또 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따르지 않는 사람도 내게 적합하지 않다.(마10:38)

오늘 본문에서 십자가를 지고는 우리 민족에게 특별한 구절입니다. 선교사들이 복음을 전하기 위해 조선에 왔을때 선교사들이 왔다는 소식이 기독교 조선인들이 찾아왔는데 나무십자가를 등에 지고 왔다는 선교사들의 증언은 전설처럼 전해져 내려오는 이야기입니다. "자기 십자가를 지고"를 진짜 십자가를 등짐처럼 지고 다니는 것으로 이해한것이죠.

이렇게 순진한 기독교인들이 세계최대의 교회와 기독교공동체를 형성했고, 가장 많은 선교사들을 파송했으니 우리는 정말로 축복받은 민족들입니다.

예수님은 “내가 세상에 평화를 주러 온 줄로 생각하지 말라”고 말씀하시며, 오히려 분열과 갈등을 언급하십니다. 이는 예수님이 폭력이나 불화를 조장하신다는 뜻이 아니라, 그분을 따르는 삶이 결코 중립적일 수 없음을 드러내는 말씀입니다

여전히 우리들이 십자가를 진다는 것을 오해했던 초기 기독교인들처럼 지금도 기독교를 오해하는 경우를 보게됩니다. 예수님은 사랑의 질서를 새롭게 정의하십니다. 부모나 자녀보다 예수님을 더 사랑하라는 말씀은 가족을 가볍게 여기라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 오히려 모든 사랑의 기준이 예수님께로 재정렬되어야 함을 말합니다. 예수님보다 앞서는 사랑은 결국 우리를 붙잡고 하나님 나라를 향한 걸음을 멈추게 만들 수 있습니다. 주님은 우리가 소중히 여기는 것들을 내려놓으라고 강요하시기보다, 무엇이 우리의 최종 기준인지 정직하게 묻고 계십니다.

“자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따르라”는 말씀은 고난을 미화하라는 요청이 아닙니다. 십자가는 선택의 결과이며, 예수님의 길에 동참할 때 피할 수 없는 책임입니다. 예수님은 생명을 얻기 위해 생명을 잃는 역설을 말씀하십니다. 이는 자기부정이 아니라, 하나님 안에서 참된 생명이 무엇인지를 배우는 길입니다. 오늘 우리가 붙들고 있는 ‘내 생명’은 무엇이며, 주님께 맡기지 못하고 있는 것은 무엇인지 돌아보게 합니다.

본문의 마지막은 작은 환대에 대한 약속으로 마무리됩니다. 선지자를 선지자로, 의인을 의인으로 대하는 마음, 그리고 제자의 이름으로 건네는 차가운 물 한 그릇. 예수님은 크고 위대한 헌신만이 아니라, 작고 조용한 순종 또한 결코 잊히지 않는다고 말씀하십니다. 주님을 향한 선택은 거창한 결단뿐 아니라, 오늘 하루의 태도와 관계 속에서도 드러납니다.

예수를 따른다는 것, 믿는다는 것, 그리고 교회를 다닌다는 것은 간단한일이 아닙니다. 종교적 선택으로 나와 가장 잘 맞아서 교회를 나오는 것이 아니라, 예수가 가르치고, 전하는 방향에 삶이 살아져야합니다. 쉽지 않은 결단으로 우리가 함께 교회공동체에 어울려산다는 것을 기억하시기 바랍니다.

“And whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me.”(Matthew 10:38)

In today’s passage, the phrase “to take up one’s cross” carries a special resonance for our people. When missionaries first came to Joseon to proclaim the gospel, Christian believers reportedly went out to meet them carrying wooden crosses on their backs. Missionaries later testified to this scene, and the story has been passed down almost like a legend. Those early believers understood “taking up one’s cross” quite literally, as if it meant carrying an actual cross on one’s back like a burden.

From such sincere and simple faith emerged one of the largest churches and Christian communities in the world, and a people who have sent out countless missionaries across the globe. In that sense, we truly are a people who have been richly blessed.

Jesus says, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth,” and instead speaks of division and conflict. This does not mean that Jesus promotes violence or discord. Rather, He reveals that following Him can never be a neutral choice. To follow Jesus is to have one’s life decisively reoriented, and that reorientation can create tension even within the closest human relationships.

Even today, just as some early believers misunderstood what it meant to take up the cross, we still see many misunderstandings about Christianity. Jesus redefines the order of love. To love Him more than one’s parents or children does not mean to devalue family. Instead, it means that all love must be reordered around Him as its ultimate reference point. Any love that comes before Jesus can eventually hold us back and stop us from moving toward the kingdom of God. The Lord does not force us to abandon what we cherish; rather, He asks us honestly what our final standard truly is.

When Jesus says, “Take up your cross and follow me,” He is not asking us to glorify suffering. The cross is the consequence of a choice, the responsibility that comes with participating in the way of Jesus. He speaks of the paradox of losing one’s life in order to find it. This is not self-negation for its own sake, but a path through which we learn what true life is in God. It invites us to reflect on what we are clinging to as “our life,” and what we still cannot entrust to the Lord.

The passage concludes with a promise about small acts of welcome. Receiving a prophet as a prophet, a righteous person as a righteous person, and even offering a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple—Jesus assures us that not even these quiet and seemingly insignificant acts will be forgotten. Our choice to follow the Lord is revealed not only in dramatic decisions, but also in our daily attitudes and relationships.

To follow Jesus, to believe, and to belong to the church are not simple matters. We do not come to church merely because it suits us as a religious preference. Rather, our lives must be shaped by the direction Jesus teaches and proclaims. This is not an easy commitment. Remember that we are called to live together as a church community through this shared and often costly decision.
