화요일 부터 Gathering of the Spiritual Leader 모임에 참석하고 있습니다. 매년 초에 연회에서 연회 모든 목회자들을 한 곳에 모여서 성경공부, 강연, 워크샵과 함께 교제를 나누는 시간을 갖습니다. 매년 Asiloma conference ground에서 대략 250명의 목회자가 모입니다.

모일때마다 연회는 올해 파송해야할 교회를 오픈하고 관심있으면 신청하라는 이메일을 보냅니다. 다들 한 자리에서 받는 이 이메일은 우리를 또다른 모험으로 몰고갑니다. 상관없는 일처럼 느껴지지만, 모이면 이번에 떠나는 목회자가 어떻게 된건지 묻고, 새로 파송될 목회자가 누가 될지에 대해서 이야기합니다. 간단해 보이는 파송과정이지만, 사실 복잡하고 한자리에 모인이들에게는 큰 파장을 가져다 줍니다.

연합감리교회 250년 역사속에서 매년 이루어진 이 과정은 우리를 두려움으로 또는 기대로 그리고 궁금함으로 몰고갑니다.

제자들이 예수를 따라 어디든지 갈 기세로 따릅니다. 그런데 오늘 예수님의 말씀은 제자들을 숙연하게 합니다. "양을 이리가운데로 보내는 것 같다..." 만만치 않은 제자들의 삶을 드러내는 예수님의 숨기지 않는 말씀입니다.

이번 모임에서 주제는 트라우마에 대한 이야기였습니다. 트라우마가 다음세대까지 연결된다는 이야기속에서 우리들은 어쩔수 없이 우리삶으로 전해지는 상처와 아픔들이 있다는 것을 고백하며 삶을 다독이며 이틀을 함께 보냈습니다. 만만치 않은 삶, 만만치 않은 목회, 만만치 않은 신앙생활, 만만치 않은 사업장, 이런 어려움속에서 우리들이 눈여겨 보는 한가지는 그럼에도 불구하고 함께하는 하나님의 동행하심입니다.

예수님은 제자들에게 승리의 삶을 보장한다고 말씀하지 않으십니다. 그리고 만만치 않은 현실에 뱀처럼 슬기롭고, 비들기 처럼 순진하라고 말씀하십니다. 여기서 순진하라는 착하면서 잘 속는 순진한 사람을 뜻하는 것이 아니라, "세상에 물들지 않는 사람"으로 살라는 뜻입니다.

시간은 가고, 삶은 달라지고, 상처와 아픔도 사라지겠지만, 그것의 흔적은 여전히 우리안에 있을 수 있습니다. 하지만, 그것이 우리의 삶은 망치도록 두면 안되고, 만만치 않은 삶이 우리에게 주어졌고, 우리에게 주어진 삶을 그럼에도 불구하고 성실하게 살아내는 힘을 가지는 것! 이것이 우리들이 고백하는 예수와 동행하는 삶이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

봄은 깊어가고 곧 꽃은 여름을 재촉할것 같습니다. 분주하고 할일이 많으니 함께 힘을 냈으면 좋겠습니다.

묵상

여전히 바뀌지 않는 현실에 낙심보다는 힘을 내서 이겨내려고 눈을 크게 뜨고, 마음을 단단히 하고, 주먹을 불끈 쥐는 것이 신앙의 힘입니다.

1. 열린교회가 성숙한 신앙공동체가 될수 있도록 기도해주세요. 처음은 느슨해 보이지만, 우리안에는 무엇보다도 단단한 관계와 신앙의 힘이 있습니다.

Since Tuesday, I have been attending the Gathering of the Spiritual Leaders. Every year at the beginning of the year, our Annual Conference gathers all clergy in one place for Bible study, lectures, workshops, and shared fellowship. About 250 pastors come together annually at the Asilomar Conference Grounds.

Each time we gather, the Conference sends out an email listing the churches that will be open for appointment in the coming year, inviting those who are interested to apply. Receiving this email together, in the same room, quietly pulls us into another season of discernment and adventure. At first, it feels distant and unrelated to our own lives.

Yet once we are together, conversations naturally begin to turn. We ask what happened to the pastor who is leaving, and we wonder who might be appointed next. The appointment process may appear simple on the surface, but in reality it is complex. For those gathered in one place, it creates a ripple effect that touches fear, hope, and uncertainty all at once.

For nearly 250 years in the history of the United Methodist Church, this process has unfolded year after year. Each time, it draws us into a space shaped by anticipation, anxiety, and curiosity.

The disciples followed Jesus with a readiness to go wherever he led. Yet Jesus’ words in today’s passage bring a sobering clarity: “I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves.” Jesus does not soften the reality of discipleship. He speaks plainly about the difficulty of the life to which they are being sent.

The theme of this year’s gathering was trauma. As we reflected on how trauma can be passed down even to the next generation, we found ourselves acknowledging wounds and pains that have reached us through our own lives, often without our choosing. Over two days, we shared these stories, holding one another’s lives with gentleness and care.

Life is not easy. Ministry is not easy. Faith is not easy. Running a business is not easy. Yet in the midst of these realities, one truth continues to draw our attention: the presence of God who walks with us nonetheless.

Jesus does not promise the disciples a life of visible victory. Instead, in the face of harsh realities, he calls them to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Here, “innocent” does not mean naïve or easily deceived. It means living as people who are not shaped or stained by the ways of the world.

Time passes, and life changes. Some wounds may fade, yet their traces often remain within us. Still, we must not allow those traces to destroy our lives. We have been given a life that is not easy, and yet we are called to live it faithfully. To carry the strength to live well despite everything—this, I believe, is what it means to walk with Jesus.

Spring is deepening, and soon the flowers will urge us toward summer. Life feels busy, and there is much to do. In this season, I hope we can gather our strength together and keep moving forward.

Meditation

Faith is not pretending that reality has changed. It is opening our eyes wide, strengthening our hearts, and clenching our fists—not in anger, but in resolve—to face an unchanging reality with courage rather than despair.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Please pray that Yeolin Church may grow into a mature community of faith. Though we may appear relaxed on the surface, within us there is a deep strength rooted in relationships and in faith.

2. Please also pray for the calling of a new pastor, and for our church school, youth ministry, young adult ministry, and adult ministries.
