바울은 디모데에게 혈기 정욕을 피하고 깨끗한 그릇이 되라고 부탁합니다. 젊은 청년 사역자를 대하는 바울의 "귀한 그릇"이라는 단어로 어디로 삶을 정하고 살아야 하는 지를 보여줍니다.

지난 주일 북가주한인연합감리교회 코커스 회장으로 선출되었습니다. 말이 선출이지 북가주에 온 순서대로 2년식 이 책임을 맡게되어 있습니다. 그러니 순서가 되서 그 책임을 하게 된것이죠. 그런데 회칙을 변경하면서 이전까지는 주로 한인목회자들로 구성되던 코커스조직을 전체 타인종 목회자로 섬기는 한인목회자들로 확대했습니다. 저희 연회에 현역으로 사역하는 한인목회자가 49명이라고 하니까 한인목회자 12명에 비해 크게 늘어났고, 막내인 제가 회장이 될정도니 지금까지 (제가 2015년에 처음 한인교회에서 목회를 시작했으니) 근 10년동안 새로운 사역자가 한인목회자로 파송되지 않았으니 서기나 다른 임원들을 다시 어른 목사님들이 해야할 상황이 되었으니 서둘러 조직을 통합하게 되었습니다.

이말은 저는 아직도 가장 젊은 목사로 평가받는 나름 젊음(?!)을 오랫동안 즐기며 사역하는 목회자라는 의미입니다.

나름 연합행사가 꽤 있는 상황에서 갑작스러운 통합이라는 변화는 이런 저런 일을 하기 위해서는 고민해야할 것들이 많은 것 같습니다. 젊은 목사말 따라줄지 그것도 잘 모르겠고, 변화되고 통합된 코커스의 역할이 건강하게 자리하기 위해서 어떤 노력이 필요할텐데, 처음이다 보니까 어느 방향으로 준비해야할지도 잘 모르겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.

그래도 시간을 마주하면 그 일들은 해낼수있겠죠. 그만큼 기도가 필요하고 용기도 필요하고 부지런함이 필요할것 같습니다.

이런 저에게 바울이 혈기를 세우지 말고 무익한 것을 피하라는 오늘 말씀은 크게 와닿습니다. 가끔 쓰지 않아야 할 힘을 쓰는 경우를 봅니다. 다른 교회에서 일어나는 문제들도 보면 쓰지 말아야할 힘을 쓰다보니 생기는 어려움을 목격할때가 있습니다. 정말 중요한 것은 뒷전이고 엉뚱한 것에 힘을 빼는 순간에 바울이 걱정한것 처럼 무익한 것에 다들 메댈려있을 수 있습니다.

개인적으로 연합사역은 개교회주의에서 벗어나 공교회성을 중요하게 여기는 행위입니다. 북가주 한인연합감리교회가 오랫동안 연합사역을 이어온 이유는 공교회성에 무게를 두고 함께 연합한다는 확신이 있습니다. 개교회사역에 소홀하면 어떻게 할까? 걱정하는데 공교회성을 잘 세워가는 교회는 개교회도 건강해집니다. 오히려 교회는 흩어지면서 교회의 힘을 잃어가고 있다는 것을 우리는 기억해야합니다.

가장 젊은 목사가 순서대로 코커스 회장이 되었으니 이제 젊은 목사가 부탁하면 어른 목사님들이 일을 해야합니다. 설마 뒷짐지고 알아서 해라! 그러지 않겠죠. 바울이 디모데를 대하는 것과 같은 기대를 가득 안고 최선을 다해 해보겠습니다.

지금이 가장 젊은 시간을 보내고 있는 것입니다. 그러니 지금 최선을 다해 삶을 하나님께 드리려고 노력하세요!

1. 질병가운데 있는 분들을 위해서 기도해주세요. 소식을 통해 아픈 분들 예준이, 김숙희 집사님이외에 함께 나누지 않은 분들도 있어요. 그분들을 위해서 기도해주세요.

2. 겨울을 맞이하면서 월동준비를 해야합니다. 파티오에 바람막이를 설치하고 난로 점검을 해야하고 무엇보다 비가올경우를 대비해서 하수배관을 손을 봐야할것 같습니다. 위해서 기도해주세요

Paul urges Timothy to flee youthful passions and to become a clean vessel—a person set apart and useful for the Master's purposes. The image of a "vessel for honor" reveals the kind of direction and commitment a young servant of God should pursue in life and ministry.

Reflection

This past Sunday, I was elected president of the Northern California Korean United Methodist Church Caucus. To be precise, "elected" might not be the right word—leadership is passed on by order of seniority, and it was simply my turn to take on the responsibility.

However, this year marks a meaningful transition. The caucus, which was previously composed mostly of Korean-speaking pastors, has now expanded to include Korean pastors who serve in multicultural and non-Korean congregations across our conference. Out of 49 active Korean pastors in our conference, only 12 currently serve Korean congregations. That number alone shows how much ministry settings have changed.

As the youngest pastor—one who still holds onto what little remains of youth—I suddenly find myself in a position of leadership. Since no new Korean-speaking pastors have been appointed for nearly a decade (I myself began ministry in 2015), many senior pastors have had to resume officer roles again. This has accelerated our integration process and required us to rethink our structure.

There are many things to consider: Will senior pastors listen to a younger leader? What direction should the newly unified caucus take to serve both Korean and cross-cultural ministries faithfully? How can we embody unity and strength amid diversity? These questions remind me that prayer, courage, and diligence are more necessary than ever.

Paul's exhortation to Timothy—"avoid foolish and ignorant disputes"—feels deeply personal to me right now. Too often, I've seen people (including myself) waste strength in battles that shouldn't be fought. Churches sometimes suffer not because of a lack of energy, but because that energy is misdirected toward what is unprofitable. When we pour our passion into the wrong things, we lose sight of what truly matters.

For me, ministry at the caucus level represents a commitment to the connectional and catholic nature of the Church—a reminder that the Church is not a collection of isolated congregations but a shared body of Christ. When we strengthen the wider connection, local churches also become healthier. Division and isolation, on the other hand, only weaken the Church's witness.

So now, as the youngest pastor stepping into this role, I hope the senior pastors will not step back and say, "You handle it yourself," but rather join together with the same hopeful expectation Paul had for Timothy. With that hope, I will do my best—not relying on youthful energy alone, but on the grace and wisdom of God.

You are living the youngest season of your life right now. So give your best effort to dedicate your life wholly to God in this very moment.

• Please pray for those who are sick—including Yejun, Deaconess Kim Sook-Hee, and others whose names we may not yet know. May God's healing hand comfort and restore them.

• As we prepare for winter, please pray for the safety and readiness of our church facilities—for the installation of patio wind barriers, heater inspections, and drainage maintenance in preparation for the coming rain.
