요한일서의 마지막 단락인 5장 13–21절은, 신앙의 결론이자 초대입니다. 요한은 이 편지를 마치며 더 이상 새로운 논증을 펼치지 않습니다. 대신 이미 믿는 이들에게, 이미 받은 것을 확신하고, 분별하며, 지켜내라고 권면합니다.

요한은 이렇게 말합니다.“내가 하나님의 아들의 이름을 믿는 너희에게 이것을 쓴 것은, 너희로 하여금 영생이 있음을 알게 하려 함이라.”여기서 중요한 단어는 “있음을”입니다. 영생은 미래에 조건부로 주어질 보상이 아니라, 이미 시작된 하나님의 생명입니다. 요한에게 믿음은 불안한 기대가 아니라, 분명한 인식입니다. 우리는 “될지도 모른다”가 아니라, “이미 알고 있다”는 자리에서 신앙을 살아갑니다.

이 확신은 기도로 이어집니다. 요한은 우리가 하나님 앞에서 담대함을 가질 수 있다고 말합니다. 하나님의 뜻대로 구할 때, 하나님은 들으신다는 확신입니다. 기도는 설득이 아니라 신뢰의 표현입니다. 하나님을 바꾸려는 시도가 아니라, 하나님의 뜻 안에 자신을 놓는 행위입니다. 그래서 요한은 죄를 짓는 형제를 위한 중보기도까지 말합니다. 신앙은 개인의 경건에 머물지 않고, 공동체를 살리는 책임으로 확장됩니다.

이어 요한은 매우 단호한 언어를 사용합니다.“하나님께로부터 난 자는 죄 가운데 거하지 않는다.”이는 완전무결함을 뜻하지 않습니다. 오히려 삶의 방향에 대한 선언입니다. 하나님의 생명이 우리 안에 있다는 것은, 죄가 더 이상 우리의 주인이 아니라는 뜻입니다. 우리는 넘어질 수 있지만, 그 자리에 머물지는 않습니다. 하나님께 속한 사람은 결국 하나님께로 돌아오게 되어 있습니다.

마지막으로 요한은 뜻밖의 경고로 편지를 맺습니다.“자녀들아, 너희 자신을 지켜 우상에게서 멀리하라.”우상은 단지 나무나 돌로 만든 신상이 아닙니다. 하나님보다 더 의지하게 되는 것, 하나님보다 더 확실하다고 믿는 모든 것이 우상이 될 수 있습니다. 심지어 신앙의 언어를 사용하면서도, 살아 계신 하나님 대신 자기 확신, 제도, 성공, 안전을 붙드는 순간, 우리는 우상을 섬기게 됩니다.

요한일서는 이렇게 끝납니다. 긴 설명도, 장황한 결론도 없습니다. 다만 한 가지 분명한 요청만 남습니다.이미 받은 생명을, 끝까지 하나님 안에서 지켜내라.

묵상

영생을 얻는다는 의미는 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요? 우리가 영생을 얻었다고 고백할때 이 의미는 무엇일까요?

The final section of 1 John, chapter 5:13–21, is both the conclusion of faith and an invitation. As John brings this letter to a close, he does not introduce any new arguments. Instead, he exhorts those who already believe to be confident in what they have already received, to discern rightly, and to guard it faithfully.

John says this:“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”The key word here is “have.” Eternal life is not a conditional reward to be granted in the future; it is the life of God that has already begun. For John, faith is not an anxious hope but a clear conviction. We live our faith not in the posture of “maybe someday,” but from the assurance of “we already know.”

This assurance leads naturally into prayer. John says that we can have confidence before God—confidence that when we ask according to God’s will, God hears us. Prayer is not an act of persuasion but an expression of trust. It is not an attempt to change God, but an act of placing ourselves within God’s will. That is why John even speaks of intercessory prayer for a brother or sister who sins. Faith does not remain at the level of personal piety; it expands into a responsibility to sustain and restore the community.

John then speaks with striking clarity:“Those who are born of God do not continue in sin.”This does not mean moral perfection. Rather, it is a declaration about the direction of one’s life. To have God’s life within us means that sin is no longer our master. We may stumble, but we do not remain where we fall. Those who belong to God are, in the end, drawn back to God.

Finally, John closes his letter with an unexpected warning:“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”An idol is not only something carved from wood or stone. Anything we rely on more than God, anything we trust as more certain than God, can become an idol. Even while using religious language, when we cling to self-confidence, systems, success, or security instead of the living God, we find ourselves serving idols.

This is how 1 John ends. There is no lengthy explanation, no elaborate conclusion. Only one clear request remains:Guard the life you have already received, and remain in God to the end.

What does it truly mean to say that we have received eternal life?When we confess that we have eternal life, what are we really proclaiming about our faith and our way of living?

1. Today is already Friday. Time in 2026 seems to be passing like an arrow. Tomorrow, we will gather for early morning prayer. It is a time to pray with our whole hearts. I invite you to join together in prayer in that sacred space.
