2 Timothy 4:1–8, November 7, 2025 (Friday), 디모데후서 4 : 1~8, 2025.11.07 (금)

어제 라모린다에있는 한 개발회사 사람이 찾아왔습니다. 전에 오린다 시티에 개발부서에 일했던 분인데 지금은 한 회사에 들어가서 개발업을 하는 분입니다. 교회옆에 있는 집들이 원래 교회땅이었고 자기가 오린다시에서 근무할때 Housing Element로 개발한 곳이라고 소개합니다.

교회 뒤에 땅에 45집을 지을 수 있어서 타운하우스 개발을 하고 싶다고 합니다. 땅값으로 포스트잇에 이정도 줄수 있다고 적어와서는 저에게 내밀었습니다. 그래서 오늘은 케쥬얼한 미팅이고 저회는 교회의 절차가 필요하다고 이야기를 나누었습니다. 연회에서 허락을 받아야 하고 교인들과도 공청회를 해야하고 최종적으로 교인총회를 거쳐야하는 과정을 설명하고는 제가 역제안을 했습니다.

땅을 팔지 않고 리스를 오랫동안 주면 땅을 살 돈을 아낄수 있지 않겠냐? 우리가 월세를 받지도 않겠다. 가능하면 교회옆에 "커뮤니티 센터"를 개발단계에서 설계를 해볼 수 있겠냐? 커뮤니티 센터는 우리가 운영하고 그 안에 Gym과 예배당, 어린이집과 카페 이 두개는 지금 있는 건물과 함께 설계해서 계획을 세워볼 수 있냐라고 물었습니다. 어린이집은 오린다 시에서 원하는 계획이면서 동시에 오린다지역에 어린이집이 모자르다고 하니 지역사회를 위해 필요하고, 커뮤니티 센터 자체가 지금 하우징을 추가하는 것에 동네분들이 우려하는 것이 화재시에 피난처가 필요하니 피난처 역할로 하면 개발사도 세금혜택도 있지 않겠냐고 이야기를 나누었습니다. 물론 저의 개인적인 생각이고 교회에 물어야 구체적으로 결정할 수 있다는 이야기로 마무리했습니다.

이야기중에 오클랜드 빌딩을 매각중이라고 했더니, 위치를 듣더니 자기네가 한번 보고 싶다고 해서 다음주 금요일에 보기로 했습니다.

잘 써보지 못한 영어라 요즘 부동산이나 재산관련되 영어를 나름 공부합니다. 한편으로는 교회에 좋은 파트너로 이를 대신할 분이 필요하지 않을까?라는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래야 더 전문적으로 교회공동체에 도움이 되겠다는 생각입니다.

그리고 목사로서 이런 기회는 좋은 사인이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 우리가 일부러 하지 않아도 교회는 외부적으로 변화의 기회가 주어지고 있습니다. 외부적인 변화도 있지만 내부적인 변화도 주어지고 있습니다. 교회라는 곳이 늘 긍정적인 영향만 있겠습니까? 부정적인 자극도 있을 것이고 이런 고민을 지내면서 교회는 성숙해지거나 쇠퇴할 수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다.

자극을 긍정적으로 소화하는 방법은 단순히 즐기라가 아니라, 이 순간 우리를 하나님이 어떻게 세밀하게 이끌어가시는지를 확인하고 응답하는 것에 잘 훈련된 교회공동체는 그 시간을 풍요롭게 만들어낼 기회를 세워갈 수 있을 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다.

제가 늘 말씀드리지만, 초대교회부터 지금까지 교회는 늘 어렵고 힘들었습니다. 예민하게 하나님의 이끄심을 확인하며 노력한 교회와 그렇지 않은 교회가 있었고, 이런 의미에서 열린교회는 유기적으로 잘 반응하는 신앙공동체가 되기를 바라는게 저의 생각입니다.

바울은 하나님의 이끄심을 잘 확인하기 위해서 "끝까지 신실하게 달려가자"라는 권면을 디모데에게 남깁니다. 어떤 기술도 특별한것도 없습니다. 늘 신실하게 지치지 말고 달려가라! 이 단순한 권면에는 여러가지 복잡하고 어려운 것들이 몰아쳐도 그 중심안에 있는 신실함을 잊지 않으면 든든히 함께하시는 하나님의 손길을 고백하게 될것이라는 뜻입니다.

