Joshua 12:1–24, December 3, 2025 (Wed), 여호수아 12 : 1~24, 2025.12.03 (수)

여호수아와 이스라엘 자손이 요단 강 동쪽에 있는 서쪽 레바논 골짜기의 바알갓에서부터 세일로 올라가는 곳인 할락 산까지, 그 땅의 왕을 모두 무찔렀다. 여호수아가 이스라엘의 지파들에게 그 지파의 구분을 따라 그 땅을 나누어 주어서 가지게 하였다.(여호수아 12:7)

어제 예준이이 수술을 잘 마쳤다는 연락을 받았습니다. 갑작스럽게 사고로 다친 아이를 대하는 부모의 마음은 우리들이 헤아릴수 없는 타들어감이 있었을 것입니다. 혜림 자매와 휘빈형제의 마음을 위로하며 오늘 하루 건강하게 퇴원하는 예준이를 위해 기도하며 아침을 시작합니다.

예상치 못한 일에 사람들은 모두 당항합니다. 당황을 대하는 태도는 경험과 연륜에 따라 다르게 드러나지만, 우리들에게 공통적인 것은 그 순간에 하나님께 간절히 기도하는 것은 "꼭 그럴때만!"이 아니라 하나님을 의지하는 순수한 마음입니다. 365일 주님만 생각하는 것이 당연하다고 이야기하는 분들도 있지만, 그것을 신앙의 깊이 척도로 계산하는 분들도 있지만, 간절함은 사실 자신에게 닥친 현실과 반응하게 되어 있습니다.

여호수아와 이스라엘이 물리친 왕이 31명입니다. 31개의 성읍을 정복하고 가나안정착을 완성했다는 것입니다. 쉽지 않은 일이었을 것입니다. 성지순례를 가보면 요단 동편에서 서편으로 올라가는 길은 산으로 오르는 길입니다. 특히 예루살렘은 산꼭데기에 있는 성읍입니다. 오르막으로 치고 올라가는 쪽이 전술적으로 불리할 수 있습니다. 쉽지 않은 상황에서 여호수아는 하나님의 약속만 붙들고 정착을 완료합니다.

동서남북에 있는 성읍들을 정복한 이스라엘이 가나안땅에 무난하게 정착한것처럼 보이지만, 보이지 않는 치열함과 열심으로 가능했을 것입니다. 이런 치열함을 통해서 하나님의 약속이 이루어진것입니다.

신앙생활의 성장도 치열함을 통해 완성해 가는 것입니다. 가만히 앉아서 시간이 지나면 신앙이 완성되어지지 않습니다. 부딪히고 마주하고 넘어서야 신앙도 성숙해집니다.

대림절기를 보내면서 저에게 가장큰 기억은 성탄절 트리를 교회안과 밖에 설치하는 것입니다. 특별한것 없는 이 행이는 저의 부딪히고 마주하고 넘어서는 신앙행위였습니다. 성탄의 기쁨이 가득할때 가장 외롭게 시간을 보낸 어린시절 교회는 이런 저에게 외롭지 않음과 따뜻함 그리고 교제와 나눔이라는 특별한 시간을 허락했습니다. 이 시간이 아마 저를 지금까지 세워온 자양분이었을 것입니다.

우리모두 이와 비슷한 말로다 표현할 수 없는 특벽한 자양분들이 있을 것입니다. 그것을 잘 기억하고 오늘을 살아내고 내일을 준비하는 것이 신앙생활입니다. 하나님은 여전히 함께하십니다.

“Joshua and the Israelites struck down all the kings of the land from Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon on the west of the Jordan to Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir. Joshua gave their land to the tribes of Israel as an inheritance, dividing it according to their allotted portions.”(Joshua 12:7)

Yesterday, I received the news that Yejun’s surgery went well.For parents, facing a sudden accident is a kind of pain and fear that none of us can fully understand.As we comfort Hyerim and Hwibin today, we also begin this morning in prayer for Yejun’s healthy recovery and safe discharge.

Whenever something unexpected happens, people naturally become unsettled.The way we respond may differ depending on age, experience, or personality, but one thing is common among believers:in those moments, our hearts turn earnestly to God.Not because we only pray in times of trouble, but because trusting God is the most honest, natural expression of our faith.

Some insist that we must think about the Lord 365 days a year, and some even measure spiritual maturity by such standards.Yet, earnest prayer often rises from the reality we are facing right now—from the weight of the moment pressing on our hearts.

Joshua and the Israelites defeated 31 kings.They conquered 31 fortified cities and finally completed their settlement in Canaan.It was anything but easy.

Those who have visited the Holy Land know that traveling from the eastern side of the Jordan up to the west is a climb through rugged mountains.Jerusalem itself sits on a high ridge.Militarily, climbing upward toward a fortified city is an enormous disadvantage.And yet, Joshua pressed on—holding onto nothing but God’s promise.

Israel conquered cities in the east, west, north, and south.On the surface, it may look like a smooth and successful settlement,but beneath that success were countless unseen struggles, perseverance, and faithfulness.Through that perseverance, God’s promise was fulfilled.

Faith grows in the same way.It is shaped through struggle, refined through perseverance,and strengthened as we face, collide with, and overcome the realities before us.Faith does not mature by simply sitting still and waiting for time to pass.

During Advent, one of my strongest memories is of putting up the Christmas tree inside and outside the church.It seems like a simple act, but for me, it was a faith-practice of facing, pushing through, and growing.When I was a child, Christmas was a season that often felt lonely.The church became the place that gave me warmth, belonging, fellowship, and joy—a place where loneliness was replaced with grace.Those moments became a deep reservoir of strength that has carried me to this day.

All of us, in our own ways, have such indescribably precious moments—memories that became nourishment for our faith journey.Remembering them, living faithfully today, and preparing for tomorrow—this is our spiritual life.And through it all, God is still with us.
