여호수아는, 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하신 대로, 모든 땅을 점령하고, 그것을 이스라엘 지파의 구분을 따라 유산으로 주었다.그래서 그 땅에서는 전쟁이 그치고, 사람들은 평화를 누리게 되었다. (여호수아 11:23)

제가 매년 이맘때 갖는 피정은 내년 목회계획을 준비하고, 예배위원과, 속회을 결정하고 구상하며 보내는 시간입니다. 보통 한주를 멀리가서 혼자 있다 오곤하는데 이번에는 빠르게 다가온 시간에 교회에서 혼자 지내보려고 합니다. 물론 늘 혼자였는데 저녁늦게까지 있을생각이라는 뜻입니다.

이 시간은 저에게 깊은 고민을 안겨다 줍니다. 아마 다양한 목소리로 일년간 저에게 이런 저런 이야기를 하신 것들을 기억하고 내년에는 어떻게 할지 고민하기도 하고, 앞으로 교회에 필요한 것들이 무엇인지를 살피는 것도 꽤 중요하게 여겨지니 나름 복잡한 마음을 붙들고 그 실타래를 푸는 시간이 제가 이야기하는 피정의 시간입니다.

사람마다 반응도 다르고, 다른 반응은 다르게 적용되고, 그렇게 준비한 것이 반응이 좋으면 좋은데 그렇지 않고 무관심할때는 대략난감일때가 있습니다. 그래도 늘 변치않는 것은 교회가 더 성숙하고 성도들이 더 성장할 수 있는 기회를 제공해야겠다는 마음은 바뀌지 않는 것 같습니다.

오늘 읽은 본문은 하나님이 모세에게 약속되었던 온 가나안 땅—산지, 네겝, 고센, 평지, 아라바, 이스라엘 산지와 평지—모두를 정복하게 된 내용이 기록되어 있습니다. 북쪽 왕들의 연합군에게도 승리하면서 가나안땅 정복이 완전히 성취된것입니다. 정복이 완성되고, 하나님의 약속이 성취되었다는 것 그리고 거기에 이제 땅을 분배하는 과제가 준비되었습니다.

본문은 승리와 약속의 성취라는 결과에 열광하지만 여기까지 이스라엘에 오기까지 많은 일들이 있었습니다. 일사천리로 또는 아무문제없이 완성된것이 아니라 이런 저런 우여곡절과 말로 다할 수 없는 사건들을 경험하고 이런 승리와 성취에 대한 기쁨을 나누고 있습니다.

40년의 광야, 불순종의 모습, 모세는 가나안땅도 들어오지 못하고, 정탐꾼들마다 다른 보고, 전쟁에서의 이기적인 욕심등 일일이 열거할 수 없을 정도의 다양한 일들, 경험들이 쌓이고 싸여서 마침내 오늘 읽은 본문의 성취와 기쁨을 고백하고 있습니다.

아마 앞으로도 순탄치 않을 것입니다. 이 과정에 여러가지 모양들이 성경에 등장할텐데, 마찬가지로 우리들이 함께하는 신앙의 여정도 비슷할 것입니다. 교회는 늘 이런 복잡함과 다양한 경험을 통해 세워져가고 결국에 하나님이 이 모든 것을 인도하셨다는 고백을 할 것입니다. 이런 고백과 여정을 위해 이 한주간 힘을 쓸것입니다. 기도해주시고, 단순한 어떤 계획을 세우는 것이 아니라 하나님이 인도하시는 그 길 위에 우리들이 함께 동행하는 기쁨과 감격을 더 많이 경험할 수 있도록 하나님이 이끌어주신다는 확신을 가지고 함께 하면 좋을 것 같습니다.

우리는 이런 일을 매년 이를 위해 준비하고 노력하고 함께한다는 사실을 기억해주세요.

oshua conquered the entire land, just as the Lord had spoken to Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal divisions. And so the land had rest from war, and the people were able to enjoy peace.(Joshua 11:23)

Every year around this time, I enter a period of retreat. It is a time when I prepare the ministry plan for the coming year, think through worship assignments, and discern the structure of our small groups. Usually, I go away for about a week to spend time alone, but this year the season has come quickly, so I plan to stay at the church by myself. Of course, I am often alone there, but this time I intend to stay late into the night.

This time always brings with it deep reflection. Over the past year, many of you have spoken to me—each with different perspectives—and during this retreat I remember those voices as I discern how we should move forward next year. It is also an important time to reflect on what our church needs in order to keep growing. Untangling all of this becomes the work of my retreat.

People respond differently, and different responses require different ways of applying and adjusting ministry. When something we have prepared is received well, it brings joy—but when there is indifference, it can feel discouraging. Yet one thing has never changed for me: the desire to help our church grow in maturity and to provide opportunities for our members to grow in faith.

Today’s passage records how God enabled Joshua to conquer all the land that had been promised to Moses—hill country, the Negev, Goshen, the western foothills, the Jordan valley, and the mountains and lowlands of Israel. With victory even over the northern alliance of kings, the conquest of Canaan was finally complete. The promise was fulfilled, and now the task of distributing the land could begin.

We often celebrate the triumph and fulfillment of God’s promise, but we cannot forget what it took for Israel to reach this moment. The conquest did not unfold smoothly or without trouble. Many events—some difficult even to describe—had shaped this long journey.

Forty years in the wilderness, countless moments of disobedience, Moses himself not entering the land, conflicting reports from the spies, selfish desires arising in battle… the list is long. All of these layers of experience, years upon years, lead to the joy and confession we read in today’s passage.

And the path ahead will not be entirely smooth either. The Scriptures will continue to show us the many shapes that Israel’s journey takes. Likewise, our shared journey of faith as a church will resemble this pattern. The church is built through complexity, challenges, and many experiences, yet in the end we will confess that God is the One who has guided all things.

During this week, I will pour my strength and attention into this work. I ask for your prayers—not simply as I make plans, but that we may walk confidently in the path God is guiding us. My hope is that together we will experience even more joy and awe as we follow God’s leading.
