하루 종일 교회에 머뭅니다. 특별히 심방 계획을 세우지 않으면 사무실에 머물려고 노력합니다. 그러니 언제든지 교회에 오시면 저와 이야기를 나눌 수 있습니다.

다음 주부터 성도들 사업자 심방을 하려고 합니다. 제가 간단한 차와 간식을 준비해 가려고 합니다. 그러니 편안하게 맞아 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 길지 않아도 되고, 단 몇 분만이라도 이야기를 나누는 것도 좋습니다.

오늘 본문은 씨 뿌리는 자의 비유와 가라지의 비유를 통해 하나님의 나라가 어떻게 우리 삶 속에서 자라가는지를 보여줍니다. 예수님은 같은 씨가 뿌려졌지만 서로 다른 결과를 맺는 이유를 ‘땅’의 상태에서 찾으십니다. 길가, 돌밭, 가시떨기, 그리고 좋은 땅. 씨의 문제가 아니라 마음의 문제입니다. 말씀은 이미 우리에게 주어졌습니다. 중요한 것은 내가 어떤 땅인가 하는 질문입니다.

길가는 듣기는 하지만 깨닫지 못하는 마음입니다. 말씀이 스쳐 지나가지만 깊이 스며들지 않습니다. 돌밭은 즉시 기쁨으로 받지만 뿌리가 없어 환난과 핍박이 오면 곧 넘어집니다. 가시떨기는 세상의 염려와 재물의 유혹이 말씀을 막아 결실하지 못하게 합니다. 우리는 이 세 가지 모습이 모두 우리 안에 공존하고 있음을 솔직히 인정해야 합니다. 어느 날은 뜨겁고, 어느 날은 무감각하며, 어느 날은 염려에 잠식됩니다.

그러나 주님은 우리를 정죄하시기보다 좋은 땅으로 부르십니다. 좋은 땅은 완벽한 땅이 아니라, 말씀을 듣고 깨닫는 마음입니다. 듣는 것에서 멈추지 않고, 묵상하며 순종으로 이어지는 마음입니다. 그때 비로소 결실이 시작됩니다. 결실은 속도가 아니라 방향의 문제입니다. 백 배가 아니어도 좋습니다. 삼십 배라도 괜찮습니다. 중요한 것은 자라고 있다는 사실입니다.

이어지는 가라지의 비유는 또 다른 긴장을 보여줍니다. 좋은 씨를 뿌렸지만 원수가 와서 가라지를 덧뿌립니다. 종들은 당장 뽑아내고 싶어 하지만 주인은 추수 때까지 함께 자라게 두라고 말합니다. 이는 하나님의 인내를 드러냅니다. 우리는 빨리 판단하고 정리하고 싶어 하지만, 하나님은 시간을 통해 구별하십니다. 지금 보이는 모습이 전부가 아닙니다. 자라는 과정 속에서 드러나게 될 것입니다.

오늘 아침, 나는 어떤 땅입니까? 혹시 염려가 가시처럼 자라 말씀을 막고 있지는 않습니까? 혹시 즉각적인 감정에만 머물러 뿌리 내림을 게을리하고 있지는 않습니까? 주님은 오늘도 동일한 말씀의 씨를 뿌리고 계십니다. 우리의 역할은 마음을 갈아엎는 일입니다. 회개와 순종은 굳은 땅을 부드럽게 만드는 영적 경작입니다.

또한 우리는 가라지를 보며 조급해하지 않아야 합니다. 내 삶 속의 미성숙함, 공동체 안의 부족함을 보며 실망하기보다, 하나님이 일하실 시간을 신뢰해야 합니다. 추수는 우리의 일이 아니라 하나님의 일입니다. 우리의 몫은 오늘 주어진 말씀을 붙들고 성실히 자라는 것입니다.

말씀이 뿌리내린 자리에서 열매는 반드시 맺힙니다. 보이지 않는 땅속에서 이미 생명이 시작되었습니다. 오늘도 말씀을 듣고 깨닫는 좋은 땅이 되기를 기도합니다. 그리고 하나님의 인내를 닮아, 기다릴 줄 아는 믿음으로 하루를 시작합니다.

“But the seed sown on good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” (Matthew 13:23)

After a busy week, I arrived safely. Leading the Growing Church Conference for 46 pastors requires learning and rest to go together, and at the same time it must be a gathering filled with inspiration. Although I attend personally, each year this conference becomes a time to reexamine and reaffirm our church ministry. It is like laying down fertilizer for the coming year of pastoral work.

During the conference, I had hoped to send out a morning reflection, but since I was using my computer for the main presentation, I did not have the opportunity. My heart wanted to share the grace and inspiration I was receiving in real time, and I regret that I was not able to do so.

You may think your pastor seems busy, but more than events like this, a pastor should be busy because of the congregation.

I arrive at church before 9 a.m. and remain there throughout the day. Unless there is a specific visitation scheduled, I try to stay in the office. So whenever you come by the church, you are welcome to sit down and talk with me.

Starting next week, I plan to visit the businesses of our members. I will bring simple tea and light refreshments, so please feel free to welcome me comfortably. It does not have to be long—even a few minutes of conversation would be meaningful.

Today’s passage, through the Parable of the Sower and the Parable of the Weeds, shows us how the kingdom of God grows in our lives. Jesus explains that although the same seed is sown, the results differ because of the condition of the soil: the path, the rocky ground, the thorny ground, and the good soil. The issue is not the seed, but the heart. The Word has already been given to us. The important question is: what kind of soil am I?

The path represents a heart that hears but does not understand. The Word passes by without sinking in. The rocky ground receives the Word with immediate joy, but because it has no root, it falls away when trouble or persecution comes. The thorny ground allows worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth to choke the Word, preventing fruitfulness. We must honestly admit that all three conditions coexist within us. Some days we are passionate; some days we are numb; some days we are overwhelmed by anxiety.

Yet the Lord does not condemn us; He calls us to become good soil. Good soil is not perfect soil, but a heart that hears and understands the Word. It does not stop at hearing; it moves into meditation and obedience. Only then does fruit begin to grow. Fruitfulness is not about speed but about direction. It does not have to be a hundredfold. Thirtyfold is enough. What matters is that we are growing.

The Parable of the Weeds introduces another tension. Good seed is sown, but an enemy comes and sows weeds among the wheat. The servants want to pull them out immediately, but the master tells them to let both grow together until the harvest. This reveals God’s patience. We want to judge and clean things up quickly, but God distinguishes in His time. What we see now is not the whole story. The truth will be revealed in the process of growth.

This morning, what kind of soil am I? Are worries growing like thorns and choking the Word? Am I remaining at the level of emotion without putting down deep roots? The Lord continues to sow the same Word today. Our role is to cultivate the soil of our hearts. Repentance and obedience soften hardened ground.

We must also resist impatience when we see weeds. Rather than being discouraged by immaturity in our lives or shortcomings in our community, we are called to trust God’s timing. The harvest belongs to Him. Our part is to hold onto the Word given to us today and grow faithfully.

Where the Word takes root, fruit will surely come. Beneath the surface, life has already begun. Today, I pray that we may become good soil that hears and understands the Word. And like God, may we begin this day with patient faith that knows how to wait.