우리에게 주어진 사명을 우리가 생각한것보다 크고 신실해야 든든히 주님과 동행하며 이루어갈 수 있습니다. 지금까지 살아온 삶의 궤적에서 잠깐 멈춰서서 새로운 신앙의 삶의 여정을 기대해보시고 꿈꿔보시기 바랍니다. 바울은 곧 죽음이라는 절벽과도 같은 막막함에 처해있어도 자신이 아닌 디모데를 통해서 이루어가실 하나님의 뜻을 기대하며 편지를 씁니다. 이것을 기억하는 하루가 되시기를 바랍니다.

Reflection

Yesterday, someone from a development company in La Morinda came to visit me. He previously worked in the City of Orinda's development department and is now with a private development company. He introduced himself by explaining that the houses next to our church were originally part of the church's land, and that he had been involved in developing that area when he worked on the city's Housing Element project.

He said that approximately 45 homes could be built on the land behind the church, and that he was interested in developing it into townhouses. He even wrote a figure on a Post-it note and handed it to me, indicating how much they could pay for the land.

I told him that this was just an informal meeting and that our church has an established process for such decisions. I explained that any proposal would require approval from the Annual Conference, a public hearing with our congregation, and finally a church-wide vote. Then I offered a counter-proposal.

I suggested that instead of selling the land, we might consider a long-term lease so the developer could save the capital needed to purchase the land. I said, "We won't even charge monthly rent. But would you consider including a community center in your development plan?"

I explained that we would like to operate the community center ourselves, and that it could include a gym, a worship hall, a daycare center, and a café—all integrated with our current church building. The daycare would address Orinda's existing needs, as the city has frequently mentioned the shortage of childcare facilities.

I also suggested that if the community center could serve as an emergency shelter during wildfires, it would benefit the local community and could even provide tax incentives for the developer. Of course, I emphasized that these were just my initial thoughts—the final decision would depend on the church's collective discernment.

During our conversation, I mentioned that we are in the process of selling our Oakland property. When he heard the location, he said his company would be interested in viewing it. We scheduled a visit for next Friday.

I realize that my English isn't always adequate for these kinds of property or development discussions, so lately I've been studying real estate vocabulary and related terminology. At the same time, I've been thinking that perhaps the church needs a trusted professional partner to handle these matters—someone who can help us navigate them more effectively and serve the church community wisely.

As a pastor, I can't help but see this as an encouraging sign. Even without our initiative, God seems to be providing the church with opportunities for transformation from unexpected sources. And beyond those external changes, I sense that internal transformation is also taking place.

Of course, not every change brings comfort. Some transitions challenge us or stretch our limits. Yet when the church learns to respond faithfully to both encouragement and tension—discerning how God is carefully leading us through each moment—those very moments can become opportunities for spiritual growth and renewal.

From the early church until now, God's people have always faced hardship and challenge. The difference has always been whether a community could perceive and follow God's guidance in the midst of it. That's why I hope Yeolin Church will continue to grow as a living, responsive community of faith—one that discerns God's movement and responds with faith and courage.

Paul's final words to Timothy carry this message:

"Be faithful to the end."

There is no secret formula or special technique—only this: keep walking faithfully and do not lose heart. Even when life feels complicated or overwhelming, if we maintain the simple faithfulness at the center of our calling, we will find ourselves upheld by God's steadfast hand.

The mission entrusted to us is larger and more enduring than we may imagine. So perhaps this is the moment to pause, look back at the path we've walked, and look forward with renewed hope—imagining what God might yet accomplish in and through us.

Even when Paul stood at the precipice of death, he wrote not of despair but of expectation—believing that God's work would continue through Timothy. May we remember this today.

Let us pray that Yeolin Church will remain faithful to its mission—that we will earnestly discern God's calling and live it out fully as one body in Christ.

Please also pray for the preparation of our 2026 ministry plan—that we may finish 2025 well and begin the new year with renewed vision and faith.
