“2 Timothy 3:10–17, November 6, 2025 (Thursday)”, 디모데후서 3 : 10~17, 2025.11.06 (목)

어제 바람과 비가 제법이었습니다. 겨울로 가는 문턱에 늘 찾아오는 비바람이었던것 같습니다. 오전에 성경공부하고 서킷미팅에 다녀왔습니다. 제가 속한 서킷은 버클리, 오클랜드, 알바니에 있는 교회를 섬기는 목회자들입니다. 자주는 아니고 두달이나 세달에 한번 만나서 직접 구운 쿠키와 저를 배려한 두부스콘을 나눠먹으면서 교회와 개인적인 이야기들을 나눕니다. 그중에 눈이 보이지 않는 목사님이 계십니다. 택시를 타고 오가시는데 보이지 않으니 듣는 것에 탁월함을 보여줍니다. 아마 완전히 다 안보이는 것은 아니고 희미하게 형체를 보실수 있는 것 같은데 목회에 열심을 다합니다.

부족한것이 많아도 부르심에 나서는 것을 막지 못합니다. 아무리 육신에 결함이 있다고 해서 예수 그리스도를 전하고 싶은 그 마음을 막지는 못하는 것 같습니다. 대부분 농담을 잘하는 영어로 반은 알아듣지 못하지만, 진지하게 이야기하는 이 분의 태도에 깊은 감명을 받았습니다. 내년 미팅을 계획하고는 모임을 끝내고 교회로 돌아왔습니다.

저녁에 모이는 성경공부에 눈이 보이지 않는 동네분이 함께합니다. 지헌용집사님이 사시는 아파트에 함께사시는 분인데 아마 질병으로 눈이 보이지 않게 된것 같습니다. 이야기를 나누다보니 제가 잘 알던 분들과 가깝게 지내셨었고, 몇년전부터 완전히 눈이 보이질 않으신것 같습니다. 이 분은 그래도 "늘 감사한것" 투성이라고, 입에 달고 산다고 이야기하십니다. 감사할것이 없고 불편할것 투성이인 분 같은데 감사하다고 합니다. 매주 오실때마다 종이에 성경공부이후에 정리한 내용과 저에게 쓰는 편지를 써서 가져오십니다. 편지의 내용들은 하나님께 감사한것으로 가득차있습니다.

삶은 완전히 채워져야 감사한것이 아닌것 같습니다. 바울도 디도데에게 보내는 두번째 서신인 디모데후서는 로마에서 순교를 앞두고 감옥에서 쓴 편지입니다. 목회서신이라는 이름을 붙이지만, 사실 바울이 디모데에게 보내는 유언과도 같습니다. 이런 바울의 입에서 "오직 말씀을 붙들라"는 당부가 디모데에게 전해집니다. 박해가 심해지는 상황에, 교회안에 거짓된 가르침을 가르치는 이단들이 득새할때 그것을 바로 잡을 디모데가 말씀을 붙들고 올바른 교회의 가르침을 잘 전하라는 의미입니다.

상황은 진실을 흔들어 놓을 수 없습니다. 아무리 어렵고 힘들어도 우리가 전하고 나눌 진리는 달라지지 않는다는 것입니다. 교회가 어려워도 복음을 전하는 일은 변함이 없고, 사람들이 교회를 외면해도 교회가 지녀야할 세상의 빛과 같은 공동체로 세워지는 것은 포기할 수 없습니다.

상황이 나쁘고 환경이 좋지 않고 시기가 안맞는다는 것은 복음을 전하는 진리와는 상관없다는 것입니다. 그러니 하나님이 역사하시는 것은 언제나 어디서나 역사하신다는 사실을 기억하시기 바랍니다.

2. 2025년 이제 두달 남았습니다. 남은 두달동안 하나님의 은혜와 사랑을 깊이 경험하는 시간을 위해 기도합니다.

Yesterday, we had quite a bit of wind and rain—the kind that always comes as winter approaches. In the morning, I led our Bible study and then attended a circuit meeting. The circuit I belong to includes pastors who serve churches in Berkeley, Oakland, and Albany. We don't meet often—perhaps once every two or three months—but when we do, we gather over freshly baked cookies and tofu scones (thoughtfully prepared for me) to share about our ministries and personal lives.

Among us is a pastor who is visually impaired. She travels by taxi, and though her vision is limited, her hearing is remarkably acute. I believe she can still make out shapes faintly, but she continues to serve the church with all his heart. Even with these physical limitations, she hasn't let them stop him from proclaiming Jesus Christ. Though I often miss half of the English jokes around the table, I was deeply moved by her sincerity and dedication. After planning next year's meetings, I returned to church.

In the evening Bible study, I met another person who cannot see. She lives in the same apartment complex as Deacon Ji Heon-yong and lost his sight due to illness. As we talked, I discovered we had mutual acquaintances, and learned that she has been completely blind for several years now. Yet she repeatedly says that his life is "full of things to be thankful for." Though his situation seems filled with hardship and inconvenience, gratitude flows constantly from his lips. Every week she brings handwritten notes—reflections from our study and letters to me—filled with thanksgiving to God.

It reminds me that gratitude doesn't arise only when life is full or comfortable. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy, written from prison in Rome before his martyrdom, is both a pastoral letter and a spiritual testament. From that dark place, Paul tells Timothy, "Hold fast to the Word." As persecution grew and false teachings spread within the church, Paul urged Timothy to cling to Scripture and faithfully teach sound doctrine.

Circumstances cannot shake the truth. No matter how difficult things become, the gospel we share remains unchanged. Even when the church struggles, the mission to proclaim the good news continues. Even when people turn away from the church, we must not abandon our calling to be the light of the world.

Difficult times, harsh conditions, or trying seasons—none of these can stop the truth of the gospel. Let us remember that God works at all times and in every place.
